A song that could have been great

The song I'm referring to is "Im Going Down". The last song on Metamorphosis and found on various other unnofficial releases. I think it has a great opening Keith riff and if you listen close to the bass playing it's really good too (is that Taylor playing bass or Wyman). It also has a decent horn section in it. Jagger's vocals aren't anything special but when the chorus comes in, it seems like it had potential to be a great song but it just wasn't finished. Anyway, I really dig that song, how do you like it?

I think that the chords are very similar to those used for Gimme Shelter.

fantastic opening riff (with a amazing guitarsound) and great chorus. the endless jamming is a bit annoying and gives the tune this "unfinished" character (just like soul survivor).

I agree with you about the guitar sound. When I play this song loud it seems like Keith's amp is in my house! I listened to this song 5 times tonight, the album version and the one on Hillside blues with the false start. And I actually like the endless outro jam. The bass playing and horn combo is great.

Was the guitar part written by Taylor ?

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

I have no idea but the guitar intro sounds like a classic Keith riff to me.

keefgotsoul, I totally agree with your post. I also hear there a potential Jagger/Richards classic, that was never realized. ("Potted Shrimp" - or how it is written - is another one, not to forget Taylor's "Leather Jacket" - a song that should have gone through serious Jagger/Richards filter to achieve marvellous results. It could be the case also that these songs - or some of them - might have too strong Taylor contribution, so Mick and Keith might not have been interested enough of them to really work them poperly to be realesed in Stones records - just a wild guess).

Great riff, great feel, great fun, but still no song. So it's quite obvious to me why it wasn't released, apart from Metamorphisis.

There are so many promising riffs and backing tracks among the Stones' unreleased tracks (Dancing Girls/Brown Leaves or Golden Caddy spring to mind), but I guess that's just typical for a band "feeling through" their song sketches, shaping the final track: Could be Brown Sugar or a pointless mish-mash, wherever inspiration takes them.

No Keith in this song at all. From Keno:
I'm Going Down

Recorded in mid and late 1969, written by Mick Taylor, he wasn't credited. Released on the album Metamorphosis in 1975.
Vocals: Mick Jagger Guitars: Mick Taylor, Stephen Stills Drums: Charlie Watts Bass: Bill Plummer Bongos: Rocky Dijon Sax: Bobby Keys

I'm Going Down
(Jagger/Richards)

Hey babe, what more can you tell
The good lord ring your front door bell
Though our love go down, don't cry
Though I saw a man, yes I fell in the ground
Here we go down now, here we go down
There's nothing but the powers that be
I know you fine, I know you're right, I know I, 'cos you're going down
Oh you're going down

Oh babe, what's your fairy tale
The good lord's gonna ring your front door bell
Ah...Shake your face, lose your place
Shoot your mother in law, yeah
I think I saw her goin' down to Paraiso Mexico
Here we go down now, yeah, when you're down
There's just nothing but the powers that be
I know, my, I know you're right, I know
You're going down
You're going down
You're going down, huh huh, yes sir
Yes sir you're going down
All right it's war
Fight your love
Shoot your mother in law
You got a center floor
Lay your hips to the left
Keep you problems at your arm's length
Spit on the ground, never look around
Keep on movin'on up, to be pushed around,
Yeah everybody slow down, yeah...

I loved that track when it came out on Metamorphosis!
Classic Stones/ Keef riff with nice sax/percussion overdub.

Nevertheless somehow it doesn't get to the point respectively something is missing . .

A very good outtake but no great finished song; - but I still like to hear it!

But if it was a Taylor song, why didn't he sue? Or did I miss that?

Donnow what my 50c's is worth these days,
but I believe Keno is way out on this.
Keith Richards plays and invented that riff.

I have never heard that Stephen Stills played guitar on this track. The Time Is On Our Side website has it listed as this:

Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Plummer
Electric guitar: Keith Richards
Vocal: Mick Jagger
Congas: Rocky Dijon
Saxophone: Bobby Keys

(original thought deleted)

Someone please explain to me when/where Bill Plummer recorded w/the band. I was under the impression it was for EOMS overdubs in LA -- am I wrong?
