It is universally regarded by most knowledgeable rock critics as the greatest album of all time....better than anything the Beatles ever put out.

I received my first copy of Exile as vinyl of course, as a gift bought back from the UK to Perth about 2 months after its release. But about 2 weeks before its release in Australia!

I went to my parents friends house (they bought it back for me) and before going home, gave it a spin on their really nice Pye (!) Stereogram.

I had not read any reviews.

This is after living with Sticky Fingers for about a year or so.

As it played I thought.... WHAT IS THIS? This is a great record player...I had thought at the time...yet this sounds so muddy... Dense... Thick.... Awful.

Despondent, I repackaged it, apologised to my parents friends for having made them suffer through THAT, AND WENT HOME.

IT took me another 2 or so weeks to play it again. After then having read a couple of reviews, one sort of complimentary, the other a pasting.

This time round, on my parents Grundig, it still sounded wrong. Yet, I could hear something. I persevered. Much to my parents dismay. Shine A Light. Yep. Let it Loose. Yep. Tumbling Dice. Oh yes. Happy. I was. Ventilator Blues. Yep. Soul Survivor. Oh yes. Hmmmm, not too bad. Casino boogie... Yes, thats ok. Sweet Black Angel, oh that's nice too. Turd on the Run. Gee, that's got a nice feel. All Down the Line... That's GREAT. SWEET Virginia. Sorry about THAT word Mum! Nice little track though, right? Let's try the beginning again. Rocks off...hmmm maybe, but Rip this Joint, Shake your Hips. Woo yeah. I AM shaking them! Loving Cup... Oh that's nice too. Stop Breaking Down...yep, dig that too.

WHAT was it I didn't like about this when I first played it, I asked myself? The songs are uniformly great. The playing so intuitive, the sound? It actually sounds like they are... right there in front of me. That's no bad thing. Yes, it's thick, full, and rich. It's dense. It's Rock and Roll. Jesus song? Grown on me thru the years.

But that song, the Jesus song, was the song on my first few listens that just made me ambivalent towards the whole record. Thank goodness that did not last!

Over rated? You're kidding. Under rated if anything!
I love this post. Yes it was so amazing to listen to great albums at the time they were released. Later generations really missed out, growing up in the 70's, the music was something.

Thanks. I had forgotten about this interview. It always struck me as Mick's honest views of Exile, given before the album was released and before his opinions were influenced by the media.

It is universally regarded by most knowledgeable rock critics as the greatest album of all time....better than anything the Beatles ever put out.

RollingStone has it ranked 7th, behind RUBBER SOUL (5), REVOLVER (3) and SGT PEPPER (1).

NME has REVOLVER at 2 and THE BEATLES at 9 and EOMS at 24.

It seems to be like that all over. EOMS ranked below several Beatles albums yet alone a plethora of others.

Seeing that no other Stones LP comes close I suppose in one way you're right - that EOMS is their highest regarded LP.

Most pop critics don't like the Stones and prefer the Beatles, but the truly knowledgeable critics understand that Exile, as well as BB,LIB and SF are far better than any of the Beatles albums mentioned above.

HA HA! Please make up your mind, Brstonesfan - rock or pop critics? Pick one, please, and show any that say EOMS is better than whatever Beatles album.

And once again a critic ignores the reality of the album: Famously recorded by The Rolling Stones... in southern France over the course of a sweltering summer in 1971...

That reads like a fan wrote it. "the reworked outtakes sound more like decent-ish, back-to-basics Voodoo Lounge-era Stones"?

What garbage.

Lets just agree that it is the best album ever recorded and that the Stones are better than the Beatles.

In the article, Hyden states 'its status as the greatest rock ’n’ roll rock 'n' roll album ever made should forever go unchallenged.'

We can deduce from this that he supports this statement.

Therefore, Hyden claims that the album is the greatest rock 'n' roll album of all time.

I would have thought the term 'rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll album' would, in this context, include all Beatles albums.

No, he does not say that.

He says "Whether Exile On Main Street is the best rock ’n’ roll album of all time is open to debate, but its status as the greatest rock ’n’ roll rock ’n’ roll album ever made should forever go unchallenged"

In order words, he specifically says it is debatable whether it is or isn't the greatest.

Amazing how anyone could misunderstand that.

Yes, apologies for accidentally misquoting Mr Hyden, I've amended my earlier post.

But wouldn't you include the Beatles' output as being 'rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll'?

i think the sentence is idiotic because it makes no sense, he is certainly not a "knowlegeable rock critic" as the link to his article about the beatles children getting together and making a band that is as good as or better than the beatles indicates. it's unclear what he means other than that he thinks exile is really good and rocks hard, which i think we all agree to.

additionally, the claim was that not only Exile but also BB, LIB and SF were considered "by every truly knowlegeable rock critic" to be better than "anything" the beatles had done and that Exile was "universally acknowleged to be the greatest rock album ever"

in other words, the only thing the review does is disprove the original assertion.

what we can agree on is... exile is NOT overrated! i think it's much better than SF and LIB in fact, and only BB competes.

Haven't read through this whole tread, but, oh my, AARP (American Association for Retired Persons) lists this as an essential album for the baby boomer generation. They also note Dylan's "Highway 61" and Zep's 4th album (the one with Going to California) among others. I don't know. With the exception of a few songs, Exile rocks like crazy. Maybe it's the colors, man, when you're in the right frame of mind.
