Well, sure, the 4ths make it a 4 chord song, but it's based on 2 chords.
You are right about the studio Version but the 1973 live Versions are simply brilliant (think of Brussels, for instance).
Although I find GHS somehow badly mixed I always thought it was great that the Stones did not even attempt to repeat EXILE ON MAIN STREET but came up with something new - even though not every song was great. Back then they took the risk.
The GHS tracks were essential on the fantastic Tour of Europe 1973 (most probably their greatest tour ever).
The sus chord just before the refrain (b sus)

Formation-wise, you're right. On the kinds of chords we got ringing, I'm not so sure - as we're talking minimal variation here when it comes to those sus-"chords".

I see it as an interpretation of what a 'chord' means to different people. Different musicians will draw the line much earlier to call something a new chord. Personally I see it like GasLight - only two chords: B and E. The rest is Keith's thing, his strength: they are inversions, sus chords. And he is also very good at stacking instruments to form a chord. What is a chord but a triad, with optional added notes. at the end of the verse the Bass dips low and with that other note creates a possible F#. But when I listen to the basic first guitar, it hasn't strayed.
I'm sure we could dissect this performance bar by bar , and find proof for each stance, but it kind of misses the point of it all.
Re 'Dancing Mr D' and comparisons to other songs IMO it has a lot of "Miss You" in it. I never cared for this song too much (never disliked it either), but have now changed my stance on it. Really like it. Because of the placement of the main riff.

Because it's a tiny variation of licks we're talking about, really, not chords.

Dancing With Mr D is, in convenient retrospect, a combination of Day Tripper and 1969's live version of Satisfaction (slowed way down). I've not heard anything since with that practically same progression.

I keep seein' this thread floating at the top of the list, at least until BV plants the individual travel pages for all the new gigs...
I know I commented last fall on the live clip from Zurich 2017 on YT... just a killer version from the field, filmed from right in front of the PA. The Stones could dust this one off and throw it on the live release practically untouched!
Kudos to Reto H. for the great job capturing this one, and so much more from that show, probably the best clips I've heard from No Filter 2017.

There's a timing thing going on that is quite subtle that gives it a bit of a very slow jolt.
