1969 US Tour Photo Thread
Posted by: Eleanor Rigby ()
Date: August 13, 2009 08:51

In the last few days I've been looking back at older threads on It's Only Rock 'N Roll & came across two threads regarding the posting of photos from the 1970 European Tour & the 1975 TOTA tours.

It got me thinking, seeing that the 1969 tour gets numerous mentions here, plus this tour seems to be many of the folks who inhabit IOR & R favourite Stones tour (it's mine!) that we should have a similar thread which features 1969 photographs.

And maybe, just maybe some kind soul who has purchased the frightfully expensive Ethan Russell book "Let It Bleed" could find it in their hearts to scan some of these previously unseen 1969 photographs for those of us poorer folk so that we too can gaze upon these unseen photographs.

Thanks in advance.
Eleanor

What is it with 60's rock stars and dirty long fingernails!? Yuk! Clapton, Jagger, Lennon all seemed to have minging dirty fingernails a lot of the time.

It's Miami. See if you can find "Dear Mr. Fantasy", Ethan Russell's hardback book that was published in 1985. Check abebooks.com or ebay.

Don't think personal hygene was important back in the good old days. There are many pics of Keith in the 70's posing with his trousers open (for some strange reason) - he appears to wearing the same pair of underpants in all the pics. Maybe he only had the one pair.....!!!

Rockman posted a lot of those scans in other threads, you just need to find 'em.

Dear Amused, one of the reasons I started this thread was so one could find 1969 photographs all in the one place.

Then one wouldn't have to trawl though endless posts as your comment "you just need to find 'em." suggests.

You may prefer to be all over IOR N Roll like a mad woman's breakfast searching through umpteen posts tracking down certain items, but as for me (& I'm sure other's) one stop shopping is far easier ;-)

And I was thinking more along the lines of some different shots than the "same old, same old" pictures.

When "Let It Bleed" (the book not the album) was released the net was flooded with the same batch of photos used for the various press releases for the book.

What I'd like to see are 1969 photos from old magazines, newspapers of the time or in fact any 1969 photos that are not commonly seen, and of course one's from "Let It Bleed" that non owners haven't seen.

Sometime in 1970 I purchased a yank magazine about the 1969 US tour entitled "The Rolling Stones Discover America " but it disappeared long ago. All I have left are a few photos from it that I glued onto the back of my original "Stones MSG" LP.

When I was thinking of starting this thread I was hoping that someone might still have a copy & post some of the pages on this thread.

So a big thanks to Rank Stranger for doing so. Much appreciated.

In a day or so I will post some colour photos from Detroit 1969 that a friend of a friend sent to me.

Just have to track them down.

Cheers,

Eleanor

Eleanor .... The main problem is the massive size & weight of "Let It Bleed" ....

Most of the shots even on single pages which are approx A3 size
are too big for scanner and secondly a lot of the shots are double page spreads....

There is a photo from Altamont that has been posted on here before (Can't find it) it is black and white and shows Mick and Keith with loads of people all around the stage- thats one of my favourites- you can see the atmosphere in that one

I would like to get that as a poster and hang on the wall- you can't imagine any band today having to play under those conditions- crazy

Man I love the last one from Rank, the one with Keith facing Charlie. What I really love is ANY shot with Bill looking much a "Rolling Stone". Like when he has make-up on, or does not have his pants hiked up too far.
