masterful thrilling; excellent fidelity in my good headphones...horns sound great. drums sounds great. band sounds great. just a blessing. youtube is offering me RTJ next and ima goin' fer it...frm same tour,.

...whoa rtj tore mah headoff; always does...these films are a startling blessing...

noticed in both clips how close they are to one another on the stage...
especially in those shotz form rtj. four front line in the same shot; working it...TOGETHER as a band. just aces...5 aces plus...man....
NO special stage. pretty standard theatrical lighting...and history. four guys standing close together, mick w mike on stand...mostly standing in one place and just as charismatic and fascinating as can be...keith bill and mick t. in almost every other shot and it's just the heaviest artillerly ever...

that's when the moniker came and that's when it stuck no doubt live in the flesh for the world to see and hear; The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World.

My personal preference would be for the better versions in 1975/76, however two (three) other great versions not mentioned so far are:

- The two 1972 Montreux rehearsal takes, and
- The version from 24 June 1972 (I think) originally on the 'Mick Taylor We Miss You' vinyl boot with Jagger singing 'Uptight Outta Sight' lyrics over the end refrain.

In no particular order; Brussells 1973, 1995 from Rarities and the slightly slowed down version from St Louis 1997. It's the ultimate live song IMO.

I loved the version I heard at Wembley September 73. That comes pretty close for me.

I'll have to go with Brussels, though surprisingly (and for different reasons), the Wembley 1990 version actually runs it quite close.

...the Love You Live version is horrible BTW.

yes, the 78 versions have the best groove!

Tumbling Dice has become such a pivotal song in the Stones live set - almost the fulcrum on which the whole set rests. It usual follows the three or four interchangeable songs and comes before Keith's two numbers and the b-stage. A very exciting moment.

imo, the best TD-versions are from the 89/90 tour.

Personally the best version I've heard was Helsinki '95, but due the fact that it was my first Stones concert ever. It was about the second or third song on the list and it absoutely blow my mind away - all the people near me (in front of teh stage) sang the chorus together. Before that I never really cared much about the song but hat performance convinced me of its distinguished power.

But still the song is a kind of odd piece of work - sometimes it feels a throwaway song - like "You Got Me Rocking" of the 70s which the band decided to play agian and again until people were convinced of it belonging to the classic category. But sometimes I think it could be the best song they have ever done. Now, after watching those clips it feels like the latter.

I also think that it is one of those songs they always seem to get the groove going on. Highlights of their Vegas era. But the best version ever? Of course, I need to go to offical route and pick up Brussells '73. Magical, transcendental performance.

Great performances of TD during the 70s, but there is something about the tempo that doesn't feel right, imo...

Personal favorites after the original studio version are the "Love You Live" one, and a close follower (but a whole different deal) that 1995 version available on the "Wild Horses" single.

"I love the single version also (With the Chuck L piano/hand-clap etc. intro. Ron's solo in that one makes my head spin."

I, too, love the Stripped-era version of this tune. I think it's great with the slow intro and then the song just drops in your lap...fin great!

Best version I've ever heard was the 1994 PPV of Tumbling Dice. Everything I've ever seen/heard from the Voodoo tour has been stellar.

The version of the Stripped B-side is pretty hot.

The SAL version is a bit odd.

The worst version ever? Love You Live. It sounds like they were dragging it through a swamp. It's horrible. There's no roll to it, it just lumbers like it has a really badly broken leg.

It's much better than Sympathy Fo' The Devil.

Great topic, this is my favorite song. For me it's Budokkan March 10th 2003. It runs just about 7 minutes of maddness, it's great seing the video where Mick is telling Keith to kill the song but Keith just keeps it going, pure bliss for me. I still listen to it daily in my car.

The reason I could not quite count the LYL version up with the best ones, is because the damn organ is too loud.

Definently something off the VL Tour. The New Jersey version posted by Loudei is indeed great, but this one from Chile 1995 is a humdinger. It's one of my fave versions ever. Check out Keef's rythm during the beginning of Woody's awesome solo. That alone makes me never think about the KR/MT guitar team. Nothing beats that. Ever. PERIOD!!!!!!

I love the single version also (With the Chuck L piano/hand-clap etc. intro. Ron's solo in that one makes my head spin.

Wow, this version really has everything I hate about post '89 Stones. This is Las Vegas in supreme form.

Tumbling Dice should be sloppy and washed up while still grooving -so '75 (New York!) and '78 are top notch, with Hampton '81 brilliant too.

But of course, Brussels is best. There's really no sense arguing here.

I was wondering when you'd show up. That Chile version is stunning. Forget everything else. It kills 'em all.

Montreux: I think TD 1 is an intentional botch to set up TD 2. You know..."this is a real rehearsal." Yeah, sure! You never hear Taylor stumble it up like that. And, yes, TD 2 is a nice version. This is probably as close as we will ever get to watching an Exile session.

Yeah, I always found that LYL version terrible too!
Couldn't understand why they choose that bad, dragging rendition as they had so many other versions!

In my honest and humble opinion, I think Keith and Charlie grew that song up live, and maybe Jimmy Miller had more input on the studio version than one might think, because Charlie doesn't really have it in the early 70s with this tune, it was later on that the man really grooved on it. Also Micks vocals from the 75 to 81 where the best... ... Ronnie input live I think its also a bit underated...he is not Mick Taylor but he is Ronnie Wood. It's just a load of chemistry, a groove that can lift you up to a very special climax.

Re: Best Live Tumblin Dice Recording Out There

Yeah I think Ronnie does good on TD. That groove, and the guitar break is his kind of style.
