....really???.....Dead Flowers has got to be top 10 or 15 in the Stones magnificent portfolio and lets face it....signature. I'd say their version is pretty much the gold standard.

Yeah really, I always found Dead Flowers to be one of the not so good Stones song (to Stones standards ofcourse). The Cowboy Junkies version brought it really to life. There was more in the song then I had realised.
I don't like 'copies as covers', a cover needs to be fundamentally different from the original. E.g. the Stray Cat Blues version on Yaya's is an amazing cover of album original ;-) And so is Sympathy on the same Yaya's album..

the only time in my whole life i preferred a stones cover to the stones original
was back in 1973, with johnny winter's authenticity winning out over the very
slick and heavily overdubbed stones (i've since very much changed my mind)
in the category of covers which don't at all copy the most well known stones
version, this is my favorite, even over Otis
