Blinded By Love
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Air Studios, Montserrat, West Indies, March 29 - May 5, 1989 and
Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, May 15 - June 29, 1989

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, acoustic guitar
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, harmony vocals, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - acoustic guitar
Chuck Leavell - organ
Matt Clifford - piano, harmonium
Luis Jardim - percussion
Phil Beer - fiddle, mandolin
Bernard Fowler - backing vocals

The queen of the Nile, she laid on her throne
And she was drifting downstream on a barge that was burnished with gold
Royal purple the sails, so sweetly perfumed
And poor Mark Antony's senses were drowned and his future was doomed

He was blinded by love

The Philistines paid for Samson's blind rage
The secret that two lovers share should never have been betrayed

He was blinded by love
He was blinded by love

Now it's no use crying or weeping
You better lock up your soul for safe keeping
Promise me

The poor Prince of Wales, he gave up his crown
All for the trivial pursuit of a parvenu second-hand lady
So lovers beware, if you lose your heart
Careful now, don't lose your mind, don't mortgage your soul to a stranger

Don't be blinded by love
Don't be blinded by love

Blinded by love
Blinded by love

Produced by Chris Kimsey & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Steel Wheels” LP
(CBS 465752-1) UK, August 28, 1989

Awful. Jagger never sang worse (When he sings "The Nile" I curl up my toes). And the melody ain't special.

I love it. i know others find it a bit cheesy, but i love the sound and the guitar playing. Jagger's singing might be a bit over the top. LOL

This might be the worst set of lyrics in the repertoire.
That melody reminds me of those Schlager LPs from Germany in the 70's; the pseudo Iberian. See "Fernando" by Abba

Yep, This tune is as bad as it gets. I think it is the lesbian cousin of "Biggest Mistake".

I've just re. read the lyrics (first time since buying the record) and I can't see why people think they're bad, it's just a different angle on an age old thing, LOVE. What's wrong with that?

This tune feels like a precursor to Streets Of Love. I'd say it's a filler tune.

i wish they never put this on the album....I have really been getting into Steel Wheels....Just can't get into this song or Break the spell...goes on to long.
BBL---Didn't even make the cut for Jaggers album....a poor tex-mex country album...
anyway steel wheels is sounding better and better...SAD Sad Sad they included BBL to SW!!

Hot Stuff, when you say SW is sounding better and better, do you mean because of the Bootversions, the Rough Mixes taking it's place?

I've always wanted to like this one, but it's never happened. I don't mind the Euro stylings, but the production is pretty anemic.

I believe Chris Jagger is credited for helping mick with these lyrics... Did he have an encylopedia or something? The History Channel approach is a very juvenile way of trying to be sophisticated. But I guess mick thinks it worked on "Sympathy." Another go at it is on "Saint of Me," where it's more coherent.

"The barge she sat in, like a burnished throne,
Burned on the water: the poop was beaten gold;
Purple the sails, and so perfumèd, that
The winds were lovesick with them..."

I think Will Shakespeare should sue.

It's certainly not a skip track, and I'd even go as far as to say that the song has a certain charm about it.

Not one of their best, but a lot better than most bands' best.

The lyrics and singing are a helluva lot better than that awful "Rock and A HArd Place" or "Terrifying". Thats why I like the monitor mixes and demos better than the released techno crap!

It's okay - not a complete throwaway.

the version on the steel wheels out takes certainly has a more authentic ring to it.

sorry, guys, for me this song (Blinded By Love) is one of the worst songs of the stones ever, by far their worst on SW. i don´t like at all the way micks sings (especially the phrase with the already mentioned "queen of the nile...). and i may add that i like SW in general, and this includes also "Rock and A Hard Place" (i consider it a good stones rocker) or "Terrifying" ( a ok-song for me).

I actually kind of like this track. It has a gentle, country twang that is rather endearing, and the lyrics may be contrived but they hold my interest. The harmonies are nice too. The production is smooth but not cloying.

Not a high point in their career, but not a low point either.

A beautiful, country flavored song with excellent lyrics and instrumentation. You could rip Sad Sad Sad, Rock and A Hard Place, and Can't Be Seen (yechh) off Steel Wheels, but not this one.

A tune, like Can't Be Seen, I've grown to really appreciate.

Wheels is a fine album, with 5 tracks from near enough the top shelf (Slipping, Almost Hear, Terrifying, Break Spell, Cont Drift), with others almost as good - Sad, Sad, Sad, Mixed Emotions, Hearts for Sale.

Blinded by Love I'd skip sometimes, listen to at others; over the years have grown to really like it. Love the lyric, the slight Keef harmonies on some lines, and the chorus.

It's another modern great song where they are just trying to craft a nice song and not "be the Rolling Stones."

Taking the releases from 1989 onwards you could easily craft a really nice playlist of Stones ballads and soft rock tunes.

I disagree with all the negativity from 10 years ago!

I was walking through Jackson Square in New Orleans by the church one evening years ago, it was nice out, and as I got to the Cabildo someone living in an apartment in the Pontalba near Charters st was blasting this on their gallery and I was blown away at how good it sounded. I never hated the song but I never got into it but hearing it like, very loud and clear, that changed my mind.
