Just off the top of my head

Big Star
Husker Du
The Burrito Brothers
The Gosdin Brothers
Brinsley Schwarz
The Pastels

and I would certainly echo

The 'Matts
Velvets

But The Ramones made it, surely ?

Do The Buffalo Springfield qualify ? even if you dont count the individual success the had, they did have some success in their lifetime.

He's not a band, but Ry Cooder should have been more successful than he was.

Killing Joke should have been a double platinum underground act.

Pretty much every New Orleans band that people have heard of, Meters, Neville Brothers, etc., never really made it "big."

I thought the Ramones made it 'big".
I guess it all depends on the definition of "big"...

Cheers,
