the 81 tour was arguably the worst ever Stones tour. I cant figure out why everybody gets so excited about it....only 19 December 1981 is worth a whip...

No comment on anything but some general observation of the 1981/82 tours: The setlist only had Honky Tonk Women and Tumbling Dice taken from the Mick Taylor era.

Still Life was also my intro to the Stones, as was LSTNT and Video Rewind. I remember how mysterious and exciting all the old footage was on that Rewind and the excitement of the live CD and movie, which I listened to/watched a zillion times.

Love all of Still Life, even the mad rush of Satisfaction. Very exciting!

That said, I caught them in Rome for ABB tour and was knocked out by the Satisfaction from that show too - quite often (even though it's a warhorse) I'd be quite happy to skip it as a live song. I guess for me the definitive live Satisfaction is to be found on that album.

More songs should go on the album if the ever get around to the re-issues. They played 6 songs at almost every show from Tattoo You, 5 from Some Girls and two from ER it would have made a stronger album had they included those songs. The last tour where the boys were a real working band. Shut your eyes when the cherry picker comes out though that was pretty tacky!! Keith and Ronnie had a great look on that tour though. Love the 1981 tour!!

Well yes - but you did forget about 4 of the highlights of 1981; the 2 acoustic tracks; Let It Bleed and Waiting On A Friend-...and also Black Limousine/Neighbours - those 2 really rocked
Come to think of it....Down The Road Apiece is probably the most cooking rocker done by the Rolling Stones after 1978, even though the only did it 5 times in '81. Especially the East Rutherford version of Nov 5th....it's worth an album of it's own
Little T&A is wisely included in your revisited Still Life though.....!

if you're gonna fantasize about a "makeover..why wouldn't you make it a double lp with the full show??.....after all,if you're gonna think, think BIG!!

It simply is my favourite tour -some bad shows, but most shows are brilliant. I still think Hampton is their best gig ever.

81/82 is The Stones in all their ragged glory. I fell in love with the Hampton show first time I heard it.

OK let's capitalize on Erik's recommendation. However, does my song order make sense?? I would like to have Satisfaction on this listing but not the Still Life version. What do you think??

New makeover:

(1981 Still Life)

Side one

Under My Thumb
Let's Spend the Night Together
Little T & A
Shattered
Beast of Burden
Twenty Flight Rock
Going to a Go Go

Side two

Start Me Up
Hang Fire
When the Whip Comes Down
Let it Bleed
Time Is on My Side
Just My Imagination
Waiting on a Friend

Lose Beast Of Burden, at least that B-side. I can't imagine any other versions of it being any good.

Put Neighbours in. Or even the terrible She's So Cold. And Black Limo.

OK here is latest makeover based on skipstones rec. w/o SSC. However, the song order is starting to confuse me. Any suggestions

Side 1

Under My Thumb
Let's Spend the Night Together
Little T & A
Shattered
Twenty Flight Rock
Black Limo.
Going to a Go Go

Side 2

Start Me Up
Hang Fire
When the Whip Comes Down
Let it Bleed
Neighbours
Time Is on My Side
Just My Imagination
Waiting on a Friend

I know some of the albums start with the actual show opener and end with it but the middle is always screwed up. Since they are quite concrete with their set lists, would it be better to have it be like the set list or how they had Still Life?

That would be cool to end the record with Waiting On A Friend though.

A makeover of this album would be good. I'd like it a lot more if there were the new songs on it more so even though I think that version of Time On My Side is outstanding.

Agree.

Hampton, however, is brilliant....The Tour was huge but it just doesn't grab me at all...Jagger's vocals/outfit, the many saxaphone solos, the huge colourful stage, the ridiculous crane act....

81-82 shattered blows away the voodoo version IMO , voodoo version is pretty good but has a little vegas tinge to it, no rough edges

I always liked the look of that tour. Perhaps the pastels are a bit dated, but the big, wide stage was great. And I also love the footage from LSTNT, especially the Phoenix footage, with the sun setting... Seeing the Stones perform in the daytime is a rare treat! I was 10 when that movie came out. It was the first film I ever saw on my own! I absolutely loved it. Today all I have is a vhs tape I bought on ebay... I long for the extended dvd re-issue someday... one among many Stones dream releases.

agree here. the mix is flat and lifeless. I had some boots before Still Life came out (Grande Finale and the complete Hampton tape) and was disappointed with the "official" sound.

at the time, I preferred their 1978 live sound (just compare Beast Of Burden live 1978 and 1981, check also When The Whip Comes Down live 1978 from Sucking In The Seventies and then hear 1981 live versions!), but a 1978 live album would have followed too close in the steps of Love You Live.
