Last year i went to visit Muscle Shoals studios and the woman who was there during Brown Sugar sessions, tells me that Keith plays so loud during the sessions that they put his amp in the restrooms and he finally says that it was a good Idea to have the right sound, so in the last takes the sound is différent because of this.

The 'final' version just came up...

[youtu.be]

They took drums, bass, Keith's main rhythm guitar and the acoustic guitar (Taylor?) to England for the overdubs. On this take there are several overdubbed electric guitar riffs from Keith.

Interesting. So the version with the arpeggios and Taylor's solo was done at Olympic. Taylor was playing those arpeggios as early as Altamont.

Richards wisely took his time to hone that second guitar part.

Piano was overdubbed at Olympic*

*Not so sure. It might have just been mixed out here and added back in because there is definitely piano on the basic track.

That song popularized open tuning G, add9 and sus4 chords usage, maybe. I am sure others used these techniques before Keith but the way Keef whackes the chords, that is the essence of his style; he owns it, nobody does it exactly like Richards and that is why he is the greatest riffmaker in rock and roll!

I like how you can hear how Mick had hit on the “Yeah yeah yeah” idea in the chorus, but, for the final recorded version, wisely saved them until the end (and added the “woo!”s).

Based on all available recordings, do you think this is one of the most worked on songs of the band? And did they know they had one of their best songs on their hands?

Maybe not. Keith did most of Happy in one day.The Beatles spent their most time on Maxwells Silver Hammer.

It's very likely that SFTD wins the award for most worked on song by The Rolling Stones, followed by Munich Hilton, I Think I'm Going Mad, Tumbling Dice and probably a tie between Loving Cup and Shine A Light.

Note from uploader Ronald starcjewski

From Muscle Shoals 12/3/69. They took a short break while Keith and Mick played around with the arrangement, but only made a couple of small changes. This was the next take after the break.

There are two sources for the recordings at Muscle Shoals. Stanley Booth, using a portable tape recorder, made recordings all three nights. The Maysles were only there the final night, but were not allowed to film the actual recording or overdubbing of the songs; just the playback after. Stanley was allowed to record while the Stones were actually recording, not just the playbacks.

The actual music played in the film Gimme Shelter from the playbacks was overdubbed with more polished versions. However, the original audio, including the chatter between playbacks, still exists. There are almost two hours of it. This includes the hotel footage while they were listening to rough mixes.

The person who had the collection of Booth recordings is no longer with us. I have no idea if they even still exist. Over the course of a couple years, I was invited to visit the collector and was able to hear the Booth recordings. I made very detailed notes while listening to those tapes. I estimate that the collector had at least four or five hours recorded on the tapes. The recordings I posted were made using my mobile, during a couple different visits, while the collector went out for a smoke. The recordings posted here were trimmed from longer recordings. I was sworn to secrecy, but when I learned of the collector’s passing last summer I made the decision to put these up.

Wow. It's a good thing they kept working on it! That's real dumpy.
