OT - Dylan's Internet Chat Story
Posted by: Amused ()

I was watching Mozambique from Hard Rain on YouTube... Best song of freedom ever I think... But anyway, I got into comments. Here they are:

- Hey Bob Dyaln...if you are reading this...Hi

- Did you ever hear that story about the time when Bob was doing some web surfing and entered a chatroom where people were chatting about the meaning of Blowing In the Wind and Bob put in 'It's a naive attempt at a political understanding by a young ingnorant man' and some guy replied 'How the f*** do you know?' 'Because I'm Bob' 'Prove it' 'Okay I'll play (I forget the name of the song, but he never played it live) tomorrow night' And he did. Amazing

Is it true? Do you know any details? Seems like a great story!

This is an interesting story. I must admit I never heard of it before.
Does anybody know any details? What song he played to prove his identity perhaps?
It's hard to imagine Bob browsing the web and joining a chatroom ;-)

Wonder if Gazza knows anything about this somewhat unlikely story?

The following quote was posted recently on expectingrain.com:

I've been reading Patrick Humphries' Tom Waits biography, The Many Lives of Tom Waits. Here's a quote:

One of the best examples of just how much an artist could relish this anonymous interplay came in 1999. A network of Bob Dylan fans were scratching their collective electronic heads over the true meaning of 'Blowin' in the Wind'. Then, out of cyberspace, came a message saying that it was simply "a naive political plea by a young man". "And how the fvck do you know?" "Because I'm Bob." "Yeah, right..." Forced to prove his identity, "Bob" agreed to play his never-ever-performed 17-minute 'Highlands' onstage the next night. And sure enough, fifth song in, at the Coors Amphitheatre, Bob Dylan gave 'Highlands' its live premiere!

I've heard credible speculation that it was actually a roadie masquerading as Bob, a roadie who knew Highlands was going to debut the next night.

... why would anyone consider "a naive political plea by a young man"
such a trenchantly insightful analysis that only the songwriter would know??
something's missing from that story ... something like plausibility :E

It surely can be total bullshit, but there is still something Dylanisque, Bobby-like in that story...

Personally, I don't think Dylan would feel compelled to prove himself to anyone, much less an anonymous internet chat room person (like us). Instead, the roadie theory makes sense to me.

I am Mick Jagger, and to prove it, I will not tour with the Stones or anyone else in 2009. So there!

And when we do tour again, we will play the same songs every night and Blondie will stand backstage and play lead guitar while Keith and Ronnie pose. Mark my words, this will happen!

Not until after I retire from performing, as it will give me an excuse to get out of the house, go on promo tours and bang 18 year old escorts in a variety of different cities.

Yes, as that is the only thing he's capable of playing these days, and then only if we soak it in vodka first. On a positive note, I hear his girlfriend has a younger sister

No one who works for Dylan on the road would dream of pretending to be him.
Bobby boy runs a tight ship.

I remember the story well. Lukester recounts it pretty much as it took place.

the 'roadie' explanation sounds the most plausible to be honest
