The Angels
Aussie band - big in Aus since late 70's. Led the Aussie pub-rock explosion with ACDC and Cold Chisel. Better than ACDC but never made it big overseas. Known as Angel City in the States.

Angel City, what a great band. I saw them in '82 and they rocked really, extra-specially hard. That Night Attack record and several earlier songs got a fair amount of rock radio play in the US and then they just faded away over here.

For whatever reason, they did not make the jump to MTV at that critical time and I think it killed them over here.

I think Love belongs to the list. The first incarnation made some fantastic stuff, yet none of these sets made any serious impact on the charts...

Who did Black Flag influence? ---

Zillions of punk rock bands?

And yet you were able to name none.

jess, when there's zillions it would be unfair to the zillions to name just one...

The Vaselines. Barely sold a record or got much praise in their lifetime , huge influence on a young Kurt Cobain, he covered three of their songs.

The Pastels, likewise neer sold a record, but set the template in scotland for doing it your self and a bug influence on Orange Juice and the Postcard label and also a young Alan McGee who created the creation label.

Now that's influence in indirect proportion to success, not some band who had a fairly decent career but didnt sell out stadiums and had multi platinum sales.

Puxies, Husker Du, Big Star, The Velvets likewise.

Just realised I've seen all of these bands, so maybe I'm biased

Ok, I understand now, you missed the part where I wrote about the influence on bands who made it big, not garage bands. Early Flag was an early 80s band and then Rollins joined (never liked any of those albums). So I'm thinking of any punk bands that came out in the latter part of the 80s to now who could have been influenced by Flag. Since I do not think there have been to many legit punk bands who made it to at least a small level of success (say 1,000 person club level) since that time, I do not think Flag have influenced too many bands (ie, there aren't that many of them to start with, and I can't think of any who seem to have looked toward Flag more than say The Stooges, MC5, Clash or the Pistols. Perhaps some bands did get a level of influence from Flag, but were more influenced by X, in which case I'd give X the tag for influence over Flag. I mean you could say every band another band liked was an influence, but I did not take it to that level. Flag really did seem to be more a legend than a band...I've never met anyone who likes Rollins, but I've met tons who "love Flag".

BTW...I went to the "reunion" 1st 4 years at the Hollywood Palladium maybe 5 years ago. What a mess.

Yep, Gram gets all the credit for Alt country rock (or whatever). Gene Clark made some fantastic music.

In keeping with the original question I would also add Rose Tattoo. Guns N Roses basically took their bluesy swagger (which AndyJ calls pub rock!), mixed it with a bit of Sex Pistols Aggro, and - Hey Presto - Appetite for Destruction
