Hi everyone

Please add to this if you know of any number one hit singles by the Stones in any country. Below is a list of number ones I am aware of. Am only mentioning one country per number one:

3. Little red rooster (UK)
4. The last time (UK)
5. As tears go by (Canada)
6. Satisfaction (UK)
7. Get off of my cloud (UK)
8. Under the boardwalk (Australia)
9. 19th nervous breakdown (Italy)
10.Paint it black (UK)
11.Let's spend the night together (Germany)
12.Ruby Tuesday (US)
13.Jumping Jack Flash (UK)
14.Honky tonk women (UK)

This is a good thread!

I googled [tsort.info]

Even though there are some confusing and doubtful chartings over there, from that base one could add the following ones as chart toppers:

(1) "Heart of Stone" (Canada)
(2) "Long, Long While" (Australia)
(3) "We Love You" (Canada & Holland)
(4) "Dandelion" (Canada & Holland)
(5) "She's A Rainbow" (Canada)
(6) "Hot Stuff" (France)
(7) "Waiting On a Friend" (Canada)
(8) "Going To A Go-Go" (Canada)
(9) "Undercover of he Night" (Canada)
(10) "Harlem Shuffle" (New Zealand)

Some of these are quite confusing - could it be the case that they have technically included the b-sides another #1 hits, f.e. (2) and (4)?

In any case, it looks like Canada is a true Rolling Stones land!

(in the 90's Japan, too: for example, "Highwire" and "Love Is Strong", and "Don't Stop" were all #2!)

It would be intersting to get to know the single chart toppings from Argentina. I think there might be found few other #1s.

Nice thread!

I heard that Streets of Love made it to No 1 in Italy as it was used by Telecom Italia for mobile phone advertising. Is this right any Italian posters?

its is absolutely right that the song got huge success thanks to that ad. i dunno if it topped the chart, but so many young people actually knew the Stones with that number.

Thanks for reminding me of that site Doxa - I found it once then lost it.

As for some of the number ones it shows I think they are B sides as it shows YCAGWYW (in Australia) as number one when it was in fact the B side to HTW - which topped the Australian charts. LLW would have been the B side to PIB which also topped the Aussie charts. I think also the same for "Dandelion" to WLY in Canada and the Netherlands.

The updated list now reads:

1. Not fade away (France)
2. It's all over now (UK)
3. Little red rooster (UK)
4. Walking the dog (Australia)
5. The last time (UK)
6. As tears go by (Canada)
7. Satisfaction (UK)
8. Get off of my cloud (UK)
9. Under the boardwalk (Australia)
10. 19th nervous breakdown (Italy)
11. Paint it black (UK)
12. Let's spend the night together (Germany)
13. Ruby Tuesday (US)
14. We love you (Holland)
15. She's a rainbow (Canada)
16. Jumping Jack Flash (UK)
17. Honky tonk women (UK)
18. Brown sugar (US)
19. Angie (US)
20. Hot Stuff (France)
21. Miss you (US)
22. Emotional rescue (Canada)
23. Start me up (Australia)
24. Waiting on a friend (Canada)
25. Going To A Go-Go (Canada)
26. Undercover of the night (Canada)
27. Harlem shuffle (New Zealand)
28. Mixed emotions (Canada)
29. Anybody seen my baby (Canada)
30. Streets of love (Spain)

If you know of any others please add to the list.

As for albums I have the below list and have noted different countries to be a little more interesting. If you know of others please add to this list as well.

1. The Rolling Stones (Australia)
2. The Rolling Stones 2 (UK)
3. Out of our heads (UK)
4. Aftermath (UK)
5. Their Satanic Majesties Request (Australia)

Hi JJHMick

What is "Bravo"?

Anyone else have info specific to their country?

Re: Rolling Stones number one hits list

Bravo is a German only release from December 1965 - one of four new lps in that year in Germany! In Januar 1966 a Big Hits followed, but not the one we know. It was done in cooperation with a German tv magazine called Hör zu (translated: Listen to me - the tv magazine started as a radio magazine...). I don't know more about the history of that, but people like Nico Zentgraf or Dieter Hoffmann sure do.
It contains the following songs: Satisfaction, She Said Yeah, Time Is On My Side (organ intro; the guitar intro version was released on No.2...), I'm Alright (live), I'm Feee, Gotta Get Away, Stoned, Get Off Of My Cloud, Taökion' 'Bout You, Come On, The Last Time, The Underassistant..., I Want To Be Loved, The Singer Not the Song.
Lots of hits and rarities that most countries would only be able to hear in the 70s (More Hot Rocks, No Stone Unturned)! Dieter Hoffmann (Basement News, Schwarzbuch/Black Book, Weissbuch/White Book) prized it (in the 90s) as up to 40 Euro.

By looking the statistics (which is fun, by the way) I need to say that the popularity of The Stones since Keith's "difficulties" in Canada were incredible there. Just look at the single chart positions in the following years:

“Miss You” #1 (1978)
“Beast of Burden” #4 (1978)
“Emotional Rescue” #1 (1980) SIX WEEKS NO 1!
”She’s So Cold” #4 (1980)
“If I Was A Dancer” #17 (1981)
“Start Me Up” #1 (1981)
“Waiting On A Friend” #1 (1982)
“Going To A Go-Go” #1 (1982)
“Undercover of The Night” #1 (1983)
“Harlem Shuffle” #3 (1986)

Six numbers ones from the next five albums plus even "If I Was A Dancer" making #17... At least from 1978 to 1983 Canada was hot for them - and they couldn't even tour there to promote the music! Topping the charts with four singles one after other (1981-83) equels almost the record they did in Great Britain in 1964-65! That's impressive in this late part of their career. Go Canada Go!

(Another hot peak in Canada seemed to be 1967: all the singles ("Ruby Tuesday"-"We Love You"/"Dandelion"-"She's A Rainbow") topped the charts!)

That's right Doxa plus "Mixed emotions" and "Anybody seen my baby" later.

I was also impressed with "As tears go by" being a number one there as well. Was the song that got me into the Stones when I was 12 and a few weeks later they released Tattoo You and I heard "Start me up" and my Stones life began...

The Rolling Stones have had EIGHT #1 singles in the United States:

Satisfaction
Get Off My Cloud
Paint It Black
Ruby Tuesday
Honky Tonk Women (their biggest-ever U.S. hit)
Brown Sugar
Angie
Miss You

I don't know your source, but according to this: [www.1050chum.com] the best position of "As Tears Go By" was nyawning smiley 7.

By the way, you are quite same age and "Stones fan generation" as me. I was also hooked by "Start Me Up" and TATTOO YOU....

(1) "The Last Time"

(3) "Angie"

while "Get Off of My Cloud", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Paint It Black", "Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Honky Tonk Woman" were all #2.

What the hell is wrong with Spain?!!!??

Well, as absurd as it is, we could say that "Streets of Love" was a minor hit - or even more - if we look the European charts. I made the following strange observations while I was researching Scandinavian charts:

(1) It made #5 in Swedish Single Chart. That means that it is their biggest hit as long as the system covers (the oldest one that was listed was "Miss You" with its #6.)

(2) In Finland it made, much to my huge surprise, #10. That is their best chart position the net system covers (which is just since 1995) - but I am quite sure that is the only top ten hit since "Start Me Up".

(3) In Norway, "barely" #14...

(4) Denmark did the best of Scandinavia: #4! (I wonder how many copies JumpingKentFlash actually bought....)

It is true that at least here in Finland it got quite a lot of air in radio waves. Over-all, It is not an oddity that the song got quite nice response while played in European leg of the tour. What is the cause and what is the effect, one could ask?

while "Paint It Black" pubbling under.

I was a bit surprised that NETHERLANDS (that has reputation as a strong Stones country) has quite low number of chart toppers there:

(1) "Satisfaction" (1965)
(2) "We Love You/Dandelion" (1967)
(3) "Brown Sugar" (1971)
(4) "Angie" (1973)
(5) "Paint It Black" (1990)

While "The Last Time", "As Tears Go By", "Let's Spend The Night Together", "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Miss You" were #2.

I think the local speciality - with the success of "We Love You" - is the success of "Paint it Black" - taking the pole position after 24 years after its international relaese. Seemingly it wasn't relaesed before as a single in Holland - at least it didn't make Top Forty. Any explanations?

Doxa,
I think you might be wrong there.
Paint it black entered the Dutch charts 28th Mai 1966 ,stayed there for 13 weeks and got to nr1.Source Hitdossier 1958/1987

Okay, let's take a look at the results of the "perfect pupil". The CANADIAN pole poistions are:

(1) "Heart of Stone" (1995)
(2) "Satisfaction" (1965)
(3) "Get Off of My Cloud" (1965)
(4) "Paint It Black" (1966)
(5) "Ruby Tuesday" (1967)
(6) "We Love You/Dandelion" (1967)
(7) "She's A Rainbow" (1967)
(8) "Jumping Jack Flash" (1968)
(9) "Brown Sugar" (1971)
(10) "Angie" (1973)
(11) "Miss You" (1978)
(12) "Emotional Rescue" (1980)
(13) "Start Me Up" (1981)
(14) "Waiting On A Friend" (1982)
(15) "Going To A Go-Go" (1982)
(16) "Undercover of The Night" (1983)
(17) "Mixed Emotions" (1989)
(18) "Anybody Seen my Baby?" (1997)

That's impressive, huh! I would say that the local oddity is that "Honky Tonk Women" DID NOT make #1.... It only made #2, as did "19th Nervous Breakdown".

Oh thanks! That makes sense. I really find it strange that it wasn't relaesed or a hit then as it was all over the world. So it topped the Dutch Charts twice. That's great. Still, the success of its "second coming" in Holland is wondering me. Something just "clicked" there I guess (the hype for URBAN JUNGLE tour?)
