Hey what about Goodbye Babylon on Dust-To-Digital....

6 CD's of rare gospel .... Well detailed book with recording details
lyrics etc...All housed in a massive wooden box that looks like it was hand
made by some carpenter from Nazareth.......Even comes with real cotton bolls...

My brother's got that - he's into the "boxed set-as-fetish piece" thing, he also has the Charlie Patton set on Revenant (Who Is The Masked Marvel? [it's Charlie Patton, by the way]) - which is just ridiculous.

Great set though - I'm a sucker for packaging, and the cotton was just hilarious. A thing of beauty.

EDIT:
I forgot to include the Complete Fun House boxed set on my boxed set list. I guess owning a boxed set that includes 20 takes of "Loose", qualifies me as a bit of a boxed set fetishist as well.

Ghost you own this thread!! You mentioned some that I myself have but had overlooked. The Hank Williams one for sure..and Phil Spector too.
I bought Phil Spector's Box Set for one track only. Could not find it anywhere else.
The Checkmates' version of "Proud Mary". Still ranks as one of my alltime favorite recordings of anything, anytime, anywhere.

Otenneau, where are you from? Yes, I am Italian but not in Italia anymore. Battisti is an absolute mystery to me, how he never became worldwide. IMO one of the greatest songwriters; together with Mogol they were a team heavensent. The Box Set is actually not the best recording for him, if you are trying to get a good overview; career spanning. There is a CD set of 4 discs called "Pensieri E Parole" which is better. I am so glad you know him. One time I was driving with one of my band mates and I was playing "Anna" by Battisti. And he just freaked. "What IS this?? The best music I have ever heard." And this was in the grunge days... In the English R&R world I have only ever heard one person mention him, and that was Bowie who was praising him. Are you familiar with Mina? La tigre do Cremona?

PalaceRevolution, I am French, living in UK, but have lots of Italian friends and spend quite some time there, so this explains that. Yes, Anna indeed... I have the "Le Avventure di Battisti e Mogol" CDs, they're pretty good. But I also have the first album, which includes my all-time fav: La Mia Canzone per Maria, and Nel Sole, Nel vento, Nel Sorriso, Nel Pianto which I feel is the song on which the soul influence is the clearest - chords, saxophone...

Battisti is awesome. It's not b-rate US music; there is much italian flavour too, alla Nino Rota kind of stuff and yes, the lyrics and melodies are great, moving and also instant hits, so singeable. Actually, I know most of the hits on guitar so you might be pleased to learn that in Cambridge, UK, a bunch of academics now sing the chorus to Non é Francesca quite often on Friday nights! There is also an italian bloke who is very good pianist and he plays and I sing. So you see, Battisti is slowly becoming world-wide! I do feel he's like music's best-kept secret outside of Italy.
"Hai ragione anche tu!!!" haaaaa... devo ascoltare Anna subito... Anche se la phrase "quanti quanti si ha gridato lei" é veramente un po... diciamo... over the top, pero... anche cosi vera!

Oh forgot to say, yes of course I know Mina. Although - so sorry - was never a big fan. My italian friends struggle to forgive me. I don't know, something a little metallic in the voice.
But hey, I am even rather fond of Elio e le storietese!

...a real box set.

Re: OT What Box Sets Do U Have?

LOL, that is funny about the guys singing "Francesca". My girlfriend LOVES the song "Dieci ragazze", especially that stop in the middle of the song, where he just raps for a minute. I don;t know if you can hear it in your head right now.
Oh yes, Battisti e' l'anima dell Italia. Not any faux US about him. But that is why I also always drift to his Mogol era. He did try to move to LA once, you know? I think to give it a shot, but saw it wasn't for him; or viceversa.
I think "E Penso A te" is one of the greatest love songs ever written.
And you mention italian flavor. The opening verse to "I giardini di Marzo" is some of the best imagery and music put together. Reminds me of being a kid in Roma.
And you don't like Mina; Ouuww. I actually ran into some vintage RAI TV clips on youtube of Battisti and Mina duet-ing together on a bunch of the songs he wrote for her.

Rockman I need to get my butt over to photobucks. Right now.

I just relistened to the whole thing after Asheton died. Pretty sure it's value has gone thru the roof so I'm glad I didn't hesitate to purchase it.

Did anyone mention JEFFERSON AIRPLANE LOVES YOU? That's a good one.

Love the alternate versions of "Fairytale Of NY" on Pogue Mahone. I don't own the set myself, but my brother had it in heavy rotation for a bout 3 weeks, so I heard a good deal of it everytime I was over his place. Gonna have to pick it up at some point...
