Oh I forgot, that IS a good one. Also, I love his solo on 'Flip The Switch'. Just a short, nasty blast of Berry-style riffs that says what it needs to say and then gets on with it.

Wild Horses
Sympathy for the Devil (live and studio)
Tie You Up
Let Me Go (live)
Honky Tonk Women
Heart of Stone
Most of Keith's solos during the 81/82 and 89/90 tours were wonderful

Talking about "signature" Keith Richards solos - long before it came to be the only way to play the solo (a'la ABB tour), I think the solo in "Bitch" (studio version) is legendary or exemplary. He really made the funky two-note-chuckleberry soloing a trademark, equal to his open G-rhythm work. Mastered both about the same.

I think "Sympathy" solo - in any form - is quite extraordinary as Keith is concerned. It is just a straight blues solo - at the time the song was released there was rumours that Eric Clapton actually did it - it's not true, of course, but gives the idea that Keith surprised people with that one.

As far as 'young' Keith Richards is concerned, I think the solo(s) in "Down The Road Apiece" is the most striking moment. The way he works out - with such a precise and dedication and discipline he would never ever repeat again - is like study material of "how Chuck Berry-clone came Keith Richards". If I remember right that was the song the Stones were working with when Chuck Berry came to see them at Chess studios - think of that: you try to play the solo when the master is next to you [x] ... There is still 'too much Berry' there, but one can hear the ideas of repitition, dramatic pauses, etc. worked out there that would shape the 'signature Keith' in the following years (see my post above). I guess that particular song and solo is one of Keith's favourite ones in the very early days, of which he was confident with and proud of - already in Little Boy Blue & The Blues Boys tape he has a groove going on in that one...

[x] The scenes of HAIL HAIL ROCK'N'ROLL movie might give the idea of how is it with Chuck Berry...

Well, to try and veer back on topic, here are my 5 faves:

Sympathy (studio version and Ya-Yas)
Neighbors
She Was Hot (studio)
Beast of Burden (Live Miami 94)
Tie: Dead Flowers (that was Keith and not Mick T, right?) and Time Is On My Side

Neighbors is a great solo, but I am quite sure its Ronnie who's playing it (studio version at least).

Neighbors is signature Ronnie. Both studio and live.

Around and Around from LYL almost killed me (that first bend is like God addressing Moses from Mount Sinai) when I first heard it. Also IORR and HTW from LYL are very effective.

Sure about live? At work now and can't check it out but isn't Keith playing the solo at Four Flicks (Paris)?

The Licks version is another matter. There, Keith is noodling about w Berry licks. But in the studio and on every single show on the 1981/82 tour, Ronnie is chopping his axe smiling smiley

Hold on to your hat (not one of the best loved Stones tracks but Keith is rocking all over it!)

Other than that - would have to be:

Sympathy (Studio version)
Little Queenie (Hail Hail RnR)
Somethin Else (Winos, Boston '93)

Lots of great solos from Bye Bye Johnnie in 72-73. The one from Welcome to NY is outstanding, as is the one from the Charlotte show.

And Valeswood is correct.

Ye, at least the solo on GS suits the song perfectly. Still, the solo is more like following the rhythm. It's a schoolbook definition on how to play an effective, groovy lead. They should teach this in school grinning smiley
