OT: The Allman Brothers Band

So, the ABB will be going on stage in ca. 10 minutes, opening up the first of 15 shows this month at the Beacon Theater in New York.

The band will be streaming each show live on the internet on the website www.moogis.com. The fee to subscribe is $125.00. With it you can watch each show live or later, as they will be archived until the end of September this year.

Being the big ABB fan that I am I just subscribed about an hour ago. This year's run is dedicated to Duane Allman and a host of special guests are expected (Levon Helm is rumored for tonight) such as Boz Scaggs and Eric Clapton.

I know some of you here are big ABB fans (well, maybe not as big as I am). Let's get ready for a wild three weeks to come. Well, the show's about to start. I'm out of here (I never thought I'd live to see the day that I'd be watching the ABB live from my living room in Frankfurt).

Peace,

E-Duane

I always loved Duane's work with Aretha, Pickett, Delaney & Bonnie, and so many others, and the first few ABB records - when Greg wrote most of the songs. Especially dig Idlewild South (now on gold disc - hear it!), Eat A Peach, parts of Brothers & Sisters, Fillmore, and then 1979's Enlightened Rogues. But with so many personnel changes and eratic albums after B&S they have become ID'd (ghettoized) as a 'Jam band' rather than one of the best and biggest American r&r bands of their era.

I became a fan in the early 90's during their umpteenth comeback. I saw them for the first time in 2003 with Warren and Derek. Fantastic show! HAVE FUN!!!

First guest tonight was Taj Mahal - he came out and did Leaving Trunk, 44 Blues and Statesboro Blues. The band opened up with Little Martha. By the looks of it this Beacon run is smoking already!

My point is that's a rather diminished category, befitting groups like Blues Traveller and many lesser bands, that certainly doesnt do them justice - or their legacy justice, as they were vastly influential and wrote many classic songs as well as (still, live) posessing an exciting and remarkable telepathy live...

Levon Helm is onstage right now. They just did Ophelia and are now doing I Shall Be Released.

They finished the mini-set with The Weight. Taj Mahal came back out to take a verse as well. Awesome stuff!

john r, you made a good point when you said that the Allman Brothers "posessing (sic) an exciting and remarkable telepathy live..." Thanks john r, that's a great definition of jam bands. I've had the pleasure of being a guest on the Allman's side stage (as a spectator) twice in the last few months, including an epic performance with John Paul Jones as a guest in December. They are one of the best jam bands out there. To me, "jam bands" is what I look for in a live performance. By the way, john r, are the Blues Travelers even still a band? I don't think so.

Lukester,ya didn't get the invite to the big apple. I love Levon Helm doing old The Band material. Don't really want to pay $150 to listen to live.....But wouldn't mind if someone posted this on Hot Stuff.grinning smiley

....and electric-duane, when I saw them in December, they did a killer version of "The Weight" with Derek's wife Susan Tedeschi singing some of the verses.

And thanks again for the Beacon reminders (as you have done in previous years)

Why did all these "southern rock" bands have two drummers? Can't one handle the job?

That would be great. I'm thinking maybe Dylan as the guest.

The audio quality was awesome - It couldn't have been better. The video quality was good in full screen mode and fantastic in the small "you-tube" sized mode. There were moments when the video was damn near perfect but, depending on the lighting, the colors were kind of muddled here and there. I can't complain, though, as I'm getting 15 concerts (ca. EU 6.90 per show) and I'm watching them from a completely different continent.

Thanks. My neighbor and I were thinking signing up for the feed. I guess I need to talk to him, again.

The Dead have two drummers, and so does Widespread Panic.....but these are jam bands.

the allmans are a jam band - the "southern" tag is just a geographical thang...

such a shame ABB is a NAB band...

Re: OT: The Allman Brothers Band

Jam Bands - were Coltrane's classic lineups "jam bands" - it's imo a marketing handle..As such it narrows the scope when it comes to the real cream of the (so called) genre. The ABB used to be considered a great rock n roll band, like the dead or Airplane. All these bands wrote a body of brilliant SONGS (unlike imo that group of instrumentally very proficient, but overly precious and song deficient, Phish), but also obviously improvise(d) in concert...The Meters reunited and instead of being perceived as a classic band, shapers of New Orleans funk, they get ghettoized as a jam band.

john r, obviously you have disdain for the moniker "jamband." I guess it's just a matter of opinion. I'm not sure why you refer to jambands as "ghettoized," but that moniker sounds kind of cool too. When I get home late tonight I'm gonna get ghettoized.
