"Open the vaults"
Keep seeing this line in posts for years and years. What are we expecting from it? I mean - open them, and then what? Is this the final step in the Stones' career? You open them, and we hope there will be...what? Unheard , finished songs?
Radically different mixes of "Between the Buttons"? Live film footage of shows?

El Mocambo 77, and maybe the 100 Club 86 show. This will last us as long as a prime new boot lasts. The SW outtakes was radical, and we ate it up in 2 weeks; an wanted more.
I would love to see great unreleased material; am all for it. But I wonder if the Stones really have that much, that we havent seen or heard, to round out their illustrious career.
I do wish they'd give access to whatever Jagger has back there; I just think they should do it anyway - not as the answer to be-all.

there's gotta be loads of stuff that most of us would love. everyone thought the bootleggers had leaked all the good dylan stuff long before his bootleg series (now 8 releases strong) began. it's a cryin' shame and perhaps even a criminal offense.....

Does it matter? It matters as much as any and all of the official actual albums.

So be it. Bitch all you want - it means NOTHING.

Like compared to the case of Dylan, there might be a lot of stuff we don't even know about. But based on what we do know about by now my speculation is:

(1) There might about finished or nearly finished material to fill about one full album. A'la METAMORPHOSIS VOL. 2. I don't know if this is really needed a piece of work. The Stones have released just about all relevant stuff they have. They are not at all so productive like Dylan is. Otherwise they need to do TATTOO YOU, VOL 2. That is as much as can be said of original material.

(2) Then there is the case of alternative takes. Perhaps "You Got The Silver" with Mick's vocals and that sort of thing would gather some interest, but I doubt there is not need for any EXILE ON MAIN STREET: ALTERNATIVE MIXES kind of thing. Perhaps the classical albums could filled with extra material to satisfy this demand. (For example, GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! could be treated like The Who's LIVE AT LEEDS.) Perhaps there is already something happening now to this direction?

Side note: I take some of my words back. Perhaps they could do an album of alternative takes and unreleased cuts from their golden and most productive period from 1968 to 1972. If there are some gems, there are from this period. That might make an incredible album indeed. The other possible album could be MARCONI SESSIONS - their other period of productive sessions that would produce the stuff from SOME GIRLS to UNDERCOVER.

(3) I think the most relevant material comes from from their concerts, both audio and footage.. The first thing is to rerelease in a new superb form the stuff that is already released in one form or other. MARQUEE '71, LADIES & GENTS, BRUSSEL AFFAIR, AUX ABOTTOIRS, HAMPTON '81,.. This would also balance the situation of their live releases at the moment. People all around the world should also have a possibility to see the band in its prime. This NEEDS to be done.

(4) This would be backed up with the possible not yet known footage (or audio).

Side note 2: My personal wet dream would be like: release a series of ROLLING STONES TOUR SERIES I-IX, and include all the relevant material to be found in as great form as possible. Their incredible history as a touring band should be documented like this.

(5) Anything done by the band since 1989: do not touch!

Or then something completely different....tongue sticking out smiley

concerning outtakes, the 60s would deliver the most finished "releasable as is" material. from the 70s onwards, the well runs dry. Tattoo You cleaned the 70s vaults to a certain extent. whats left are cover versions like Drift Away, We Had It All, My Last Plea and probably not more than a handful of original songs like Save Me and Claudine. Later on, theres stuff like For Your Precious Love and probably not much else - speaking of FINISHED TRACKS.

Apart from these finished tracks which could be released "as is", all other material has got to be WORKED ON, and this includes well-known outtakes like Living Is A Harder Love, Fiji Jim, Yellow Cab, Gangsters Maul and the like. Do they want to work on unfinished outtakes to make them releasable? Is Jagger willing to write or finish lyrics for stuff recorded decades ago? I think thats the question at stake.

If not, I would agree with Doxa, maybe theres two albums worth of releasable outtakes from the 70s onwards, but not much more.

I dont believe for a minute that they would release promising, but without further work half-assed stuff like Honest Man or DW outtakes like Goin' Back To Memphis.

what has surfaced thru bootlegs vs. what is still locked away in vaults...two different things....check thru some of the well-regarded session logs and you'll find there are loads of tunes that have been recorded and never surfaced. how finished any of these are remains unknown...but even in dylan's project, most of the songs are in unfinished states, too....

Well, as an example the best track on the 3CD Beatles Anthology (for me) is John dong his very first run through of Strawberry Fields.
Basic, rough, not better than the final version, but just the beginnings of what became a classic.
There must be comparables in the Stones archives.

This has been talked about a lot before. The point is, no one really knows what is and is not finished. You can't just assume that the rest of the 1970s recordings are not done because they didn't make Tattoo You or as B-sides. There are still plenty of songs leftover from the same sessions they culled tracks for for Tattoo You.

My whole point of it means nothing is just that - until anything ever comes out, it's meaningless. It would be, of course, wonderful if they did release things. I'm really really really hoping that the so called Universal reissues actually have something that is 'previously unreleased' or even remixes, etc...SOMETHING. Rarities, as nice as it was for me to finally be able to hear Lonely Nights and Let It Rock and I Just Want To Make Love To You live was worth the price of the comp.

But Virgin showed their true colours with that comp - the details are wrong, the publishing is goofy. So maybe it will be a collector's item but only because it's so poorly done. The packaging is great, it's a great idea, it's just that they let an idiot handle the wording.

The Stones could release several comps like that of previously unreleased as well as released (say, Think I'm Going Mad, One Hit (London Mix), etc...) that isn't on CD and maybe some of the unique single versions (which is really only saying the edit versions) of some songs that aren't on one of their 35 hits comps....

I very much agree with this.
I also believe that there is a lot that could be released. But I believe we know about most of it; we suspect or know the existence of it. I don't think there is much jawdropping stiff that we don't know about.

The musicians are bitching they can't make money on CD's anymore. They have the golden goose that will sell CD's but refuse to release it. :scratches head:

I have an old CD called 'From the Vaults' that has a high quality SB version of SFTD from the 1970 tour, but fades out during Keith's solo. Sure would be nice to hear the rest of that song. Other than Ya-yas, probably the best concert version I've ever heard.

yep - got that too - first time i listened to it, i was blown away....and then shattered when it ended so soon. what a tease...from what i heard, it threatened to rival the ya-ya's version....

I very much doubt there is anything in the vaults worth really dreaming or wishing for. I hope I am wrong. The last time the vaults were open really was in 1981 with the Tattoo You album. It was Mick’s project and it proved to be a cash cow idea. Don’t you think he would have done the same again and make even more cash? Specially when they have been desperately looking for some quality music. A Bigger Bang is a Stones repackage with different titles. Are they saving it for the will? Bullshit. There is nothing in the vaults and if there is I think it’s a shame.
