Some of my favourites...

Johnny Winter- JJF
Aretha Franklin - JJF
Linda Ronstadt -Tumbling Dice
Bryan Ferry- SFTD
The Ramones - Out Of Time
Ike & Tina Turner -HTW
Taj Mahal - HTW
The Pogues- HTW
Johnny Cash- No Expectations
Steve Earle & the Dukes- Dead Flowers
Gilby Clark -Dead Flowers
Patti Smith - Gimme Shelter
Alicia Keys & Keith Urban, Live Earth 2007 - Gimme Shelter
Ike & Tina Turner- Under My Thumb

And...

... i hate Redding's "Satisfaction" (it sounds like a... parody -cover in my ears), despite the fact that i fully appreciate him. Am i the only one here who dislikes the particular cover??

I like the Great Lake Swimmers' version of Before they make me run - a bit of a country/pop version.

IMO the only way to cover a Stones song is to come at it from a completely different angle; to try and convey the spirit of the song, but from another side. Nobody can out-stone the Stones. This is why all covers of Gimme Shelter or JJF are just jams. I like GFR's Gimme Shelter, but it can't hold a candle to the original.

Now when Ryan Adams does "Brown Sugar" or Alvin Youngblood does "Moonlight Mile", or that version of Sympathy on the Symphonic Stones album, those are a new take on a song; so strong they are almost like a new original.

I agree that GFR's Gimme Shelter is not nearly as good as the original.

What is interesting is comparing GFR's live version (live: 1971) to a Rolling Stones live version, the guitar licks seems similarly done.

The Soup Dragons - I'm free (to do what I want any old time), a hit single in 1990. Decent version too imho and played in the style of their time.

This band came from my birth town of Bellshill, near Glasgow smiling smiley

Bob Dylan did a reasonable job on Like A Rolling Stone. And every once in a while I have to listen to Al Yankovic's Hot Rocks Polka... grinning smiley

They do it live; it's fairly well known.

I'm fairly sure I've heard them do it? Only on youtube? I don't know.

Melanie's Tuesday leaves an impression but you wouldn't want her dirge-like rendition on your daily playlist.

Gram's Wild Horses was a huge disappointment - everything on the Burrito's first album is superior. But Leon's version I used to listen to a lot (emphasis on 'used to,'but that's the thing with covers - you inevitably tire of them and return to the original.)

I will check out the Cowboy Junkies' version of Dead Flowers thanks to someone on this thread. I actually used to know Pete Timmins, the drummer - he was a huge Stones fan at the time.

I recommend Little Richard's smokin 'take on Brown Sugar.

First song:

Axl and Izzy guested on a Stones show when they did SOTE once. I don't think they have played this as GNR.

They did play a fragment of Wild Horses in concert, though + covered SFTD on an album.

I've never liked any of those covers. Oddly I do like several Ronstadt covers and that is my favorite Bowie time period, but just don't think they pull off those Stones covers very well.
