Having just recently gotten heavy into the Stones, beyond just Hot Rocks and Rewind, I was actually moved to purchase Beggars, Bleed, Sticky and Some Girls, just off of iTunes samples. The samples of Exile didn't to the trick so I gave it a fair shake on Google play. As long as I have my subscription to Google play I'll have Exile on my antroid and computer for streaming, but I won't purchase it off iTunes to always own as a download for my comouter, iPod or for CD burning. That being said, overrated doesn't mean bad.

To me, Exile is unique in the Stones body of work, in that it's actually a piece of "work". I love almost all the Stones albums but they're largely great collection of songs. Exile is more a piece of work. You listen to it from start to finish and it flows - ebbs and flows in an incredible way (like Dark Side of the Moon in a sense). You don't take individual songs out like Turd On The Run etc - it's part of the overall experience and it's amazing. Exile is not overrated. It's unique - no huge hit singles (well except Tumbling Dice - though coming off #1's like Jumpin' Jack, Honky tonk and Brown Sugar - TD was a disappointing single). I think Sticky Fingers is their greatest album, but Exile just about there and certainly top 10 album of all time as is SF. I actually think Goat's Head Soup is similar and criminally overlooked by everyone including The Stones. Can You Hear The Music, Winter, Hide Your Love, Coming Down Again - very Exile like to me and Goats Head also takes you on a great musical journey from start to finish

Hilarious. You guys are responding to a post from six years ago and the OP is probably long gone. Exile may be overrated. People say it's the greatest album ever made - it might be second to Who's Next. But that's about all I can think of.

I don't see the difference if the post is from 6 years ago, or 10 mins ago, not to mention most are responding to the later comments anyhow ... and the responses aren't necessarily directed at the original poster.

Sticky Fingers is better. Tighter and more focused, and the best songs on SF are better than the best songs on Exile.

Agreed. I love Exile, but I happen to think Sticky Fingers is simply the greatest R&R album ever.

My favourite Stones studio album, together with Sticky Fingers and some other songs. Only a personal compilation album would be better.

What makes EOMS so great is its lack of a huge song like Brown Sugar! It delves into all styles of American music that they Stones can play. Gospel, Country, Blues and Rock N Roll. The crowning achievement of their recording career IMHO!

I'm the one who reactivated the thread because it popped up on Google search when I was scrolling for Exile blogs. Seeing as how I was actually a member of this one, I decided to comment, and for and old thread it sure has gotten a lot of additional responses. Maybe Exile will grow on me. As I said I can stream it with headphones off Google play or crank it on my computer speakers which is a boom box with an aux chord running from it to the tower. Maybe I'm just a tad disappointed because of all the hype I had read before listening to it. However, that same hype for Beggars, Bleed, Sticky or Some Girls didn't leave me underwhelmed. For what its worth I have actually purchased individual tracks off of Exile. The obvious Tumbling Dice but also Torn and Frayed, Rip this Joint, Ventilator Blues and Let it Loose. Having those purchased has dropped the price down to the point I might as well just buy the rest of it lol. Maybe if I own it I'll appreciate it more.

thumbs up Exile is a magical 18 song rock opera...it tells a great story...

To me Exile is the most solid piece of music in the history of rock. 18 solid songs. Every song on there is at least good. I will take that as an album over an 11 song album where 3 songs are great, 6 are good, and 3 are ok which is what the other great Stones albums are to me. When I can put on an album to clear the house and listen to 18 at least good songs in a row I am happy.

I notice this again when someone did the song vs song breakdown on the Exile vs Exile thread and I pretty much rated all of the song vs song as ties.

Exile is an honest album. It works, cohesively, from start to finish. It's a straight ahead, non-overproduced, collection of songs that defined exactly where the Rolling Stones were after Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, and Sticky Fingers. No explanations or apologies necessary. Either you like it, or you don't. If you don't, don't play it.

I think Keith said they figured their time at Nellcote was up when summer ended and it started getting cold. What better motive for moving on when you're at the top of your craft and can do whatever you damn well please? Exile is a reflection of what they damn well pleased to do at that time.

For my money Sweet Virginia is one of the best tunes they ever wrote and recorded. And IMHO Shine a Light is one of their most underated songs ever. I get chills when the Stones (The Greatest Chuck Berry Cover Band in the World) do gospel. Although not on Exile, Saint of Me is another great Stones gospel-influenced masterpiece. Wow!

Exile does not have the commercial appeal of Sticky Fingers and it's not as bluesy as Beggar's. It is in a class by itself. Which RS album is best is up to debate. That's what makes a horse race. But Exile is one of their finest efforts, and they couldn't have recorded it at any other time.

I'll have to keep giving it a whirl. As I've said I'm new to being heavy into the Stones beyond Hot Rocks and Rewind. Not wanting to sound unoriginal but I feel so far that Sticky Fingers is the Stones album that is classic all the way through with Beggars and Bleed being tied for second. I haven't done all my research yet and am still learning. So I'll keep ya updated. I do like Exile, I just don't find it as consistent as the others I mentioned. It could be down to subjectivity or it could change with a few more listens.

You may never like it but one thing I have noticed about Exile is a lot of people don't like it right away. I once read through a lot of reviews for it, can't remember where it was, could have been amazon.com buyer reviews or something and almost to a person the reviewers said they really didn't care for it at first but then it turned into their favorite album. I think it could be because people are listening for that super great hit song and they don't find them and are disappointed.

Then when they listen to it without looking for the all time great songs they realize how solid the album is. And that's exactly what happened to me. I didn't like it for the first year I owned it, then all of a sudden it clicked for me. But some never like it.

OK, fine. I'll play. During the period from 1971-73, the Rolling Stones were nothing less than the best rock and roll combo (including Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Nicky Hopkins and Stu) the world has ever seen, and Exile is their record. They were just "locked in", and as you listen to the dense mix, the music just boogies, and every fill, every note, just sounds right. You need a decent quality sound system or headphones, and a vinyl (or "flat transfer" digital) copy, but if you do, you can listen to it for years and discover new things all the time.

The interplay between Taylor on bass and Richards on "Tumbling Dice", and Keith's great vocal on "Happy", and the boogie-ing Taylor slide on "All Down the Line" make those tracks the warhorses, but there is greatness all over the place.

I don't buy the "filler" argument - that loping, snaking bassline played by Keith, and the way Charlie's snare shot lead in to that gritty two-note sax solo by Bobby on "Casino Boogie"; the slap of the upright bass, and the harmonica, piano and guitar interplay during the break of "Turd on the Run", that Leslie'd guitar and the gorgeous background vocals on "Let it Loose" (one of their greatest deep tracks), Taylor's slide on "Stop Breaking Down" (damn!).

Musically, everything clicks. "Rip this Joint" may sound good on the radio, but listen carefully; that's an amazing rhythm track (Charlie, Nicky Hopkins and Bill Plummer on Upright Bass). I leave you with Charlie and Nicky - this is so good it brings tears to my eyes.
