The Rolling Stones have had NINE #1 ALBUMS in the United States:

Out Of Our Heads
Sticky Fingers
Exile On Main Street
Goats Head Soup
It's Only Rock and Roll
Black and Blue
Some Girls
Emotional Rescue
Tattoo You

Interesting list. Six of the nine are past what most of us would consider to be their peak period. From 1973-1981, I think they sold an awful lot of albums based mainly on reputation, name recognition, and a great logo.

Paint it black topped the charts in 1990 in The netherlands because of the great succes of the series Tour of duty

Of those album charts... Funny little fact: it looks like that of ALL their proper studio albums (I don't count the local oddities such 12x5, Now! DECEMBER'S CHILDREN and FLOWERS as those) only BEGGARS BANQUET couldn't top the charts in any country. eye popping smiley What a loser album...grinning smiley

my answer to squando as on page 1:

Bravo is a German only release from December 1965 - one of four new lps in that year in Germany! In Januar 1966 a Big Hits followed, but not the one we know. It was done in cooperation with a German tv magazine called Hör zu (translated: Listen to me - the tv magazine started as a radio magazine...). I don't know more about the history of that, but people like Nico Zentgraf or Dieter Hoffmann sure do.
It contains the following songs: Satisfaction, She Said Yeah, Time Is On My Side (organ intro; the guitar intro version was released on No.2... in january that year), I'm Alright (live), I'm Free, Gotta Get Away, Stoned, Get Off Of My Cloud, Talkin' 'Bout You, Come On, The Last Time, The Underassistant..., I Want To Be Loved, The Singer Not the Song.
Lots of hits and rarities that most countries would only be able to hear in the 70s (More Hot Rocks, No Stone Unturned)! Dieter Hoffmann (Basement News, Schwarzbuch/Black Book, Weissbuch/White Book) prized it (in the 90s) as up to 40 Euro.

JJHMick, thanks for your kind reply, and sorry for not noticing your informative post earlier. I made a fool of myself, actually...

Yeah, I remember seeing a picture of the cover of BRAVO somewhere. An interesting selection of songs.

Found another one Doxa. Was listening to the radio playing the number ones @ 1 (pm) in Australia and they played "She's a rainbow".

I'll get to updating the list to read as current a little later but it seems there are quite a few still out there we don't know about....

Oh thanks! That makes sense. I really find it strange that it wasn't relaesed or a hit then as it was all over the world. So it topped the Dutch Charts twice. That's great. Still, the success of its "second coming" in Holland is wondering me. Something just "clicked" there I guess (the hype for URBAN JUNGLE tour?)

- Doxa

No, at that time the Tour of Duty tv show was on in the Netherlands, with the Paint it, Black intro. Saw a bloke at the Urban Jungle tour in Rotterdam wearing a Tour of Duty shirt, he got a nice long 'loser' from the crowd...

So Paint it, Black made it twice to no. 1 in the Netherlands with the same version by the same artits. Unique, never done before or after!

"In any case, it looks like Canada is a true Rolling Stones land!

Yes very true. Canada also sent the moptops to the top of the charts 26 times as well I think.

Poor old "19th nervous breakdown". Kept off the top in Canada as well by that silly bloody Nancy Sinatra song.....

Very interesting thread. I believe that 'Little Queenie' from GYYYO was released as a single in Australia and went to No. 1; in fact it was the Stones last No. 1 in Australia (although 'Start Me Up' may have also reached the top of the charts here)!

Re: Rolling Stones number one hits list

Hi hassle1

"Start me up" was indeed a #1 in Oz. "Angie" in '73 topped the charts for four weeks in Oz also. They are the last two post HTW in '69 that I am currently aware of.

Interesting that LQ may have topped the charts here as well. Have to do some digging around and see what I can find.

ps - correction......"Angie" topped the charts for five weeks.

"Found another one Doxa. Was listening to the radio playing the number ones @ 1 (pm) in Australia and they played "She's a rainbow".
"

And another yet - "You can't always get what you want". It was flipped by DJs in Aust apparently and also hit #1 in most major cities as the A side HTW already had.

Also "Still life" entered the number one spot in Sweden on June 30 1982,

No ma man I'm sorry I don't. I spotted this on Wikipedia in the singles section for the Stones. It appears to be recently added. They have some other chatings of the Stones thru the 60s if you wanna have a squizz:

[en.wikipedia.org]

Must get around to compiling a current list of what we have found thus far...

Now with Exile having #1 in the UK it's another unique effort. Will have to compile a Rolling Stones "One" ala the Beatles now, although I'll be drawing from a worldworld source as oppossed to the Beatles who drew only from US and UK.

Exile being #1 in Scotland might be a newbie as well. I didn't even know Scottish charts existed.

And "Exile on Main St." went to no.1 in Norway,38 years since last time the album went to no.1 in Norway.
38 years is the longest spell for any album in Norway doing this.

Hi Ruby Friday. Do you have access to any album or singles chart in your homeland that would be able to dig out the Stones chart history there?
38 year gap. That is bloody impressive when you really sit down and give it a few moments thought smoking smiley

They could easily make "Rolling Stones 1", based on British & United States chart toppers.

Here it is:

It's All Over Now
Little Red Rooster
The Last Time
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Get Off Of My Cloud
Paint It, Black
Ruby Tuesday
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Women'
Brown Sugar
Angie
Miss You

It's not QUITE like 27 No. 1 singles, like The Fabs though...

Wasn't their some TV show, "Tour of Duty", that featured the song at that time, and prompted the release?

I read that somewhere a few years ago...I know I've seen it as a single (a 45), from 1990.

Anyways there you have it. Hopefully in time we'll have more information at our disposal and can paint a more accurate picture.
Will post #1 albums next for those of you that are interested. No number 1 "Tumbling dice" insight....

And here's the albums list.....and incredibly I could not find a country where Beggars Banquet hit top spot. A magnificent body of work such as that should get the next plug post Exile. Pity it won't due to good ole f'n A Klein. And I know I shouldn't have included Exile twice but I thought what the hell.

1 The Rolling Stones (Australia)
2 The Rolling Stones 2 (UK)
3 Around and around (Italy)
4 Out of our heads (UK)
5 Bravo (Germany) 1966
6 Aftermath (UK)
7 Between the buttons (Austria)
8 Their Satanic Majesties Request (Australia)
9 Let it bleed (UK)
10 Get yer ya-yas out (UK)

20 Still life (Sweden)
21 Undercover (Sweden)
22 Dirty work (Switzerland)
23 Steel wheels (Austria)
24 Voodoo lounge (Australia)
25 Stripped (Norway)
26 Bridges to Babylon (Sweden)
27 Forty Licks (Ireland)
28 Jump Back (Argentina)

OK, and now to make this interesting, and give you a little homework, come up with the complete discography, with EVERY ALBUM having a #1 charting in a country, doesn't matter where, only...get this...DON'T REPEAT THE COUNTRY!!

ie, no Argentina for Jump Back AND Live Licks. No repeating the country.

If we can achieve this, I think we can arrive at peace in the world.

Are you up for the challenge SQUANDO?

Well, then you've actually answered my request, by saying the RS Catalogue does NOT have a number 1 album somewhere in the world, for every official album.
