I like this version of Ventilator Blues a lot better then the Album version. I think Jagger was on fire with the lyrics on EOMS but they get muddled a little on the album. Here you can hear clearly the lyrics, same with the rehearsels for Loving Cup.

i Know, somebody will disagree! Its a great album --for sure. but---where is a song like "Midnight Rambler" Or "Sympathie"?.. Casino boogie--"turd on the run--i just seen his face---soul survivour--are "fillers" --I mentioned "Beggars" and "Bleed"-but what i like most is "Aftermath" and "out of our heads".

An outrageous slur on one of THE finest albums in the world !! I protest !!

Casino Boogie is a "filler ? Soul Survivor is a "filler" ? Absolute horses**t !!

What makes EOMS so great is its lack of a huge song like Brown Sugar! It delves into all styles of American music that they Stones can play. Gospel, Country, Blues and Rock N Roll. The crowning achievement of their recording career IMHO!

thumbs up Exile is a magical 18 song rock opera...it tells a great story...

Right. And don't forget the original vinyl cover . .

I'm the one who reactivated the thread because it popped up on Google search when I was scrolling for Exile blogs. Seeing as how I was actually a member of this one, I decided to comment, and for and old thread it sure has gotten a lot of additional responses. Maybe Exile will grow on me. As I said I can stream it with headphones off Google play or crank it on my computer speakers which is a boom box with an aux chord running from it to the tower. Maybe I'm just a tad disappointed because of all the hype I had read before listening to it. However, that same hype for Beggars, Bleed, Sticky or Some Girls didn't leave me underwhelmed. For what its worth I have actually purchased individual tracks off of Exile. The obvious Tumbling Dice but also Torn and Frayed, Rip this Joint, Ventilator Blues and Let it Loose. Having those purchased has dropped the price down to the point I might as well just buy the rest of it lol. Maybe if I own it I'll appreciate it more.

EOMS is, as a whole, a fantastic album. It's not about hit singles. Once you listen to it enough times it'll make sense. There is filler on it but it's so whack it doesn't matter.

Thanks guys. I plan on playing it some more both as backdrop and with headphones. I wont "Try" to like it because that's not how you ever really like an album. If it slowly grows on me more that's cool. That's how Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti worked for me. I always liked a few tracks but felt as a whole it was a tad overrated. I see differently now. Hopefully Exile does the same for me in time.

It Will - and yes, Physical Graffiti is Zeppelin's best album as well (although as I mentioned, Sticky Fingers is the Stones best album).

Ugh... this debate is pointless... Is SF better than EOMS? Is EOMS overrated? It's all subjective... it just causes the overreactive comments and fighting amongst all of us RS fans... (IMHO)

At any rate, I vote that no threads with the title "[Album X] is overrated" should ever be started again.

Ummm...am not gonna read through all these posts. For moi, Exile is a trip to be experienced in its entirety. Yeah, there's a few lame somgs, but for the most part, it's a surreal trip through the psychedelic realm and life in all of its magnificence and absurdity. If you catch the buzz/groove of the music, the blend of sounds, voices, it'll carry you through most everything. I used to listen to this album every Friday, all day, repeated play, through headphones on a Walkman cassette player, while doing what was called my "paper day" at a Social Servies office in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. I have listened to this album through ups, downs, highs, lows, life in general. It got me through dealing with sh*t I never ever expected life would bring or expected to deal with. In my humble opinion, it is the Stones at the zenith of what they and rock music are all about.

Okay, I'm back and I know this is quick and may seem and I'll be called flaky and flip floppy but I just listened to in again and I finally got it. The first time I played it, my mindset was going track for track and attempting to let each song stand on it's own. This time I played it without looking at the names of the songs. I realized that this is a Soul album. I don't mean the genetic title soul as a genre. I mean Soulful regardless of the individual genres of each song. The album is filled with arrangements and deliveries that make them Soul Country, Soul Blues, Soul Gospel. And I also picked up on some Southern Rock. It was indeed an experience which felt like I was in a bar listening to a band. Very cool. I'm going to go to sleep to in tonight. I happily stand corrected on some of my previous comments.

Good man

And that's great advice for someone who is new to it - don't even pay attention to the tracks. Just put it on and zone out and listen.

I've listened to it 1000 times, still not always certain of the song titles. Exile is an artistic masterpiece, an intimate picture of their reckless world. The sequence is masterful, yet many songs sound like outtakes, each one fighting for its life.Desperation soaked, filthy, blood spattered, toothless, elegance. Keith the great, inventor of classic rock

I think Let It Bleed album is the high point, and best album of the Stones. But my favorite is Beggar's Banquet, and all of the albums up to Some Girls are great (honorable mention to Tattoo You).

There are days where LIB is their best/greatest album. And then SF. But never EOMS. Too long, and with that, too much filler compared to LIB and SF. Some of it is great filler - the exception being I Just Want To See His Face, which is crap.

There are days where EOMS dips below TY and even BB but never below SG.

It's mainly due to its length. It brings forth the beauty - and brilliance - of a proper album length wise. EOMS is more of a mood album. Gotta be in a mood to listen to the whole thing. I've made a couple of edit versions of it that aren't quite so mood bearing.

Perhaps that's the part of it not having a huge single like SF or TY. I dunno. EOMS is a brilliant compilation of different things they did and as an album a fantastic representation of what they liked to do.

It's just that LIB and SF are better.

Is it the greatest double LP ever? That is most likely. I love Zep's PG but it's got some clunkers on it that really clunk - they pulled an EXILE and grabbed whatever was sitting around after recording 8 songs for the LP. THE WALL is fantastic but way too long. Another album that requires a mood to listen to. Then of course there is THE BEATLES. Fantastic. But also loaded with some crap filler.

double albums are meant to be played all the way through, until you know them, and are able to choose sides or cuts that you want to hear, and your memory can put them in the right context for you.

in most things the beatles are better than the stones. but in double albums, exile is head and shoulders above The Beatles White Album, because it is a more consistent, unified whole.

Absolutely TRUE, their BEST album ever---and they can afford to have a few " filler " tracks with the overwhelming number of GEMS!! " Shine A Light" " Let It Loose", " Tumbling Dice", " Ventalator Blues", " Loving Cup", & " Sweet Virginia".
And KAMMPBERG, you nailed it! It is a complete work, with moments of quiet, ebb, flow and then BAM!!!!! Better than a rock opera, it moves together as one cohesive unit even though the tracks are not similar really. If I could only listen to one album forever more, EXILE would be enough for me!

I agree 100% - it's an absolute classic and I don't even consider one of the songs a filler. Any song off that album is better than 95% of what rock bands turn out today.

It's the equivilent of the Basement Tapes, a real connoisseur's record, it has mood and roots and it's free from over production and slick over dubbing. Exile, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Beggar's banquet were the peak years...perfect albums, soaked in history, drugs, sex and generally decadance - perfect Rolling Stones.

Exile is brilliant. The whole it is a lot more than the sum of it's parts (songs). It is dark and danky, like the basement it was recorded in. It takes you to that place. It is so much more than a collection of songs. LIB is a collection of songs some of which are my favorites (Gimme Shelter, Monkey Man........). Exile is much more.

it's a masterpiece and doesnt have a non-great song on it.

only overrated in relation to the other 3 of the best 4 rock and roll albums ever made.

i like beggars and let it bleed a little more just because the standout songs on them, exile doesnt have a sympathy or gimme shelter.

i do understand how the whole of exile is more than the some of its parts though.

but as one reviewer said when looking back on beggars banquet"this is where they laid claim to the throne" it was basically a 1-2 combination followed by a left hook and exile was the overhand right that scored the knockout.

a title held to this day....

I do not necessarily agree with everything that you write here but in my opinion this post is word for word accurate. Like exile, your post is greater than the sum of its parts.

I understand you're reasoning, but I disagree that Exile is 'head and shoulders' above the Beatles White Album. The White Album is not only a great Beatles album but one of the greatest of the 1960s decade. It's superior precisely because it is not consistent, but a diverse collection of songs and styles by each Beatle (even Ringo contributes!).

Anyway,it's silly to compare the two.

EXILE has a feel to it, hard to describe really, even by musicians...but it is IN THERE! It evokes emotions, takes me to a place no other album ever has. Yes, of course I love Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed,& Sticky Fingers but EXILE just moves me to my core. The hoarse quality of Jagger's vocals, the rough edge to the guitars, MT is just plain splendid!! Keith was at his best, heroin addiction and all, and all of the pieces just FIT perfectly like this gigantic rock puzzle. I loved seeing the Exile film and the photos from Nellcote of Bobby Keyes drenched in sweat, sitting on the floor in the basement hallway playing his sax..very sad to look at now but these images are etched into my brain forever. And who can forget the photos of Mick & Keith actually sharing one microphone?!! Yup, the very best of times...and in some ways the very worst of times as far as addictions go. Musically, however, it was the top of the mountain!

The thing I cherish about Exile is that it was always a fan's album. The critics gave it lukewarm reviews, citing the additional personnel and the sometimes murky mix. Mick, as always easily influenced by critics, agreed, even once saying he'd like to remix the album to bring his vocals forward. On the other hand, Every fan that I can remember, loved the album from day one. It took 10 years or so, but the critics finally figured out what the fans knew from day one - Exile is one of the best albums ever made. Even Mick has back pedaled significantly; giving up on any misconceived thoughts of remixing the album (horrors!), although I actually think he still doesn't "get it".
