OT: Songs with impossible-to-understand lyrics
Posted by: DaveG ()
Date: June 10, 2009 02:32

Yesterday I heard "Eminence Front" by the Who on the radio. For years I had no idea what they were saying. All I could understand was "It's a put on", but was clueless about the rest of the song. It was very frustrating because I liked the overall structure of the song.

Some of Michael Jackson's stuff was like that. Thriller sounded like he was saying "Da da da Dillah . . . . "

It made me wonder about what songs you all might say had such impossible-to-understand lyrics. What about it? ("Louie, Louie" notwithstanding!)

I had that problem with "I Saw Her Standing There" by the Beatles. For the longest time I thought it was 'I put her hand in my ear"

Thing is everyone here knows all of "Exile" by heart; but before the Net and knowledge: I had no idea what Jagger was saying on those 4 sides of vinyl.

Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd (Roger Waters Sounds Like He's Choking On A Giant Hair Ball)

You Got The Silver - The only thing eye understood was "eye" and I thought it was called You Got The Sliver (that would hurt in an eye)

Ha ha! My best friend from high school and I though the same about Thriller.
To this day we still get a laugh about it. That and in Bille Jean, we always thought it was "the chair is not my size."
And other friend of mine thought Eminence Front was "everything's f*****."

When my father was still alive R.I.P. him and his room mate from law school thought that Lennon's 'Nobody Told Me' went, nobody told me my wife's a freak and nobody told me i'd eat black meat.

I don't know if there are any Family Guy fans here, but they did a joke where you could only understand the last three words of a Police Lyric. I have to agree with them. Some of their stuff is hard to understand:
Invisible Sun, King of Pain, etc.

However I will also say that even though I have read the lyrics for Tumbling Dice, I still don't hear them in the song.

i gave up on most lyrics years ago. for me, it's the music. if the lyrics makes sense to me, that's just an added bonus.

Tomk, that is hilarious! I thought Billie Jean was "the child is not my son . . ."

That's my philosophy as well.

BTW, most of Iggy's lyrics are unintelligible.

Eminence Front (Pete)

The sun shines
People forget
The spray flies as the speedboat glides
People forget
Forget they're hiding
The girls smile
People forget
The snow packs as the skier tracks
People forget
Forget they're hiding.

Behind an eminence front
Eminence front - It's a put-on.
It's an eminence front
It's an eminence front - It's a put-on
An eminence front
Eminence front - put-on
Eminence front
It's an eminence front
It's an eminence front - It's a put-on
It's a put-on
It's a put-on
It's a put-on

Come and join the party
Dress to kill
Won't you come and join the party
Dress to kill.

The drinks flow
People forget
That big wheel spins, the hair thins
People forget
Forget they're hiding
The news slows
People forget
The shares crash, hopes are dashed
People forget
Forget they're hiding.

Behind an eminence front
An eminence front - it's a put-on
It is an eminence front
Eminence front - It's a put-on
An eminence front
An eminence front - put-on
Eminence front
It's an eminence front - it's a put-on
It's a put-on
It's a put-on
It's a put-on

Come and join the party
Dress to
Come and join the party
Dress to
Come on join the party
Dress to
Come and join the party
Dress to kill

Dress yourself to kill.

I'm struggling with the new Denuge Fever album, all of their albums in fact. I think its because most of the lyrics are in Cambodian.

Taken form song books, might vary a bit in reality. Don't want to put them on and wake my neighbors.

She said yeah (please, add the boam, bodda boo dam dawns on your own):
Little girl where did you come from
try a little bit to make me shiver
come on baby, let's drive away the rain
baby you drive me crazy, drive my poor heart hazy
just a little bit, a little while with you
come on baby, let's drive away the rain

She said yeah (3 times) yeah yeah yeah
Come on baby I wanna make love to you

Well you drive me crazy, my love is lazy
I'd miss, I wanna kiss
Come on baby, won't you do what I wish
Well I got the feeling in my soul
I'm gonna love you, you know one night or another
come on baby, let me hear you say you love me

(I wish my wife would sing that to me more often...)

Jivin Sister Fanny (add uh,huh, hu-huhhua or something like that on your own):
Jivin Sister Fanny that's the name of the girl I love
She even got me goin outta town down the wrong highway
(nothing stupid about that line, happened to my brother)
She got me walkin round, she got me goin down
Hey said the policeman, get your sister out of town
Oh oh chile, you got me walkin down the wrong highway
Now, Jivin Sister Fanny you got a brain like a dinosaur
She got my money and she broke my electric guitar
She got me walkin round she got me goin down
You got me walkin down the wrong highway

One of the funniest examples of "mishoid" lyrics I know is U2's "Shamu, the mysterious whale", probably better known as "Mysterious Ways". Also, Bruce Springsteen's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" from the "Tracks" box set sounds a lot like "Benny Goodman is hard to find". And back in the 1980s, my older brother used to sing the opening line of Bryan Adams' "Summer Of 69" as "I had my first real sex dream"... grinning smiley

The Sir Douglas Quintet had an album out in the 80s with a sog entitled "Who'll Be The Next In Line". Alvin Crow(with the band at the time) said they were all in San Antone on a street corner when a mexican fan drove by and said "Love your new record especially that song "HUGO THE MEXICAN LION"! Crow said they all fell out laughing and Doug(Sahm) didnt get it-they had to explain it to him!

Hi OhNoNotMeAgain. In regards to Bryan Adam's Summer of 69, I saw an article recently where he talks about the song. He said the title isn't so much about the year as it is the position!! He's currently doing an acoustical solo tour and is back home doing a couple shows in Vancouver shortly.

Speaking of old Irish songs, instead of singing "All God's creatures have a place in the choir" my sister would sing "All God's creatures have a place in the fire".

if you think about it, it's not really the same thing
