Best collection of songs released ever. The album is so good that hits become unnecessary smiling smiley

In other news, Shakespeare, Da Vinci, and Bach were found to be overrated.

And then we woke up and gave our heads a shake.

Has it really come to this?

Actually, in all honesty, music is very subjective.

Exile is a subjective, superlative set of songs for many Stones fans.
So what?

There are many great albums that they've done, and Exile will always be one of them for many Stones fans. It doesn't have to be much more complicated than that.

Move on, nothing to see here.

stoneswashed77,

I don't know if you're referring to my post, but I can only say that I think music is a personal, individual thing to experience, and ratings don't do much to help the experience so much as they help publishers sell magazines about the top 500 albums or songs or guitarists, etc. You may be saying the same thing, and I''m sorry if I didn't catch that.

For me, all the academic or written arguments for Exile are moot if the album (the music itself) doesn't grab you deep inside and shake you up (in the best possible way).

Hey, I'd love to tell people why I think it's great, but it's really irrelevant if I say or think something about a piece of music that doesn't connect with your (or someone else's) experience of the album.

In saying this, I'm not saying that Exile is overrated, I'm saying something more: ratings are ultimately meaningless when it comes to individual taste and preferences.

If ratings meant something we'd all be on a Shakira site talking about belly button piercings and citrus juice diets.

Not that there's anything wrong with that . . . well actually there probably is something seriously wrong with a culture that does that, but that's another thread.

There is no other release besides Exile that can be held up to represent the greatest rock music ever recorded.

Exile is my favorite Stones record because it all sounds exactly the same. Even though very little of it was actually recorded in the crappy basement at Nellcote, it all sounds like it was. LIB & SF are all over the place stylistically and, while they're great albums, it's not as consistent a trip as Exile is. Their vibes change from song to song. Exile doesn't do that: From Rocks Off thru Soul Survivor, you're in the same crappy basement with the same crappy sound from beginning to end. It sounds like it was recorded in the same amount of time it takes to listen to it. I like that.

How will Deluxe Exile be any different from the original version? Remastering seems like a scam.

As Jag's has stated that he didn't like how Exile was finished, maybe the Deluxe edition will see him have a second crack at it. If this is the case I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt that he will pursue his complete 1972 vision for the album, and not some 2009/10 revision.

I'm sure Mick's appreciation of Exile is diminished by the circumstances surrounding its creation. I'm just reading Robert Greenfield's excellent book Exile On Main Street - A Season In Hell With The Rolling Stones and it's a miracle it ever got finished. Mick didn't have a very good time, getting married inbetween recording and having to deal with Bianca's reluctance to be part of the whole Nellcote scene, Keith's descent in junkjiedom and the arrival of Gram as Keith's new music (and drug) buddy.

Mick is unfortunately the perfectionist in the band who doesn't like any rough edges and I guess the whole thing sounds to thin for him.

who the @#$%& is mick jagger; oh yeh; the singer in keith's band...yeh he pretty good

This is one of the main reasons why I think LIB is a far better album than Exile. It has variety, light and shade, a range of moods, whereas Exile is more one-dimensional, in tone.

Just want to see his face is Tom Waits favourite Stones song. Thats good enough for me. Let it loose is my favourite Stones song, em, thats good enough for me too!

A perfect album. Now lets watch Jagger F**K it up the way he always wanted too, when the re-release comes out! I won't buy it anyway. Seriously, this is one album that is worth buying an old record player for, and seeking out on vinyl.

Ive never thought of Tom Waits when Listening to JWSHF, but now that you mention it, I definitely hear similarities between his music and this particular song. Very interesting. thanks for sharing this.

no its not. no fillers at all. imo.

it works as a whole piece for me. AND individually song by every groovy song. it is THE premeire rock and roll ALBUM imo. and was intended, song selected, paced etc...as such, imo.

i Know, somebody will disagree! Its a great album --for sure. but---where is a song like "Midnight Rambler" Or "Sympathie"?.. Casino boogie--"turd on the run--i just seen his face---soul survivour--are "fillers" --I mentioned "Beggars" and "Bleed"-but what i like most is "Aftermath" and "out of our heads".

Soul Survivor a filler, you must be kidding!

It's my favorite, so I vote NOT overrated.

I think the issues have been well-framed here. I like the focused, relentlessly purposeful and powerful tone of Exile, whereas others prefer Let it Bleed or Sticky Fingers for the variety. There is no right or wrong, here.

That is, of course, your opinion, as others like to point out here and that I have just done. Do I agree or disagree? Yes on both. I've always found Exile to just be too long with a few songs that are not up to par to make it a perfect 10. That's all. No big deal.

not sure how it happened with others, but there's a reason exile is so special for me. when i first got into the stones (some girls period), exile was the only album i hated. i bought all the previous albums over a 1 year period and loved every single one except exile. i listened to it about 2 times and decided it was crap. after about another year of tiring on the other albums, i finally gave it another listen. all of a sudden it jumped out at me, starting with the horns in rocks off. before i knew it, i couldn't stop listening to exile, and was amazed when i realized that it was my favorite album over all the others. and yes, i even love the tracks that others consider fillers. i just think the entire thing is a fantastic blend of different kinds of music & rhythms -- and mick's voice is, imo, absolutely fantastic. so i suspect, at least in my case, the fact that i didn't like exile at all in the beginning made it extra special to me after. i suppose i got a feeling that i had found something special that i assumed all others missed (it wasn't 'til many years later that i realized i was wrong and others had not missed it at all - i was very suprised to find out there are many stones fans that consider exile to be their masterpiece like i do.

...individually certain songs measure better than others...I'll buy that...but collectively...there are few records better than this one...and Jagger knows it...which is why he plays it down...it's a bigger headline that he publicly declares it less than what it is...a moment in time perfectly captured.....and soon we'll have the outakes.

I've just listened to Exile and I admit, it's an album full of
fillers. Fillers that fills one's body, mind and soul with the
best rock and roll ever made!

Sorry guys I have to go jiving again!

Have a great Easter holiday!
