I never thought too much of it until the 4 flicks MSG with Keith nailing the vocal.

...I like Thru and Thru but his best most recent song is The Worst.....a great example of what he has become...a balladeer

For those of you that don't like it - have you heard the unedited versions? It's basically NINE minutes long! And of all things, this is the kicker for me - Keith plays a SYNTH!

Great song, but I also like Blinded by Rainbows which has some dreadful lyrics as well.

Years ago I remember seeing a quote from Keith about how you could tell a great song from a poor song if you stripped away all the excess. At it's purest (barest) essence, a good song has to be able to stand up.

It seems to me that Keith has gotten rather locked up in that writing style of late. That was why I found "Infamy" refreshing; it was different from the later era Keith tunes. (And I'm NOT making an argument that "Infamy" is a great song!)

I happen to like "Thru and Thru" and agree that the MSG version worked great.

The worst thing is you can hear Keith's false set of teeth rattling about, which makes him lisp.

Mathijs

You are completely into wigs and false teeth nowadays, aren“t you?

Great song. Saw him play it at the Bercy arena gig, Paris, and was mesmerised by the performance (which has happened to me all too rarely in recent tours). Great Keith song, great Stones song.

Perhaps Logie has, and can post the NME (or Q?) review - which aside from appreciating side 2 of VL (The Worst through to Out of Tears) considers the rest to be a 'dog's dinner'. The review was entitled Tantalising - because of the promise offered by some gems on side 2.

Of Thru & Thru it simply said that the album (vinyl) closes with 'a(nother?) crap Keith song'

The Licks tour MSG show - Charlie totally botched it! It's great to watch on the DVD.

Happy to oblige, FSW.

I have never particulary enjoyed this track, though I was quite taken with the MSG, HBO, rendition - that worked for me.

Cocoa and slippers time, that one. The lights are fading, the pills have stopped working. I can't even get up to fix myself another drink. Ugh. Hate to hera the old fella sound so weak and weary.

HelterSkelter said "GO WILD, SAINT OF ME, OUT OF CONTROL, BACK OF MY HAND all much better"

Everyone has different tast but for me these 3 song dont bring nothing new. They just use the some old stones formula but without any inspiration. I Go Wild is a very poor song in my opinion. Like You Got Me Rocking.

here is the Greeks two dracmas .first off thru and thru was featured on the second season finale of the stones and i was blown away by that,as opposed to how lame streets of love used on days of our lives .second how can i stop ,and like a thief in the night are so hypnotic and mesmerising to me .very much like heroin or junkie music that you can just dig the groove .it just draws you in .to me the beauty of keith's voice is the rugged aspect kinda like ole jerry garcia .its not metropolitan opera pitch perfect but it has a very melodic rough quality about it.

They're implants, not "false set of teeth" or dentures. Implants don't make you lisp. And speaking of lisping - how about Sir Mick?!! He's the champ of the lispers.

And Keith says Mick's got "quite a bit of Shakespeare in him". Not too fond of Ol' Will, are ya?

Love T&T; was my fave on VL. But I wish it was shorter. The vamp at end drags it down.Would it only be the singing parts, with a bit at the end it would be better IMO. I never liked the 'take away' line either. There's another item I used to think I was the only one who thought that..
BTW the line is "I'm YOUR lover baby thru and thru" isn't it? Difference between "a lover" and that.

I love it. A smoky riff, followed by eerie keyboards and a Keith vocal that is part croon, part latter-day Dylan rasp. Then come those tympani-like tom smashes from Charlie. A good chorus, and finally a coda that boasts a killer rhythm section. Some people complain about the dynamics - too slow a build-up, and too short a 'rocking' section at the end. As I recall, did 'You Got The Silver' or even 'Sister Morphine' not feature a similar set of dynamics?

Maybe this song would not sound so good coming from another band, thus making this one something only the Stones could put their stamp on. Moreover, it was a truly unusual track, progressive in the way that Mick could only wish he could have achieved w/a synth-laden stinker like 'Might As Well Get Juiced'. This song sounds more 'cutting edge' (a term I hate but will use here) than anything they've done since the 70's.
