"The Rutles"

Just finished watching "The Rutles" for the first time.
Yeah, I know I'm thirty years late on this one!
Lots of Stones connections here, even down to the audience footage of young girls screaming that I remember from 25x5. Pretty sure I'm right about that.

But from the perspective of someone who's seen this film for the first time just now, want to know what gave me the biggest laugh?

Ronnie Wood appearing as a big bad Hell's Angel and afraid of the little girl "thumping" him!

Watch out Ronnie! It could happen again! grinning smiley

That movie was funny as hell back(what yr was it- 70's?)when it ran on TV when most people just had rabbit ears and received local networks! And of course we
smoked alot of good dope and got drunk watching it! Just like we did every weekend for SNL and Monty Python reruns. I loved it!

Might even be funnier than Spinal Tap! Yes, that is vintage footage of the Stones crowd and the footage in London was the premiere for A Hard Day's Night.

One of the funniest movies ever, and definetly in the same bracket as Spinal Tap. The musicianship is actually quite brilliant!

I actually saw Neil Innes & "The Rutles" live in Liverpool a couple of years' back and they were absolutely superb. The music was so good, you couldn't help but feel that you were existing in some kind of parallel universe.

Wasn't Neil Innes sued succesfully by the Beatles' publishers for plagiarism?

Yeah, "Get Up and Go" was deemed too close for comfort to "Get Back."

There was a large feature on the Rutles a while back in Uncut. As I recall it, what happened was that 'Get Up & Go' was left off the soundtrack because Lennon himself advised Innes that it was 'too close' and he'd almost certainly get sued for it.

Does anyone have the original vinyl Rutles album? One of the most brilliant record sleeves ever. As well as the booklet containing some of the script (Reporter ; "I'm standing at Che Stadium in New York - named after the Cuban guerilla leader, Che Stadium) it has a facsimile of all the ripped off Beatles album covers in superb minute detail. ("A Hard Days Rut", "Sgt Rutter's Darts Club Band" - plus the best of the lot "Tragical History Tour", with the song titles copied in the same font as the Beatles' equivalents - 'Denny Lane', 'W.C. Fields Forever', 'All You Need is Lunch', 'The Fool On The Pill', 'Your Mother Should Go', 'Hello Get Lost' etc). Brilliant.

We met Blondie C. at the one and only Rutles reunion here in L.A. this past year - Jagger sent a note to start the evening off!

A great movie!
Then and now ....
Wasn't there a line in the movie
Do you think the Rutles will get back together?
Mick: I hope not.

It's interesting how similar The Rutles' "All You Need Is Cash" is to "Anthology"
albeit somewhat shorter.
The Rutling Stones anyone?
Maybe they could use 25x5 as a basis!

That is Al Franken in that sketch. He was part of the original SNL cast, although he was mainly a writer I believe. I remember one bit he did on Weekend Update in January 1980 proclaiming it to be the Al Franken decade and he was selling souvenir copper Lincoln memorial coins (pennies).

There were a lot of problems with Idle and Innes over who owned what. Some of this must have been resolved now because of the tour and Archeology.

Brilliant movie, and brilliant music. What I love is that those songs are funny of course, but they are not a cheap parody (which is quite common). You can always say which Beatles' song is base for which Ruttles' song, but they are much more differnt from the originals then they seem when you hear them for the first time. And the movie - it is priceless...the sence of humor...exactly my taste! The Stones would be a great material for another movie like that.

The more you know about the Beatles, the more you will enjoy this 1978 classic. Cheese and Onions is my favorite song from the movie.

I feel the same way about Spinal Tap. I think it's "funny" for anyone who watches it, but you have to be a long time rock fan to get some of the little asides, and have already seen films like The Kids Are Alright to appreciate how brilliantly they lampooned rock n roll.

There was a documentary on the Beatles that I can't recall the name of that came out shortly before The Rutles, which was kind of the mirror image of that film.

Shouldn't it be spelt Complete (Beatles)?
