Comparing now the pics of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, I am rather undecisive. Might as well be Lord Vishnu. Any experts around? Or are they all busy with Keith's chest hair?

This is a bit O.T but what Mick says at the end of that one is funny :

Interesting idea.

Then we would have:

Lord Shiva HINDUISM
Voodoo Character VOODOO CULT
Virgin Mary CATHOLIC
Goat's Head ??????
The Pope CATHOLIC
Dalai Lama BUDDHISM
Elvis Presley ??????

But why do they give two characters to the catholic fraction and what cult do the Goat's Head and Elvis Presley then stand for?

Looks we're not yet through.

Elvis : God of Rock N Roll ????
Mary : Christianism globally, as opposed to catholicism
Goat head : Satanism ?

Elvis Presley the religion of Rock N Roll?
Goats Head.....a weird soup based religion founded by the admirers of a 2nd rate Stones album in the vain hope of it becoming some kind of prophecy on the 2nd coming of Rock N Roll? .......I'll get me coat then.

>> Interesting idea <<

yeah interesting - but are any of the Hindu triad (Brahma/Vishnu/Shiva) really better known than the others?
apparently not, if we can't even figure out if that's supposed to be Vishnu or Shiva. :E
and i agree that Mary and the pope/priest seem more like Catholic symbols than general Christian ones.

Elvis is probably for excess.

THAT is the SFTD video I've been searching for to post for one reason and one reason only.

Wonderful enlightening and cheerful discussion.

Amazing, how during the dry, tourless seasons, there are still so many interesting aspects about our favourite band that keep us busy with.

Always a highlight: The Stones state-of the-art stage design, afresh breathtaking with every new tour.

I believe that voodoo god is supposed to be Baron Samedi.Mick dressed up as him during sympathy for the devil on the VL tour (top hat,and dark glasses).

I think I saw this tour early on. Is it possible that they weren't ready the first few weeks? Or am I just getting old and can't remember them?

That's it - you're old and can't remember them. But then neither can The Stones.

I don't know if this was mentioned--

Isn't that *Charlie Chaplin* on the left, behind the
Shiva/Vishnu figure?

Interesting topic!

that's the one people are identifying as the voodoo figure, possibly Baron Samedi

I see two strings of beads hanging along the screen. I guess one of them is a rosary,
so catholic also, Maybe the other one is the Muslim equivalent (subha?)
If that is the case, one must compliment the designers for the delicate touch not to
make a portrait of some muslim leader but take the abstract image of the chain.
If I am correct (I don't know a lot of those things) it is forbidden in Islam to make pictures
of prophet.

Anyway, I guess the Islam is represented as well.

Edit: Oh, and of course there are the dice too on the right side. Any comments?

Lord Vishnu HINDUISM
Baron Samedi VOODOO CULT
Virgin Mary CATHOLIC/ CHRISTIAN
Bead Chain RELIGIOUS MULTIPURPOSE
Goat's Head DEMONIC MULTIPURPOSE
The Pope CATHOLIC/ CHRISTIAN
Bead Chain RELIGIOUS MULTIPURPOSE
Dalai Lama BUDDHISM
Elvis Presley ??????
The Dice ??????

I am trying to find a summary that can largely be agreed upon. Any comments?

But what would the worship be named that Elvis and the Dice symbolise?

The representation/image of lifless/inanimate human being is tolerated in Islam.
In Judaïsm ,forbidden (the 4th commandmant :You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.)

When I went in Memphis in the erly 90's ,I saw in Graceland photos of Elvis Presley with a "Chaï" necklace .""Chaï " in hebrew comes from the word "Chaïm " = life.

Thank you SwayStones.
Now that you mentioned Judaïsm, are there any references on the stage that refer to that religion?
I wouldn't know what to look for. I don't see any seven armed chandelier (menoure) or
something like that. There are some Jewish posters on this board. Maybe one of them could
point us to something we missed?

Marco ,I don't see any reference to Judaïsm on the stage although it's dificult to say because there are so many stuff on the stage...
If there isn't ,it's may be because you can't represent God in Judaïsm .

for some reason, the dice actually bring las vegas & casino's into my mind which did relate to Elvis ?

OK,

hopefully we'll get the list completed some day,

the DICE (imho) refer to GAMBLING which leads straight to HELL and the DEVIL as already my grandmother ( "Hands off of them!" ) wisely taught me ,

remains still ELVIS. What are our findings about his role in this game?

.So I try to summarise, from left to right:

Lord Shiva
Voodoo Character
Virgin Mary
Goat's Head
The Pope
Dalai Lama
Elvis Presley

Dead flowers ,could the "Virgin Mary " doll be someone else ?

Read this review ,you will understand why I am asking :

It was an eerie feeling indeed as the rain got heavier, blending subtly with the computer controlled smoke machines, lasers, pastel vari-lites and fifty-foot tall inflatable apparitions of Elvis Presley and what appeared to be a giant Aunt Jemima
Of course I didn't know who was "Aount Gemima " so I've googled the name ,and as I couldn't be the trademark for pancakes ,I thought that may be he would refer to Jemima ,Job's first daughter in the old testament hebrew bible.
At that time ,all the women were wearing the same kind of white veil ..

What do you think ?

It could be we are looking a bit too far now. My guess is the designers of the stage
were looking for recognizable "icons" of worship. I don't think they were sending the audience
on a mission to find hidden messages like the daughter of Job and whatever she means.

Some people worship Mary, some the pope, some follow voodoo masters and some worship
Elvis. I guess addiction to gambling might also count as some kind of worship. At least,
that's how I explain those dice.
All these figures represent forces that influence the behaviour of people. Maybe that's the
quintessence of the song: the devil is telling us how he used and uses his power to make us
do things according to his plans (after all it was you and me). It's not necessarily
religion (only) that influences the behaviour of people, it's every force that is powerful
enough to stop us from making our own decisions, stop us from using our own consience.
Maybe these are the forces the stage designers wanted to confront us with.

But as I said, maybe we are looking a bit too far.
