I've never understood the album certifications for sales in the Britain. Why are albums deemed platinum etc for such low sales when there are so many people?

Eh? Is far easier to get a platinum certification in the US than it is in the UK.

UK. Platinum threshold - 600,000 sales. Population - 60 million
US. Platinum threshold - 1 million sales. Population - 300 million.

I always hate it when they say something like "outsold the Beatles".

Maybe they did.

But what was the world population then compared to now?

And more importantly, what was the population that had access to buy the music?

Maybe there's no better way to track sales, and it's fine for comparing competing albums at the same point in history, but comparing something today to something that came out 40 years ago is like comparing apples and oranges.

Same goes for the movie industry, they track that in $$. How many movies come out now that had the "biggest opening day in history". Well 30 years ago you could go to a movie for $2. Of course they're going to make more in ticket sales today when the tickets 4X the cost! Even for a mediocre showing...

Dont think they ever did outsell the Beatles - not my point anyway and I couldnt care less. Just answering skipstone's query about platinum certifications.

For what its worth, the biggest selling album in the world in this decade has been the Beatles "One" compilation (30.2 million)

If there's ever been a group to divide music fans it's Oasis. We haven't had such a heated debate since, ohh...the last one.

So let's get this straight.

You say you like the Beatles, Van, Dylan, U2 & others (good choices), yet would regard a reggae version of "Three Blind Mice" by the Stones as better. Are you really being rational here? Still, it might explain why a Bruce Springsteen concert would be way beyond your comprehension. Too many words for one thing; political issues, another.

Regarding your defence of Skipstone, I am firstly, presuming that you are in agreement with his assertion that John Lennon is "classless". Could you give us a clue as to exactly why?

Secondly, if you agree with Skipstone about Oasis, then why do you play the 3 CDs you have of them?

Thirdly, on the subject of being "bigger than the Stones" are you not aware that Morning Glory is the second biggest selling album EVER in the UK?

...again, take your time.
Well, at least you didn't make it witty. When you start BS about things being "Beyond [my] comprehension" I'll refrain from responding. Enough of that stuff. If you ever want to compare IQ's, I'm ready.

I never saw the post about Lennon being classless but I guess beating the shiite out of wifey #1 several times would qualify.

I have stated many times in this thread that I like Oasis. I'm not to upset by the current news & let's face it: Morning Glory was a decade + in the past.

I'm always amazed at people on these Stones boards who are outraged - OUTRAGED - when someone slags another act. Whether it's the 'boss' or Oasis or Britney Spears, remember this: THE STONES ALWAYS RULE. I'm sure these cats have their lackeys/fans but if you don't put the Stones #1, why the hell are you here? That said, I did like Oasis & I still play the 3 CDs I have. But there is NO way in hell I would ever consider those things to be better than even DW.

Come back to Rocks Off!

Love Honky Tonk Man winking smiley
Not on your life! I miss some people but enough's enough. Thanks for the shout-out though!

4) I didn't see anything skipstone said that was unjustified. Again, this is a Stones board. I saw one asswipe proclaim that the 'boss" does a better show than the Stones. If you really think that's true, leave.

Hey I liked Springsteen show better, so sue me.I still think that I am entitled to post on the board dedicated to one of my favourite bands.
I wasn't talking about you but I am stymied by why you would bother staying here. There are "boss" boards & they're (yawn) wildly interesting!

There is no doubt they are popular in the UK, they could have sold out their last tour 3 or 4 times over, their albums sell consistantly well , so they obviously fill a niche in the market, it can't be just bravado or selling to the converted, they have not arguably made a decent album since Morning Glory in 1994, so why is there 95 ( when I last looked )posts on a Rolling Stones site.
I live in Manchester and they are very popular even though they don't live here anymore, people still like them .
I don't mind theire music, not that I have played any for a while, but I must admit I love listening to them bicker and go on about how good they are, I'm never sure if Noel has his tounge firmly in his cheek.
I'm not surprised Noel has left the band , I think deep down he really cares about his music and Liam lets him down all the time.
Liam thinks he is Rock & Roll royalty but is in the end just a singer in his brothers band, he admittedly had a good rock voice, I say had because the last time I saw them on at some festival or other his voice had most definately deterioted and he was not anyway near as good as he was a few years ago.
Noel will undoubtetly make a decent album again , he has a few good muso friends and has a measure of taste ,so he will re emerge all the better for this ,I hope he keeps his sense of humour

Morning Glory was 1995. And they HAVE put out good stuff since then. Be Here Now was not as bad as people made it out to be...and Don't Believe The Truth from 2005 was a great return to form, imo. Their latest, Dig Out Your Soul, was also pretty good.

And so what if Morning Glory is from the 90's? It's a better album than anything the Stones have released in nearly 30 years. (And NO, I am not saying Oasis are better than the Stones, so don't get your panties in a wad, everyone).

Both Definitely Maybe and What’s The Story (Morning Glory) are better than any post-Tattoo You Stones album, imo.

Exactly. Liking Springsteen and the Stones is entirely possible. They aren't mutually exclusive to each other. The Stones are my favorite band. But Springsteen puts on a FAR better live show these days.

Says who, exactly?

I suppose you'd believe any shiite (your spelling) that's made against a person who is no longer in any position from which to answer back.

Look at the absolute garbage that's been written about Brian over the years. None of it while he were alive, mind.

You need to get out more.

Consider someone who descends into the special Hell that is a 'boss' board & posts how much they love Sophie Tucker, Last of the Red Hot Mamas & how she always put on a better show the the 'boss.' It'd be ludicrous; not because it's not true but because you'll never convert a gaggle of true 'boss' fans. Remember, the Stones don't idolize Broozy the way he idolizes them. He's to the Stones like Bjorn Phau is to Andy Roddick. Yes, they're in the same league but only in a general way.
