On which songs Jagger's voice is at his best ?
Posted by: SwayStones ()

I know this has been discussed before but I am not trying to argue if whether or not Jagger's voice is lower now than it was before.

On which songs do you think Jagger is at his best ?

If You Can't Rock Me on "Acetates ".

The band's on stage and it's one of those nightsahhhh.....If you can't rock me somebody willaahhh....

This version is so great because of the way he emphasizes the end of each word with his voice rising in hight piches.

Till the Next Time on "Acetates"
His voice sounds like velvet and crystal.

Hey Negrita

Because he uses his voice to play the two characters (the customer and the hooker )

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

That's How Strong My Love Is has always been one of my favourite Jagger vocals, brought home by the incredible performances on the 40 Licks tour. I love his voice on No 2 and Out of Our Heads - it has that mixture of youthful arrogance, southern American swagger, and above everything else, soul appropriated from greats like Otis, Sam Cooke, Don Covay, and Marvin Gaye.

For a more obscure song it's fab on 'Baby Break It Down'.

Mick's voice at his best ? Difficult question, but my personal favorite is
"Cry to Me" !

when he uses his voice as a rhythm instrument - he's got such a wonderful gift for that

I am partial to that mid 70's ballad sound: "Winter" and "Through The Lonely Nights".
I think "Back Street Girl" is fabulous; because he sounds vulnerable without it being affected.
The studio "It's Only R&R" is great. "Fingerprint File" too.

I'm not sure if I love his falsetto or not. "Worried Bout You, "Emotional Rescue", "Fool to Cry" are all great songs. But there is just something about that mid 70's mid range timbre that I love. "You're so Vain"..he rules.
Let it Loose will be mentioned but it is more a stellar performance.

The rhythm thing - on "Hey Negrita" he outdoes himself. All those "shake'm up now"s are funky, funky. There's one time they do it real straight, all together at 2:30 where they go "Do it right now". And then there is a kind of guitar break, a slowish interlude where Ronnie does a few runs, and they bring it down for a minute; but then they kick it back in and Jagger is up there, carrying on like a rooster getting his balls squeezed with a vise-grip. It's right at 2:53 (had to go listen to it right away)

Two approaches

- when Jagger dominates the band, slow tempo song, mastering live ballad like Ruby Tuesday

- my favorite is the opposite - when Jagger is reduced as a sort of backside "instrument", when you hardly him singing, more groaning - see the instrumental part or Midnight Rambler 69, eructing sound that mergning his voice and this harmonica - a sort of beast in the back, very, very exciting - this is the old school, the one favored by blues singers and also by founder Brian Jones, who said singing was nothing more than an instrument

On the closing tracks "Too far Gone " "Brand New Set of Rules."Jagger's voice is warmer than ever, so familiar and distinctive.

Well said!
I also love his singing/voice on latter songs like "Don't tear me up" (from WS).

I like his voice of rage and disdain in some Midnight Rambler on live.

All time best Mick vocal: Out Of Time - a surly, punky, vile, perfect vocal.

I like the falsetto:

Worried About You
Fool To Cry
Even, Emotional Rescue

Also, Ruby Tuesday
Thru The Lonely
Stray Cat Blues
Monkey Man

and the cockney accent of Where The Boys Go

mick can't hold otis', sam's or marvin's jock when it comes to soul....

he did a creditable job on that song in '02, but he still sounds like a little girl by comparison to the soul masters....

“Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)”

The best rocknroll voice in the World. At the moment retired i`m afraid.
There are many accurate examples in this thread.Early moments like Litle Red Rooster ,Out of Time , Under my Thumb , Satisfaction.Beggars-Exile period : Sympathy , Stray Cat Blues,YCAGWYW, Soul Survivour,Gimme Shelter,Rocks Off.
Than mid 70`s funky growling in Negrita , Hot Stuff than raw and explosive , but controlled shouts in Start me up fantastic falsettos from side Two from Tattoo You (back to 70`s).Jaggers vocals on Dirty Work are very interesting despite assessement of album - it reminds me his voice from 73-76 live era mixed with punk rawness. From Steel Wheels he started singing artificially but there are few good exceptions like Anybody Seen My Baby , Flip the switch,Out of Control.Shine a Light soundtrack is total disaster for me.In fact there is bigger problem with Jagger`s voice nowadays than with Keith playing.
