I purchased Its Only Rock n Roll yesterday. I really cant tell a big difference if any at all. Maybe with " If you cant rock me" It sounded a little more sharp, for lack of a better description. What do you think?

No.

The main reason for the remasters is to keep Stones catlogue in stores as Vrigin is not pressing that stuff anymore. Virgin is not selling their copies to Universal so they have to release them again. GHS ofcourse is interesting because you get the old US vinyl version of sensored Star Star. I have bought the cd´s but they are no a "must".

I assume if I still own some of the CBS versions -- particularly IORR -- that these are pretty significant upgrades over those, right?

I just received the entire amazon.com boxed set but haven't yet opened it. I expect I'll report on quality in a bit. I think any real fan with $$$ should get 1 or 2 of these CD's just to have a new listen.

Well, they're LOUDER - that's for sure - but I don't know that it necessarily makes them better. I do think IORR (the album) is an improvement, it packs more punch - and that's needed since the original record's production was pretty sterile. Goat's Head is a mixed bag - better in some places, but in other areas it's just TOO bass-heavy. My opinion is they're worth it if you've got the money to spare ... otherwise, no.

They would be, but then again so were the Virgin remasters.

So, Gazza, some have claimed that the new remasters are overloud and distorted. Would you say IORR is OK with the new one, or does one need to seek out the Virgin remaster?

Didnt buy them. Happy enough with the Virgin versions and with no extra tracks and with conflicting reports as to whether they're any better, I chose not to bother.

Have listened to some of the songs on Spotify and if there's a significant improvement, my ears (ageing though they are and maybe not as finely tuned as some people) aren't hearing enough to convince me its worth the investment. Had there been bonus material, I'd have been all over it, though, but I dont feel the need to buy the same album four or five times over at full price if I'm not getting anything new.

the good thing about getting old is that the ears are the first to go...soon i won't care if it's hi-fi, low-fi...no-fi is just fine with me (zz top).

It would be a pleasure, but at the moment as far as I'm aware its restricted to a few countries in Europe (I'm presuming you're in the US).

As far as I'm aware, its going to be made available in the US very soon, though.

I know in Salina, KS that there are brand new copies of Some Girls on vinyl that were printed for, I'm guessing, Virgin.

I'm playing Sticky Fingers & it sounds a little better than I remember. I just wish my hearing was as good as it was 20 years ago!

I've listened to the 1st 3 CD's & this is definitely worth buying. The sound is crisper, Mick's singing is much clearer & there's no editing on @#$%&.

Did you buy the box set from Amazon or did you purchase Goats Head Soup individually?

I bought the boxed set. I wouldn't purposely buy a censored version & I had read that the boxed set wasn't censored. It's totally worth the $$$, BTW!

Damn, now i am kicking myself in the ass for not buying the box set. I've already bought 10 of the 13 cds individually so i guess i am stuck with the censored GHS.

I've been playing the Amazon.com boxed set in order & I'm up to Steel Wheels. Maybe I had the 1st few songs turned down too low but the 2nd half of the CD is VASTLY improved over the initial release. Blinded By Love is much crisper & even Rock & A Hard Place sounds improved. I realize that the price of this thing is a bit steep but if you're actually a fan, it's worth every penny.

Nope.
But I have begun buying David Bowies remasters because I didn't have DB CD's at all (just download).

It's not worth replaving the 94s with the remasters but it is well worth replacing the old CBS discs - they sound crap by comparrison.

If they remaster this series and reissue it on VINYL, THEN I'll buy them all again.

Glencar, with which version are you comparing your new CD's ? The old CBS versions or the newer Virgin releases ?

Well I think maybe the original vinyl albums are way better than the CBS cds. I checked out my original Exile record against the CBS version and the cd just was horribly flat and lifeless in comparison.

Well, I don't think Steel wheels came out since 1989 so I'm comparing it to the original DDD version of that. But I have the 1994 Virgin reissues & these are slightly better than those, especially where the ballads are concerned.

Only if your Virgins get to the point of being unplayable.

Ha ha.
