Everybody's missing the point. You can't take Stairway and insert row row.. That's ludicrous. But you can change "There's a lady who's sure..." to some like There's a meadow of gold and I hear her call to me"... or whatever Let's sat that was the way it was originally recorded. That's how we know Stairway to be. It will always be great becasue of the melody and guitar structure.
What if we took Sweet Neocon and maybe the words to Sympathy. The song will always be weak because musically and structually it doesn't stand up.
Change Shine A light from "Saw you stretched out in room..." to "Saw you move from the dark of the night... or again whatever it will always be Shine A Light as we know it but change the chord structure or key of a riff and it is no longer that song. that's the point I'm making. Do you guys actually go to see bands for lyrics or the music. If you do have fun a your local Karaoke bar. A great part of talk on IORR deals with Keith's and everyone guitars, amps, style, chord changes, solos, scales and on and on. I don't care what anybody sings about. It doesn't matter when you first hear a song. It's all about hooks and melodys. Peace guys!

You're now making the argument that refutes yoru original stament. thanks.

it would greatly improve it. winking smiley

you can't honestly say that lyrics don't matter.
we all agree music, structure & hooks are a big part of a song but
do you think the Beatles would have sold more copies of "Yesterday" if they
had used the original lyrics of "Scrambled Eggs" (or whatever it was)??

re: Where the Boys GO...I like that song. The lyrics are much better than
Brand New Car or Let's Work. As an 18 yr male in 1980, it was great to blast while cruising.

As I said..I don't expect every MJ lyric to be an inspired masterpiece but come on...

Ironically...the first time I heard Brand New Car...I was driving my new car home
from the dealership. I still thought it sucked...lyrically.

!

you are the one missing the point. you are the one that said "lyrics don't matter".
..so substituting ROW ROW ROW YOUR BOAT
to make the point is not "ludicrous". Changing a few innocuous lyrics in STAIRWAY will not greatly (if at all) impact the general song.
In other words...it won't make it better or worse. But when the subject matter is so lame and the lyrics are so mundane
and amateurish...that a 6 yr old could write it...then it negatively impacts the song...even when it is full of sexual innuendos.

BRAND NEW CAR
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I got a brand new car
And I like to drive real hard
I got a brand new car
And I'm feeling good so far

Take her on the highway for a little spin
I want to see the kind of shape she's in
And I got a brand new star
Jack her up baby, go on, open the hood
I want to check if her oil smells good
Mmmm...smells like caviar

Give her some stick
Push her too far
Right to the brink

Hear the motor running
Yeah, she's right in sink
Tell me if she's thirsty
Would she like a drink
And I'm stopping at this bar

Slinky like a panther
You can hear her purr
Touch her on the seat
Go on, feel the fur
And I got a brand new star

Feel the juice
Foot to the floor
Take some abuse

I got a brand new car
And I drive her in the dark
And I got a brand new car
I think I'll stop and park

what?

if the words for BNC were different from day one.... the song might have been
more appealing from day 1. the way it stands....the poor lyrics never gave it a fighting chance.

I don't mind Brand New Car at all. Lyrics-wise, it's not so different from Start Me Up, and that's a warhorse.

Worst recent album songs:

*ABB - Infamy (crap), Sweet NeoCon (lame rhyming lyrics)
*B2B - Always SUffering (crap), Gunface (crap), Juiced (crap), Already Over Me = the other one that sounds just like Always Suffering (crap & boring)
*Voodoo - Jugular (out of tune & forced), Thru & Thru (boring)
*SW - None are too bad, at least Rock & Hard Place was popular
*Dirty Work - Back to Zero (Zzz), don't actually mind Fight & Hold Back!

Rock And A Hard Place is total crap, in the toilet with Streets Of Love. Awful lyrics, awful music. It's amazing that Keith even allowed it to be recorded. But it makes sense - he let Undercover Of The Night get out.

i'll say this about RAAHP - at least they were trying there - failing, sure - but i give them credit for putting in some effort. on SOL? not so much....

I think, sometimes, that songs such as Brand New Car shouldn't be taken so seriously. It's obviously more of a wink and a nod than any great attempt at being a masterpiece. There are a lot of songs that have their hook but are silly. I think part of it falls on the audience. What do you want? Something serious? Go read a book about health then. There needs to be some allowance of the audience to let the songwriter have some fun.

Granted, if it's good fun or just lame fun, OK. But I think when the idea of saying, as BNC is a good example, the lyrics suck - well, he's just singing about pussy. And it's rather funny. It's just a wink and a nod. And that's it.

Opinion only. It's a great slick song. But then again VL as a whole is satisfying. (Sweethearts Together also gets beat up in this forum for no reason).

What I meant was that BNC has been the example of some people taking it too seriously saying the lyric suck. Not outright that the lyrics suck. It could have been any song.

I don´t think those horrible "dance" remixes of the last 15 years have been mentioned yet...

that's true ...but for some reason i've never felt the Stones had much to do with those.
maybe they do. especially mick. seems (since MISS YOU) Mick has always had
a personal goal to get his music played in dance clubs.

Alright:

Club mixes of
Rock And A Hard Place
Anybody Seen My Baby
You Got Me Rocking
Love Is Strong

If I'm not mistaken all the other mixes are actual remixes of the song (Harlem Shuffle, Too Much Blood, Undercover Of The Night, One Hit, Miss You, Saint Of Me, Mixed Emotions - and the one of Rock). The long ones anyway.
