My vote goes for "Lesson number one, that you learned while you're young" from Indian Girl.

Sorry to drift from the topic just a shade, and true to your words, there are some clinkers as far as lyrics are concerned, but I think the worst Stones lyric looks like a masterpiece when compared to the crap and dribble that dominates the airwaves in the department store I work in. I am so sick of hearing "say what you need to say, say what you need to say, say what you need to say, say what you need to say" and "you better not be alone, you better not be alone, you better not be alone, you better not be alone". These same few lines are repeated endlessly in these modern "popular" songs. The art of songwriting and the crafting of a song has taken a back seat to stage presence - just get out on the stage and sing your crappy lyrics while everyone is enjoying watching the multitude of dancers that spring around all over the stage, probably just so the crowd doesn't really pay too close attention to the thrown together slop that is presented as music. Or have I just become too old?!!!!!

I see a red and I want to paint it black.

Hey - I see a line of trees and I want to cut them down.

I see a pothole I want to fill with water then fall in and drown.

Paint It Black is pretty bad.

Since I have skipped over it all but the first two times, I do not recall it exactly, but it is where MJ rhymes "hypocrite" and "full of shit"

Honorable mention: "Oh no, don't saw off me leg."

Here's my vote:

You're awful bright
You're awful smart
I must admit
You broke my heart
The awful truth
Is really sad
I must admit
I was awful bad

Glad to see Indian Girl highlighted. Surely the worst part is:
" All the children were dead
Except for one girl who said".
Crass or what?

I always cringed when I heard "I was a butcher cutting up meat..." as well as the part in Out Of Control (a song I love) where Mick sings, "and the homeless, they all know me..." but then this bit wins the bad grammar award:

Let's take a walk
Just you and me
And talk of days gone by
Across the fields
Under the trees
Let's speak of you and I

The lyrics of "Dear Doctor" ( some of them ) are by far and away worse than the lyrics of "Indian Girl" or "Had It With You" or just about anything else they've written.

For instance :

" There's a pain where there once was a heart
I'm sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please take it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar? "

WTF?????

It doesn't get much worse than that my friends.

when a set of hackneyed lyrics is written and sung with a nod and wink like "dear doctor" it's one thing - when it's done in a serious manner like in "streets of love" it's another....

Re: Lamest Stones lyric

Perhaps, but the lyrics are what they are.In my opinion they are much worse than even a track like " Far Away Eyes " which is a higher grade tongue-in-cheek song.

Re: Lamest Stones lyric

I really don't understand how Nirvana can mumble a rhyme with " a mosquito,my libido " and people say that it's supposed to be the greatest song ever." Sparks will fly, sharks will cry " is a better rhyme than that and it's sung in a less annoying manner.

I guess the first three songs of VOODOO LOUNGE are somewhat a strong statement that the lyrics should mean a shit in a rock and roll song... "Love is strong and you're so sweet...you make me hard, you make me weak..." By the time we get into ozzyosbourne-heavyrock-masturbation-clischeism of "You Got Me Rocking" and, finally, the jewel of the crown, "Sparks Will Fly", one has seriously think if there is irony or what a hec is going on in lyricwise that these guys on their fifties are trying to do.

Maybe in a way but,it pointed something out that half of the U.S. could not figure out on their own. Without turning this into a political thread, what's happening (or culminating) three and a half years later??

Re: Lamest Stones lyric

Reading this thread is hilarious. Some of these lyrics aren't just "bad" they are comically putrid. lol

I will however stick up for Rough Justice--I actually think thats a great tune, Ronnie's slide tone is killer and it WOULD have been SO much better if they left "gonna break your heart" instead of "never break your heart"--I mean that line coming from Mick wouldn't seem to pass the laugh test.

Also--Dear Dr, is totally tongue in cheek and in that respect its clever. It always sounds like it should have been a cover of some obscure Hank Williams song
or something, but I guess that shows that it is well done pastiche.
