.....and john r, I'm not a huge phish fan either, but I know people that go nuts over them. Here's how I keep up with jam bands:

A coupleof comments:

1. 38 Special formerly had two drummers - now just one. Charlie Daniels used to have 2 drummers. Now?

2. What's wrong with the term "jamband" - I think it means the musicians are skilled enough to improvise a song into uncharted territory. Sometimes (in fact usually in the hands of excellent players ala ABcool smiley there will be some wonderful moments - sometimes a trainwreck (Elmo on stage for example).

Jam bands = boring/put you to sleep

Re: OT: The Allman Brothers Band

I can completely understand how some people can't get in to the whole "jam band" thing. I've been attempting to get in to the Grateful Dead over the past 15 years or so (Hey, I'm only 30 - cut me some slack) and, after listening to "Live Europe" and starting with some of the Dick's Picks series, I think I'm just now getting it (hopefully). I'm still trying to warm up to Phish after all of these years as well (free soundboard MP3 versions of their last 3 shows in Hampton, VA have been made available by the band). This is a slow going process as well.

That's why I love the Allman Brothers Band. I think Gregg Allman is right when he says the ABB is not a "jam band" but a "band that jams." Despite the improvisational aspect of the ABB, their songs still have a clear structure that allows the listener to sort of "know what's going on." As a musician myself I come to see myself loving such bands more and more with each passing year as I myself mature musically. There's nothing better - in my opinion - than watching a guitarist like Derek Trucks (6 months younger than me) and asking dumbfoundedly, "now how the heck did he just do that." I also love the ABB's ability to combine all sorts of styles, including jazz, blues, rock and country. There are very few bands that could have made "At Fillmore East" and a couple of years later "Brothers and Sisters" and be respected for both works despite the difference in the two.

The ABB is probably my favorite band (I've spent more time and money seeing them than anybody else - was even backstage a couple of times, a guest of Butch Trucks and Kirk West, the band's archivist and Tour Mystic) but Bruce Springsteen and the E. Street Band and the Stones come in a close second. While the ABB doesn't have the energy the latter two bands have, the latter two will never come even close to possessing the musical virtuosity found in the ABB. All of them are great, just in different situations.

So, less than three hours until night two starts.

Peace Out,

E-Duane

It's the WAY they do them - even the good ones.A better option would be to go see Dickey Betts - who is coming to NYC in May

ok but you said you didn't like the setlist - looks like a pretty solid setlist of ABB classics, which it seemed like you like... dickey can still play the ol' les paul pretty well, but his voice is completely gone - yeah, even worse than gregg's....
