You want lyrics try this:
Sisters of the way-side bide their time in quiet peace,
Await their place within the ring of calm;
Still stand to turn in seconds of release,
Await the call they know may never come.
In times of lightness, no intruder dared upon
To jeopardize the course, upset the run;
And all was joy and hands were raised toward the sun
As love in the halls of plenty overrun.

Still in their bliss unchallenged mighty feast,
Unending dances shadowed on the day.
Within their walls, their daunting formless keep,
Preserved their joy and kept their doubts at bay.
Faceless legions stood in readiness to weep,
Just turn a coin, bring order to the fray;
And everything is soon no sooner thought than deed,
But no one seemed to question in anyway.

How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land
To seek the unsuspecting and the weak;
And powerless the fabled sat, too smug to lift a hand
Toward the foe that threatened from the deep.
Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand
Adrift upon a sea of futile speech?
And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan'
*** But no one there had heaven within their reach.
***Singin"...
Where was your word, where did you go?
Where was your helping, where was your bow? Bow.
Dull is the armour, cold is the day.
Hard was the journey, dark was the way. Way.
I heard the word; I couldn't stay. Oh.
I couldn't stand it another day, another day,
Another day, another day.

Touched by the timely coming,
Roused from the keeper's sleep,
Release the grip, fall down the keep

Held now within the knowing,
Rest now within the peace.
Take of the fruit, but guard the seed.

They had to stay!

Held now within the knowing,
Rest now within the beat.
Take of the fruit, but guard the seed...
*** Take of the fruit, but guard the seed...

Now,some stones lyrics:

Here you stand before me
Waiting to be kissed
You're a beauty, such a cutie
How could I resist?

It's been a month of Sundays
Since we last have spoke
So much water, you've got daughters
I fell out of the boat

Oh no, not you again
@#$%& up my life
It was bad the first time
I can't stand it twice

Oh no, not you again
I can't stand the pace
Once bitten, twice shy
Let me out of the race

The setting's so romantic
Love is in the air
All is perfect but I'm allergic
To your piercing stares

You look so cool and tempting
In your couture dress
You're addictive, as predicted
I'm nervous, I confess

Oh no, not you again
Messing up my life
It was bad the first time, yeah
You had me in a vice

Oh no, not you again
I hear the inner shout
It was bad the first time around
When you turned me inside out

Everybody's talking
Showing off their wit
The moon is yellow but I'm not jello
Staring down your tits

My life flashes forward
Then it flashes back
I'm still dreaming and I'm screaming
"Get me off the rack!"

Oh no, not you again
I can't stand the pain
I was burned the first time, yeah
I can't deal again

Oh no, not you again
Messing up my life, yeah
Once bitten, twice shy
But I can't do it twice

Oh no, not you again
@#$%& up my life
It was bad the first time around
I better take my own advice

Oh no...

That lyric from ONNYA is one of the worst in a long long list that grows with every new album since 1989.
We can make a Top 10 of worst lyrics ever from the ABB album alone.

Thank you.(no pun intended). But yeah that was just off the top of my head. My point,as Bluz pointed out. Is that Zep was far from one dimensional. They could rock as hard as they wanted to and could also play some great acoustic material. So could the Stones. Which comes around to the point again, that both bands were great...and depending on the song, your favorite band at any given time. Big differnece of course is that the Stones are still at it while Zepp isn'nt these days.

Palace Revolution 2000
LZ outsold the Stones massively; the albums were required possessions for teen schoolboys in 70's and 80's. LZ is easier to get. The guitar with more distortion, the solos faster, the drums louder, heavier. I like LZ a good bit, but I have always missed any kind of subtlety or finesse with them. The message is literally pounded into your brain. Many people prefer it that way. But you got the Stones saying "betcha momma never saw you scratch my back", and Zep saying "squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my leg". I don't mind the in-your-face style of Plant and Page, but find there's a lot more to discover with the Stones; they hold up well through years.

Well put, I'd second that. Zep often sounds like some big scheme Hollywood Blockbuster - it's all "there" from the first minute - whereas the Stones take some more time to really get into, catch the double meanings, feel the R&R, much more like your good old European movie.

As a kid I found Zep absolutely irresistable, the power of Bonham's drums, the ripping solos, the strange sounds and tunings. But as you get older, you also catch the hype behind it, and you might prefer a little more subtlety.

Lyrics to their "masterpiece" Custard Pie:

Drop down, baby, let your daddy see.
Drop down, mama, 'way ya, mistreat poor me
Well, my mama allow me, I fool around all night long
Well, I may look like I'm crazy, I should know right from wrong

See me comin', throw your man out the door
Ain't no stranger, been this way before
See me comin', mama, throw your man out the door
I ain't no stranger, I been this way before.

Put on your night shirt and your morning gown
You know by night I'm gonna shake 'em all down
Put on your night shirt Mama, and your morning gown
Well, you know by now, sure gonna shake 'em all down

Your custard pie, yeah, sweet and nice
When you cut it, mama, save me a slice
Your custard pie, I declare, it's sweet and nice
I Like your custard pie
When you cut it, mama... mama, please save me a slice.

I'd sure like a piece of your custard pie
I'd sure like a piece of your custard pie

Gazza I apologise as I completely missed your point.

And Skipstone ma man I'm all chilled now. I find it really strange that people get, well let's face it, offended by trivial things such as another band having been more commercially successful than the Stones (around these parts anyway). Some take it personally as though you mean them harm by stating any such fact. From what I have read over the many years on this site both you and Gazza appear to have an opinion similar to mine in that we love the buggers and once they were the greatest - but nowadays it's the $$$. We are also open to the fact that others have been bigger at times than our boys and quite frankly we don't give a rat's because of its zero importance. I mean have a look up top at poor old FrankM still busting his balloon over what? At least it's funny to read I guess....

And SweetCharmedLife you took the songs right out of my mouth sunshine. Good answers to dear Frank.

And Barn Owl baby with regard to "need I say more?". No not really. Jagger has written great lyrics as has Plant. Hard to dis lyrics in "Thank you", "Battle of Evermore", "Immigrant song", "The rain song", "Stairway" and so on. Nothing wrongt with bump and groove lyrics. Both Plant and Jagger did it many times and very well.

Both singers have their faults. I too could have done without almost all of Plant's "oohs" - in fact if I'm correctly informed Page edited most of that crap out from "How the west was won". But Jagger's singing within himself since (and including) his solo tours of 88 onwards bugs the piss out of me as well. He has lost all wreckless abandon in his singing so songs like "Neighbours" from the Licks tour for eg sound about as exciting as a bass line from Adam Clayton.

I also LOVE Zep. A very, very close second to The Stones for me.
Stones vs Zep is like (cold Italian) pizza vs custard pie.
Both are incredible, neither are perfect. Things that irk me about one band don't apply to the other, and vice versa.
Both have their catalouges remastered to brilliance.

Trying to get non-fans into the Stones or Zep is just as easy if you know the right tracks to hook a particular listener. I as dating a 23 year old chick recently. The Zep song that did it... Trampled Underfoot. Stones... Hey Negrita. Not exactly tunes that get radio play.

Still, hearing Stones fans shred apart Zep breaks me heart... sad smiley

Both bands are amazing in their own way.Somehow I always preferred The Stones but it's hard to deny that Zeppelin as a band had no weak spots other than "borrowing" from other musicians from time to time. Each member of Zeppelin complements other three in perfect unison.I guess that why they had to call it a day once Bonzo passed away. The same might be said about The Stones but they always seemed a little flawed and that is part of their charm and appeal. Both Band are very versatile and innovative and had an amazing impact on generations of bands to come. One could argue that The Stones gave birth to more positive tendencies in rock than Zeppelin did but it might be due to the fact that Zeppelin had a style that was so completely misunderstood by many bands that followed them.

You've got to put it in perspective. The both have awful songs that were HUGE. Angie and Stairway.

They both have great songs that were huge. The both have great obscure album tracks that are great and played a lot on the radio (Living Loving Maid/Under My Thumb).

One band has been played way too much on the Vlassic Rock stations across the US (yeah I know it's Vlasic but with spelled Vlassic it's more like Classic ha ha) and it will never stop. The other has a much smaller group of songs played on the Vlassic Rock stations across the US (I don't know about Europe et al). Zep gets way more play than the Stones.

Why is that?

They're more popular. It's just that stupidly simple.

..."they both dominated the 70"s w/regard to touring and selling huge amounts of records"

I thought Stones with a dead Brian Jones and Zeppelin with their superior second album in the past were yesterday news in the 70"s. Bowie and Neil Young was hot the first half of the 70s, and then it started with Ramones and Television for the second half...and of course Zappa all the way...

Zppelin are bigger than the Stones now as they were then. And that is a fact.

I don't mind how big they were. I only know that Stones are better, sorry.

Could you please explain what you meant by writing "better " ? On live ? Musically ? As song writers ?

To my opinion ,neither are better. They have different styles.Led Zep is a must-have from the golden years .

The Stones have written much better songs, their performance is much more entertaining, they have released much better records (the so acclaimed Led Zeppelin's "Phisycal Graffiti" wouldn't be anything special in Stones' discography), and are much groovier. Moreover, the Stones are able to play effectively a much wider variety of musical genres keeping their own unique trademark sound. I hope this is an exhaustive explanation of why I like the Stones so much better than led Zeppelin.
Excellent post! Zep was good back then but we've all(well, MOST of us) grown up since then.

And Tumblin dice07 - great post.

Thank you. Glad somebody appreciated it.

I could write pages about the comparison between the Stones and Led Zep but in the end it's all just down to personal preference. Most casual classic rock fans and pot smoking teenagers like Zeppelin because they think they're "where it's at", for lack of a better term. But they don't really understand Zep's music or lyrical content. They just think it sounds cool (it does) and they love the mystique. The Stones are a little harder to get. Their subject matter is often more complex and heavier although their music is much simpler than Zep's. This insures that the Stones will never have the following that Led Zep has. Zeppelin will probably always be more popular to the casual listener because of the epic sound, Plant's wail, the fast solo's and the myth. And I think it's the "casual listener" that makes Zep more popular than the Stones. As for the not-so-casual listener, whether they prefer the Stones or Zep really doesn't matter, because they're in the minority. Let's face it, probably 90% of the people who would claim to be a fan of either band would fit into the category of what I would call a casual listener, meaning they own only the band's more popular albums, a greatest hits package maybe, and they listen to commercial classic rock radio where they here Zep and the Stones along side the likes of Rush, Foreigner, and Kansas. The actual hardcore fans, like people who belong to message boards about their favorite bands and take it all much more seriously, are really in the minority and make up a very small percentage of the general public.

Also, the Stones legend has suffered as the band has aged. Despite record breaking tours, the image of the Stones that many people have today is based upon what we on the board refer to as "the modern era". We never saw Led Zep grow old as a band. In a way, their myth has benefited in the same way as Joplin or Morrison or Hendrix. We never saw them grow old so we remember them in their youth. Although we've seen Plant and Page grow old, the entity of Zep ended in 1980.

I like Zep. I love the Stones. The Stones will always be the best in my opinion, but they'll never be more popular than Led Zep. I always feel like, as a real Stones fan, I'm onto something that is just over the heads of the masses, and that makes it special.

I happen only one here on the board who actually really likes Zeppelin? I love both bands.
But STONES are allways best for me.

But as i´m allways been interested in LIVE music, way before i started to collect bootlegs.

In my opinion stones and zeppelin WERE equal, but very very different, and both based their music on blues.Remember, both came from UK,and so did Who,Beatles,Queen
100 others, and they ALL HAD their OWN UNIQUE sound, which,no one today can´t create.

But the "best" one allways stand out.

I have about 350 zeppelin bootlegs,250 neil young bootlegs,400 pink floyd bootlegs,50 aerosmith, aah then a few ac/dc and Jethro Tull as well.
Yeah,100 black sabbath too, they sucked with ozzy,he was horrible live singer.

why, because i love LIVE music, you can do in the studio whatever you want, but its live music what counts are you talented or not.

Its your business do you like 30mins of Dazed&Confused, but i happen to LOVE those.
As much as LOVE to hear Midnight Rambler from 1973 or 1989 tour.

People should just concentrade in different music, and not for the ones which sounds like stones, thats very dumb if you ask me,and very close minded.

I want hear LOT of DIFFERENT bands, but it must be unique,to MY ears. And to be honest, they are.
I also happen to listen often King Crimson or Type O Negative.

Right now i´m spinning Black Sabbath:Cleveland 21.3.1986.
