OT: Songs where the live version is more popular than the studio version
Posted by: BluzDude ()

There are certain songs where many consider the live versions better than the studio versions. A couple of Stones songs might be Midnight Rambler and Out of Control.

However, I am asking a totally different question. What live songs (by any artist) were more popular than there studio counterparts? I guess I want to see how many songs people can come up with. When I mean popular, I mean songs that radio stations play more often, or more requested...something measured. This has nothing to do if you like the song or not. I will start the list with the following:

Do You Feel Like We Do (Frampton)
I'm Going Home (10 Years After)
Smoke On the Water (Deep Purple - may be debatable, but I'll go with the live version)
Surrender (Cheap Trick)
I Want You To Want Me (Cheap Trick)

I am not putting on the list Crossroads by Cream because the studio version I found with Clapton, was not with Cream.

The live version of "I Do" by J. Geils got more air play than the studio version (at least where I'm from). Musta Got Lost (not sure how you write that) too.

Let`s Spend The Night Together from Still Life was very popular in 82/83, often played in Discotheques and Clubs. At that time it was much more popular than the studioversion.

Was there ever a studio version of Im Going Home by Ten Years After? Not to my knowledge. The original version was recorded live too and appeared on the Undead album. Then came Woodstock. And after Woodstock, it appeared again on the Recorded Live album.

I can't believe that after 2+ years of lurking around at this site, my first post after becoming a member is "OT"!

How about "Layla" off of Clapton's "Unplugged" album. Classic Rock stations here in the US still seem to play The Dominos version but all the others are playing the Unplugged version.

Also, Did the Beach Boys ever record a studio version of "Barbara Ann"?

You all have a great site here... I've enjoyed reading your discussions for years and finally decided to join due to the new format and having to be a member to switch to a "classic view". Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to some of the "on topic" discussions in the future.

Peace,
DJA

Welcome, mr dja,

I think Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys IS a studio version. I had read that Jan and Dean were in the studio with them and they were all having a bit of fun.

ALso, I agree that Ten Years After's "I'm Going Home" has always been a live recording, on "Undead" and "Woodstock", and one or two other TYA albums.
