When ny wife first heard Exile, she thought it was a compilation of songs from different albums. For those of us who have listened to it hundreds of times, it's easy to forget that in addition to the different musical genres that are represented, the album includes several songs from earlier recording sessions. The unity or completeness that we associate with Exile probably stems as much from repeated listenings as it does from the songs themselves. If you listen to something often enough, it will eventually sound like a single piece. Still, Exile does have a beautiful flow to it.

The best way to rate music is by often you listed to it. In that respect, Exile is in a league of its own, at least to my ears.

Exile is an amazing album. I play at least one track a day. Maybe I'm obsessed with it but I think it's stunning: the holy grail, the cat's meow, the winning lotto ticket of Stones compositions. It lifts you up but still lets you get down and dirty. I prefer to listen to it in its entirety because that's when it truly shines as a masterpiece. However, I think all the songs can stand on "their own." EXILE: It's what bands should aspire to create.
And that's all I'm going to say about that!smoking smiley

You said it well.

What isn't said enough is that I think this record is the best example of Mick and Keith singing together, and Mick Jagger's finest work as a lyricist.

The good news is that there is hope for you. Play it every day until you hear a little "click" in your head, the heavens open and you start dancing uncontrollably. Then you will know, my son.

Agree - Howled might need some kind of Stones intervention team to help him with this. You can be saved, Howled, one song at a time. smoking smiley

I somewhat felt the same way about Exile until a couple of years ago. I appreciate it more each time I listen to it and think it's quite amazing at this point. I think maybe I wasn't listening to it loud enough...you need to listen to it loud smiling smiley
At the moment, Stop Breaking Down is one of my favorite tunes

I had the same experience, thankfully for me I continued to listen to it a few times back in the early 80s, even after I thought it was shite, and all of a sudden it clicked. It soon became my #1 album of all time, by any group - and remains so to this day! Lay down on the couch (or outside if a nice day), put on my headphones, and crank Exile for 1+ hour -- it is the ultimate high!

Interesting how so many of us have had this 'click'. For most albums you get sick of them after repeat listenings, and this one is the exact opposite.

Nope, Havo is right Exile is overrated. The Stones have made much better albums before and since.

When it was first released in 1972, I remember thinking, "I've been spoiled by being at so many great concerts...I'd rather hear those in my mind than this."
Discussed it with various friends and radio people. Very few seemed to feel that it was "the best thing yet."

Now I look at the song list and think "Gee, so many of these are terrific. Didn't I know that then?"

Keep in mind longtime Stones fans/addicts were completely spoiled by all that had come before.

I'm sure that people who only in the past ten or twenty years have gotten into the Stones feel completely different

You're right. I had to reconnect with my first to recall when this happened...I admit - I didn't get it for a while. I heard Rocks Off this summer on my Cape station and it was love at first listen. But it took me me 20 or so listens to feel the "click." But now that it's happened, I can't stop. Every day or so, I find a new favorite...today it's Stop Breaking Down.smoking smiley

Eggzactly! I can remember it clearly ... got into Stones w/ Some Girls, then started buying 'hit' albums, like Hot Rocks & Made In The Shade ...Emotional Rescue came out, then I started buying all the old albums - loved them all almost immediately except for 1 ... Exile ... I couldn't believe how bad it was compared to the rest. Listened to all the others 'til I had them memorized, then decided to give Exile another chance - thank god I did! It was probably my 5th or 6th listen when it 'clicked' for me.

Mick doesn't like anyone thinking anything is better than what he's doing right now, but even Mick has come around on Exile.

Not only is Exile their greatest album, "Plundered My Soul" is their greatest released outtake.

I don't get how people can say there's "filler" on Exile. It's one of those rare albums that only gets better with age, and possibly one of the only double albums ever that doesn't contain (in my opinion) ANY filler. (Try saying that about The White Album.)

While there aren't really stand-out "anthems", it's probably better as a result and makes for an extremely rewarding experience when listened to in full.

If I had to take one Stones album on a desert island, I would very possibly take Exile over Sticky Fingers.

There isn't any filler on the white album. thumbs up

I would disagree .. but then I've also tried compiling it as a single disc on my ipod and it just doesn't work. Besides, the tracks I consider "filler" are probably someone else's favourites. And at least there's no "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" on thee smiling smiley

i Know, somebody will disagree! Its a great album --for sure. but---where is a song like "Midnight Rambler" Or "Sympathie"?.. Casino boogie--"turd on the run--i just seen his face---soul survivour--are "fillers" --I mentioned "Beggars" and "Bleed"-but what i like most is "Aftermath" and "out of our heads".

If anything it is UNDER-rated
