Stern is an actor, pretends to be a real sleazoid, but I'm glad the Stones don't go on his show. It's always about T&A, very insulting if you are a woman who respects herself. I'm sure Mick & Keith could handle Howard very well, but why should they?

Maybe because Howard Stern is an untalented, unfunny dickhead?....Just a guess on my part.

That didnt stop them doing the Ed Sullivan Show.

None of the Stones ever went on the UK's long-running, institutional Michael Parkinson chat show either.

Perhaps they never saw themsleves as mainstream enough to sell their souls to such middle-of-the-road pap.

...Bill Wyman allowed himself to get a grilling from Sue Lawley, on her chat show, mind!

Ouch. Way before my time, but I didn't know Ed was thought of that way.

Howard Stern is very funny and clearly has had and continues to have a huge influence on all media. Having said that why do the Stones need to do his show???......or Letterman or Leno??....

Funny how supposed "squares" like Ed can have such an impact on R&R.

I think if you listen to the AC./DC interview (Angus and Brian) with Howard from a few months ago, what you will remember about the hour is:

1. Howard hounding Brian and Angus by consistently asking them if they cheat on their wives while on tour.
2. How come Angus and Brian have never been to each other's homes.
3. Hearing a lecture from Howard on why they should quit smoking cigarettes.

What about the music, Howard?

I could say I totally understand why the Stones don't go on the show.

Especially considering he hated it. He had those acts on his show for their impact on viewing figures.

At 10 years old, that's the only reason I watched the show. Who cares about someone on a unicycle spinning plates around on a stick, anyway?

At 10, I was too old for him, but I did enjoy the comedy too, especially Alan King.

Whatever influence Howard Stern ever had, he marginalized it when he sold his soul to satellite radio. Sure, he got paid (ah, the better to finance the hot new wife's alimony when she dumps his has-been arse), but his audience is a small fraction of what it once was. Without his former audience, his influence is diminished, if not bupkis.

The Stones are established elder statesman have no need to pander to that hack Stern, whereas they needed to pander to Ed Sullivan 40-something years ago because they were young and just starting out.

So the Irishman Sullivan had a "little Italian mouse" on his show. What was up with that?

.....That's right, as elder statesmen the Stones now pander to Jann Wenner and Matt Lauer instead...but that's kind of the point...they get to choose what vehicle they use to get their message out.

Another act that Michael Parkinson never got was Frank Sinatra, who I suspect was pretty elusive when it came to interviews on US TV also.
Also the Dalai Lama has never appeard. Not that Parky gave the artists a particularly rough time. Mick would have been able to handle him without any bother.
When you are at the top of the tree, why bother. Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Olivier, Albert Finney rarely gave interviews, Dylan likewise.
It all adds to a certain mystique of course.
Not that Mick and Keith have been reluctant to be interviewed by the music press and other outlets - of course they can pretty much control the output, so in the end are just PR exercises.
So in the end, it seems to come down to control, as much as anything.
Which in its own way is quite revealing.
The Stones have never done a "South Bank Show"a highly rated UK Arts programme.
The Stones did a documentary which featured their journey to Morocco in the 1990's to record....name escapes me...which was interesting, to a certain degree...
As for Mick's Being Mick: the less said about that the better!
The best UK TV interview shows are those where there is no audience, i.e pure studio affairs. Of course most of the listening public do not want anything too deep, so superficially reigns supreme.
So, on this occasion, you get what ya want.

The popularity of Howard Stern is a direct reflection on the state of the United States. A greedy radio shock jock can generate more interest for people than world affairs - The "dumbing down of America"

Everyone rates everything by how much money you make its horrendous. Yes Howard is clever it does not mean that he has loads of talent.

I really enjoy it when Howard Stern interviews rock stars.
He seems to be a genuine rock fan who's not asking formal questions like a regular journalist would do. He's his own boss and asks questions from his own fan point of view. I also like how he's not afraid of asking direct and sometimes rude questions.

Some examples:

Some Stones content:

Plus this thread is four years old and Howard just keeps on rolling, despite the haters. Bigger than ever. It would be uncomfortable to have Mick be interviewed by Howard. Mick matadors the hapless media and has his way and Howard would hammer away at him. Keith might have a laugh with the whole thing. Bill better never go on that show.

Sometimes I wish Howard was a little more knowledgable, because he really does get some of these guys to open up.

I like Howard as a comedian (or artist) but his radio show is just cheap and often tasteless. Howard is really intelligent though behind his overblown apparation.

I watched Howard Stern's interview with Roger Waters. The guy is a dope. Almost as bad as Letterman. To Waters' credit, he was diplomatic and took everything in good humour.

Unless you are a pathetically desperate, attention whore there is no need to go on the Howard Stern Show.

The Daryl Hall interview on Howard Stern show was a good one. He was reluctant to have him on his show but it ended up being a funny interview. Worth checking out on YT if you have some time to kill.
