Some of it is great filler - the exception being I Just Want To See His Face, which is crap.

Greatest filler of them all . .
And that great trio: V. Blues, Just want to see his face and Let it loose.

I miss Havo's legendary "how old are you" threads popping up constantly within a couple of months...

A Bigger Bang is better than Exile? Well, there's subjective and there's just, I don't know what. Glad you liked ABB, so did I, but come on. Exile isn't for people who want songs they can sing, tho it has enough of those. I find it to be the unfettered artistic zenith of Keith Richards' career. Jagger had to fix it up in LA, true enough, but the raggedly glorious expansive spirit of rock'n roll fully realized like none before is undeniable. IMHO.

Exile has it all... simply the best album ever made.

This has been discussed many times, but it seems some folks still don't understand that a great album is more than the sum of its parts. In other its not a matter of counting hit songs. Exile is a statement, a mood, a work of art. If someone doesn't prefer it or enjoy it as much as many of us, that's fine, but it hardly makes it overrated. Some people don't like Picasso, some don't appreciate excellent wine, but that hardly makes those things overrated.

I agree about the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts. I know that's a cliche, but cliches are cliches for a reason. EOMS fits this cliche perfectly, as does The Beatles White Album. Some of the songs on The White Album I will never seek out individually. Put I let them play all the way through in the context of the album. EOMS is similar in that regard. I think Zeppelin's PG probably has more tracks that stand alone than The White Album or EOMS, but it has filler too.

I love 'Just Want To See His Face.' A trio? It's 5 songs - side 3 is where 'Exile' gets real.

I want to know if the rumors are true about it. Was it 3 minutes out of a 20-min jam? Does Bobby Whitlock really play on it?

Someone else - sorry I'm too lazy to hit 'back' on my phone's browser - pointed out that 'Exile' is like Dylan and the Band's 'Basement Tapes.' I think it is, for quite obvious reasons. smiling smiley You can practically smell that sticky, moldy, basement funk on both. It made the music sound so good.

'Exile's' my favorite. I went through 3 vinyl copies, 2 cassette copies including a legit release, and I own 2 CDs of it.

Exile is fantastic! But more so in feel and groove than in actual song content.

And as on Bleed a couple of songs are somewhat ruined by Jimmy Miller on drums. Not as horribly as YCAGWYW of course. Nvertheless. Happy and Shine a Light would have fared far better with Charlie on drums.

Personally, I listen much more to Goat and IORR. Augmented versions, to be suresmiling smiley, but still.

Doo Doo Doo or Fingerprint File alone make those two albums stronger, at least to me.

Now, remember; this is about taste. No more no less.

And to me there are the big six, not the big four;

Sticky Fingers
IORR
Goats Head Soup
Let It Bleed
Beggars Banquet and, of course,
Exile.

I do love most of Exile.

If we´re talking the original vinyl version, sides 1 &2 are stunning.Torn and frayed and Casino Boogie are not great songs really, but work so well here despite that.

On side 3 there´s Happy (great, despite Jimmy) and Just wanna see His face (Not even a song really, but fantastic nevertheless!A favorite!!)

Turd is ok.No more. Let It Loose is seriously underwritten.

Ventilator Blues would have been a classic if played straight! It´s truly ruined by the pretentious beat. Yes Mick Taylor, I´m looking at You.

SIde 4 is even less fun. Prefer earlier versions of Shine a light and All Down The line. Soul Survivor is underwritten, which can be said of almost half the songs on the record.

But it´s still a great record! I just don´t listen to it as much as the other 5 on the list above.

Agree and disagree..

I think the coverage is even longer....

I guess part of the fun of a fan club is hanging out with people who love your band but have different opinion.
Still I find it shocking that people rate iorr, Ghs, b&b higher than say "Rolling Stones now" "out of our heads" "aftermath" and "England's newest hitmakers"

Back again as the one who reactivated this old thread.

I REALLY need to STOP playing Exile on Main St. now. I'm getting REALLY close to believing it's the Stones greatest accomplishment. If nothing else I'm getting close to it becoming my personal favorite. I hate to sound unoriginal but it really is indeed a VIBE album. So much so, that Tumbling Dice almost doesn't fit, and that my just be a reaction to me recognizing it so much from greatest hits packages and radio play. It does fit more nicely when I don't look at it as a single release but it does have a more catchy melody than others. This is of course why Linda Ronstadt covered it. Anyway, Somebody stop me before I sound like one of those Exile people lol

double albums are meant to be played all the way through, until you know them, and are able to choose sides or cuts that you want to hear, and your memory can put them in the right context for you.

Eh, what about single albums then? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

You'll probably find that LIB and SF are better albums. I spent an entire summer listening to EOMS and... came to the conclusion that LIB and SF are better albums. EOMS is awesome, indeed, but it's not... it's certainly their best vibe album. And certainly their deepest delving into genres. But their greatest accomplishment? It certainly is a great accomplishment... way after the fact though.

LIB and SF are their greatest accomplishments, SF possibly more so, as and for the band, with all that had been happening to them. EXILE musically oddly resembles the LP cover - a whackery of taped things together...

Yeah good points. I think SF and LTB as well as BB are probably better in the sense of what we expect from a good album. I was originally underwhelmed by EOMS, probably because I went into it with too high expectations and I was listening to it track for track. Once I just let it play, I started really digging it. Then after a while you can listen to the individual tracks outside of the context of the album, once you know them better. But I wouldn't recommend EOMS as a starting point to any newbie and I'm sure no fan would. Sometimes it's hard, after the fact, to appreciate albums like BB, LIB and SF when they have such recognizable songs on them. We tend to try to base our view of the album on just the songs we haven't heard a bunch over the years. And although those lesser known tracks still help the album, we have to remember that there was a time when the overplayed songs were new and when you consider that, then they are the ones that make the albums classic. Zeppelin has this same problem when someone is trying to appreciate Zep IV. They don't want to listen to Black Dog, Rock and Roll or Stairway, lol, but they have to consider those songs as once being fresh along with the other songs.

Haha, I am one of those people. This is eggzactly what I was talking about ... it seems like nothing special for first several listens, and then when it hits you, it hits you hard!

I think I played it a couple times, and then went at least another year or longer, before I gave it a try again ... I had no message boards at that time for motivation, so I didn't even know it hit other people like this at that time.

As to those that state there is no standout song, I disagree. To me, All Down The Line is one of the top Stones songs ever! I am sure it would be in my top 10, possibly top 5.

I loathed Stairway To Heaven for years... then when I got CELEBRATION DAY it took on a whole new life. Now listening to LED ZEPPELIN 4 I love listening to STH. Black Dog and Rock'N'Roll have always been awesome.
