Its got to be I Wanna Be Your Man. Talk about revolution. This was the first known use of slide on a rock record. And what a slide performance it was with all that electricity and energy in the solo. It was a sneak peak at punk rock and metal in 1963! Brian was quite the visionary musician.

I would go for No Expectations myself. His slide is truly superb. This man really has the blues, you can hear it in the shaky, somewhat unsteady hand, the on- and off timing, the tuning: hauntingly beautiful.

Those are all fine suggestions(especially "I Wanna Be Your Man" which was light years ahead of its time and blew the Beatles version outta the water!) but I think the day he approached Mick and Keith to join a band he was putting together has to be the "finest hour".

I dont' know much about the melotron but I've read that his playing of it on "We Love You" is brilliantly done. Sounds good enough to me.

Yeah, I guess that kinda depends on if you classify Elmore James as r n r, but I think Chuck Berry used a slide on "Mad Lad" mid 1960. I guess thats again if you would classify Chuck as r n r or rythm n blues! It brings to mind a John Lennon interview where he claimed "I feel Fine" was the first feedback on record in rock. He said there may hae been some old blues recordings with it but I think there were quite a few bluesmen using feedback(intentional or not) wasnt there?

Chuck Berry's 1957' "School Days" single featured "Deep Feeling" as its B-side, which is a slide guitar instrumental. And of course, Muddy Waters used a slide on about all of his leads, and many of his late-50's tracks are just as R&R as I Wanna Be Your man.

I guess Neptune means that it was the first "slide solo played by a white boy on a semi-hit record by a British beat group".

Be the solo of "I Wanna Be Your Man" as original or "first this or that" but to my ears it is the most distinctive guitar solo ever played in a Rolling Stones record (with Keith's "Sympathy" solo, of course.). A true work of brilliance.

Another work of simplicity but genious is the riff of "The Last Time". It sets the road for The Stones (and many others) as a guitar riff band and it still sounds eternal and catchy. And be it as simple as it ever is I have NEVER heard anyone repeat the magic impression Brian does in the original (some of it is to do with the production and mixes, too.)

Personally I think that Brian's performance in NME's 1964 Pool Winners concert is perhaps best Brian Jones hour captured on film. One can see and hear and feel how significant he was to the band in its early days.
