Hey duke. Go see him. I wish I could be there (Amos's?) but I already had other obligations. I had the pleasure of watching him (and the 400 Unit) perform twice in 24 hrs in Dec 2007. I also got to hang out with him and the band for awhile. The keyboard player Derry used to play with Son Volt. Jason's girlfriend was smoking hot too.

In my opinion Jason was the best singer/songwriter of the Drive By Truckers. Since departing in 2007 he has put out two excellent albums. He rocks pretty hard in concert...and plays a good band leader role, something he wasn't allowed to do with the DBT's. And NickB, Jason was once married to my beloved Shonna, so I guess I owe him my appreciation for leaving her available, right?

they're at the Visulite. good venue, a renovated theater. Isbell's first album is damn good. I think of him as part of the Fame Studios /Muscle Shoals lineage.
Haven't heard the new one, but I guess I will tonight!
I like his choices of tunes to cover...'Sway' is one of them

Love Jason and the 400 Unit. Saw them back in January right before the new album came out.

I must say I tend to like his Drive-By Truckers material a little better but he has written some good songs since he left.

He came to New Orleans between Jazz Fest weekends. I was gonna go see DBT and then Jason. I saw neither. My dog got hit by a car and it just ruined everything for me for a while. It was his first appearance in NO with the band - usually he just goes to Baton Rouge - WHY I can't understand at all.

Jason's new album is - the first half is pretty good but damn Cigarettes And Wine is too long and the last half of the album is so-so. His live album is nice.

Hey Duke, did you have fun last night?

it was a great show, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit rocked the house. I'd say it was one of the best club shows I've ever seen. I love small venues, there probably were,'t more than 200 people there. He played mostly new material. but did a handful of his DBT tunes...Richard Manuel... also did about half the songs from Sirens...they did 'Psycho Killer' the David Byrne song. man it was straight up rock and roll, the band passing a bottle of Jack Daniels around...Isbell plays a mean slide too. Dress Blues was one of the encores.

here's a pic I took, I'll post a few more...

Yeah man but I was only there for the Saturday night. My first DBT show. Loved it. Came home and downloaded the recording a few days later.

......and I knew he would put on a rocking show. I remember him sounding punk rockish on a couple of songs the last time I saw him. I'm going to go put "Richard Manuel" on the stereo right now.

Goddamn Lonely Love is his best DBT song.
Outfit is his second best DBT song.
Dress Blues is probably his best solo song.
Grown is his second best solo song.

Then you've got In A Razor Town, Cigarettes And Wine (although it's probably too long), Hurricanes And Hand Grenades is pretty good - the live album version is excellent. Sunstroke is really good, from the new record.

I agree that "Goddamn Lonely Love" and "Outfit" are his best DBT songs, probably his best songs overall. "Decoration Day" is another great one. I think his sound has gotten a little more pop oriented though as he's gotten older. I haven't heard all of the new record yet and I hope it's a pleasant surprize, but his last DBT contributions ("Easy On Yourself", and "Daylight") showed his writing going in a different, more commercial, direction, and I felt like his first solo album was more of the same, although I did love "Hurricanes and Hand Grenades" and "Down In A Hole". I felt alot of it was too slick and refined when compared to his epic contributions to DBT's Decoration Day and The Dirty South albums.

His debut was pretty straight forward and very DBT-esque in feel in a lot of places, Hand Grenades for one. I was actually surprised at the lack of production on it. There's much less going on in his solo songs than the DBT songs. He obviously stripped it down on purpose. The new record is sort of a between the two album. It's just that a lot of the tunes are too long.
