My daughter loves this and i want to impress her with the best version avaialble, (with Lisa of course). Any recommendations welcome. CD,s even more so! I think the one from the theatre in Amsterdam takes some beating same year as Brixton Havin a laugh.
The best version was the b-side of a cd single released in Europe in mid 90's, I believe it also had All down the line and I think the single was Like a Rolling Stone?
I think that is the same one as on Stripped Companion. It is taken from the Paradiso gig in '95. It has some overdubs but it only makes it more awesome!!! Best ever version in IMO (second best - Philly '72).
The best version, of course, is the UK MONO mix right off Let IT Bleed lp. NOTHING comes close to that. If you want a Live version, Altamont, 06 December 1969.
Well here in Europe came a cd-single in 1996 with Wild Horses , Live with Me , Tumbling Dice and as the raisin in the hotdog-end : GS with lots of Lisa on . Anton Corbijn was the photographer of the cover with the boyz lookin really cool ! BUT the version Keef gave us with the Winos back in 1992 is the version I prefer as no. 2 No 1 is IMO still the one on the original album : Let It Bleed !
.......come on over baby you can bleed all over me !
Forget about live versions with Lisa...she annihilates the song with her pyrotechnic/Mariah Carey-esque squealing. A little showboating on her part, and totally uncalled for.
Yes the single was Wild Horses, but I have to agree the original is the best version. Mick cant sing it the way he used to, but the guitars are better on the live versions.
If anyone is willing to send me a copy of "Stripped Companion", it would be much appreciated.
(Personal note: I would add that my favorite version is from Wembley, 9/9/73, but god knows we don't need any further ammo for the rabid Taylor fans. One of my former band-mates was inflicted with Taylor-mania, and he even got to meet the guy at one of his gigs. My buddy went so far as to name his son Michael Taylor. So, I got accustomed to this sort of thing a long time ago. I suppose there are worse things to deal with than vibrato-fetish LOL.)

What a silly question this thread started with. Okay -- a silly premise, then. Agreed: any version of Gimme Shelter from 1969-1973. Pick one...RFK July 4, 1972...Wembley shows 1973...Perth '73? Well, okay even that one, with Charlie's fabulous drumming.
The Rolling Stones need the fire, the tension between Keith and Mick T. Of course they'll never re-light that wick. ...as the moldering flame has slowly gone out during the past 30 years...sad.
There aren't any "good" versions of Gimme Shelter with "Lisa"... "BOrrrr inggg" -- JoAnne Worley.
