Whereas once he would mix tasteful covers on each album such as Losing You, Reason To Believe, Seems Like A Long Time on Every Picture Tells A Story with self written classics like the title track and Maggie May all we get now are dodgy covers.

He should take some time out and concentrate on his writing craft again....although easier said than done. Unfortunately once an artist gets too comfortable the inspiration for great songs seems to dry up. Kinda reminds me of some group I really love...now what are they called again????

Still, he is alive, he makes decent concerts or even more than that.
I could picture myself drivin' in my car & listenin' to
some of thesesoul gems.
Perhaps he will surprise us all with a creative album next time.. ?

I think the record company crisis forces the artists to go on tour
way way beyond their capacity, especially when 65 or so..
Might be that their songwriting ability do decrease while world touring
after 60 years of age.. Dunno..

sounds like a keeper...loved his rock classics from the 70's....bottom-line is the man can sing....

These two different track listings indicate that no one knows the correct one just yet - or that the Japanese version will be substantially different from the US version, which would be a surprise.

When I first heard about him recording a soul album, I was hoping that he'd be picking some lesser known tunes. But I guess his label head Clive Davis makes him follow the old busker's wisdom that the cheesier the songs are the more money is in the hat in the end.

Now it looks like he's following that formula again like on his last album "Still the Same Rock Classics Of Our Time"

"If you don't know me by now" is boring ever since Simply Red's version was overplayed on the radio.

For an artistic resurgence of Rod, I can only hope that his J Records contract runs out soon and he moves back to Warner Bros, who still churn out archive releases of his material that has refreshing surprises.

Still, the tracklists make it appear like the new album is a step up from "Still the Same".

Hey, Rod, instead of another album of cover (5-6 ? in a row now counting the Songbooks) - how about getting with Woodie and writing some songs?

He probably only tours if he wants to, not from financial need..
these are great songs! will his covers of them be slick, commercial, contrived, or have the real power and minimal polish of the originals?

can't help recalling the version of 'What Becomes Of the Broken-Hearted' by Joan Osborne, in 'Standing In The Shadows' documentary. So good, true to the feeling.

Not too rare with various releases in various countries .. a Stonesfan should know.

i really never understood the criticism of his 70's rock covers album. good tunes done by a crack band fronted by one of the best singers in the biz. what's not to like?

I don't mind cover albums, but he's going on, what, 5 in a row now? Seems lazy.

I still think he's got one of the best voices in the history of rock music. And he may still put on a good show. But these releases don't make me want to rush out and purchase neither a disc or ticket.

yeah, i guess. but his gift is still his voice. so the writing muse isn't working anymore....whose is from his generation? love all his covers albums - great songs sung by a great singer - i don't care if he wrote them or not.

I hear what you're saying, but at least do some kind of effort to seek out some golden nuggets that haven't been covered to death. It's not just the boring fact that he is doing another cover album; he is covering songs that have reached the elevator market.

i like elevator music, too....

i hear what you are saying, but i'm a sucker for standards, too...i love to hear different singers spin well-worn songs their own way...it's a long-standing tradition among song stylists....

I love Rod's work with the Faces and a lot of his solo work. This release will be quiet frankly pitiful.

Sadly Rod has lost that unique voice and can no longer hold a tune. I would imagine that this was following his throat cancer scare a few years back.

His Great American Songbooks were a real sad indictment of what he has become. I can't see the soul album being any different.

Yeah, maybe he should try covering some Faces tunes. Live, with Woody and Mac.

Great idea!

On a related note, the cover album by Wilson Phillips features a great cover of Joni Mitchell's "California". And ....... Chynna Phillips hasn't accused Papa John of anything (except sorry pizzas).

Honestly...when will these cover albums STOP? How many generes are left for him to tackle?? Country...jazz...R&B...Gangster rap..... when will he actually put a CD out with original material?

Him and Barry Manilow are neck-and-neck with these themed albums.

There was an interview in the press last year or the year before last, when Rod Stewart said he wanted to do a country album, but his label J Records declined on the grounds that the concept "didn't test well". In the interview, he continued that he didn't know what that means but now he's decided he'll do a soul album.

Now here we have the soul album.

Apparently, what this indicates is that J Records had done a market research study on the subject of a Rod Stewart country album. Market research means that somebody phones you and asks you a questionnaire.
Now if the label uses this method to tailor an album of Rod to the lowest common denominator audience, it is no surprise that the outcome is elevator music.

For a singer, to record an actual live album in an elevator, with just him, the sound system and his backing tapes present inside the elevator, so that there is still room in it for passengers on their way through a many story building - now that would be a unique and fun concept.

But I guess this concept is more modern art than music. Imagine Yoko Ono stepping into the elevator, making an impromptu freak guest appearance, wailing a solo from the 1st to the 9th floor and then leaving the elevator, just like any other person travelling the floors of that building that day.

Well, I guess I'm getting carried away. I hope it's not white dressed man with a white jacket in hand.

Byeeee!

I agree Rod can sing and very good still. After seeing him in August a very powerful show. But as stated above hes done enough albums of other peoples songs. Its time to write his own. He must have tons of songs from his older lps not even used. C'mon don't get lazy on us.

THAT I'd buy! I mean, really, listen to most of the first studio albums with Woody, there's a lot of acoustic stuff on there that is more country than what country radio plays today. And he did make one attempt at country back then with "What Made Milwaukee Famous Made a Fool Out of Me".

If I recall right, originally that only appeared on the cassette version of "Never A Dull Moment" as a "hidden" track. Might have been a b-side as well.

One of the best voices in rock history. Several Stones connections. A showman second only to Jagger. Hangs out with good looking chicks. Hell, he sounds like me.
