Sorry, I need to keep these coming. I can't resist. Anyone who think the soft-porn version of "Jumping Jack" in ABB is worth of any praise, should take a look at this... in the end of the song, there is a long pause while teh people cry for an encore. Anyone here spotted in the audience?

"In a sweet old country where I come from, nobody ever works, nothing gets done..," This song has never in more proper context than it is here, think of Thatcher and all (my god, it was just few years prior "Let's Work" - how quickly the things changed, and Mick mostly...).

This IS hilarous performance, the out of tune horns ice the cake.

The recent hit played freshly - especially listen Bill Wyman's bass!! Bill was hot that night (as in the tour over-all)!

My recollection of this show is that THOSE were the days that you could take photographic equipment in, I remember I borrowed a 300mm zoom lense off my then girlfriend's father, and of the innumerable shots I took, 5 were reasonable when not taken up to larger than 10 x 8 ... so they're framed, together with the ticket stub.

To remind myself of that "era" I periodically watch "Lets spend The Night Together" by Hal Ashby, and I don't know if others would agree, but off ALL the tours the Stones have ever done, and of ALL the openers they've ever employed, that use of Under My Thumb as the opener in 1981/82 is for me pretty much unsurpassed, I think it's up there with the best ever.

I also think the choice of 'Land of hope and Glory' at the end of that show (as seen on the pro shot video of the 2nd night) was wonderful. For the non-UK shows that summer, it was the '1812 Overture', I think.

You're right about the photography. In some ways it was a pain, as your view got frequently blocked by someone's arse perched on top of a pair of shoulders, but it was certainly a more innocent age than what was the case from a few years later, when the bands got so precious about making money from these things and developed a Nazi-esque intolerance to fans taking photos for their own private use.

At the end of the Leeds show, they played Tony Bennet's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco"!!

Somehow, it seemed perfect.

Maybe an end-of-tour nod to Bill Graham?

Great thread by the way! This is what it's all about!

That's definetly the Wembley roof in the background, and there's a similarity in Mick's clothing from the first night.

It's worth remembering too, that the light blue jacket that Mick is wearing in one of the photos, would no doubt be used for Time Is On My Side only, and nothing else.

I can't think of any other reason!

BTW, I remember on my way home from the first Wembley gig, hearing the news that Northern Ireland had beaten hosts Spain 1-0 in the World Cup. Probably their most famous win EVER!!

Has the "Make The World Go Round" vinyl boot ever made to a CD-R transfer? I recall some moons ago Silkcut announced an attempt but as far as I know it has never seen the light of day...

Yeah the playin was sloppy at times but they sure rocked.

Britney - I have transferred my vinyl to CD-R. Let me know if you would like a copy.

thats correct - that game was indeed 25.6.82. Certainly our greatest night ever, although as I wasnt in Valencia that night, the win against you lot in September 2005 beats it personally as I WAS there.

Anyway - sorry to get off topic. Do carry on.

She's So Cold - I know what happened, why they bombed that one so bad so much - Mick's hair wasn't long enough and in these Wembley vids it's really short. Almost looks like a dork. I like how Mick decided, well, it's a mess - might as well start right - right - uh - ummmm - HERE. I think he's the reason Charlie has always been able to keep the band together timing wise, not Keith. Ha ha.

Hang Fire - that is horrible - those awful horns! I've NEVER heard that before! YUCK! What happened? How was that allowed!?

Start Me Up - yikes. That's fresh alright - like a dead fish on a dock!

Wow - those are - it was a different band than the 1981 US tour band! Some of those tunes sound almost completely different! It's almost like they're missing a spark plug.

Logie, did you like it?

Having seen the Stones in Newcastle two days earlier, nothing on earth (not even the torrential rain) was going to stop me from travelling down to London for the first of their two Wembley shows.

Back on their old stomping grounds in what amounted to a reclamation of lost rites, this was a no-frills, no-additives, take-no-prisoners Stones performance of the very highest calibre; a statement of intent, if you like, with all five of them at their loudest, most uncompromising, ball-busting, back-to-basics, best.

Even before the Stones had took to the stage, it had become clear from my position among the swaying, rain-drenched, front-of-stage throng, that the inclement conditions were serving only to add to the incredibly tense atmosphere that had began to build up from the moment that the J Geils Band had completed their support set.

After all, it had been six long years since the Stones last played in London and an awful lot of water had passed under the bridge in that time. Punk had been and gone, and along with it, the ideals of a British music press who, a few years earlier, had come to the conclusion that many of the old guard had overstayed their welcome and had to be wiped out; a sentiment that was fine in principle but in reality, was to bring forth a tidal wave of dross, the like of which hadn’t been witnessed since the days of Bobby Vee and Neil Sedaka.

Dress it up any way you like, but this so-called ‘new wave’ was little more than a marketing umbrella under which any new conforming act could be positioned, providing that they were willing enough to sell their souls and conform to their record company’s exacting demands. In return for such acts of subservient puppetry, they would be thrust into the public domain as the next big thing, irrespective of the fact that most of the drivel that these weedy, pathetic, limp-wristed, arseholes were putting out, was about as far removed from the spirit of punk as anything that even Yes or ELP could conjure up.

Indeed, as Jagger himself had pointed out in a brilliant 1980 NME interview, you know things have become bad when the Theme from MASH gets to number one in the UK charts!

All of which placed the next two hours very much into context.

Witnessing the Stones that night reminded me of why I ever got into music in the first place and why it has completely dominated my life from since a time before I could even walk. For a time however, I really thought we had lost the Stones forever; but there they were once again in the flesh, impudent, bold as brass, louder than ever, large as life, and in-your-face without a bye or leave.

The Stones were absolutely amazing that night, and it was shock-and-awe tactics from the off; far from perfect, and at times, gloriously out of tune, but they rocked like never before, almost as if their lives depended on it.

Normal service had been resumed.

Shit, man - that was awesome!

I've been watching those clips - and others - few times and those verify the points you say - it's their homeground, and they've been reading the press, and seeing the trends coming and going, too - I think they had an extra adrenaline going there. I think the amount of mistakes they do, is a sign of some kind of nervousness, to show the whole London who's the true boss in the business, and let the dogs spark as much they do. But like you say, the band is far from perfect, out of tune and all, but goddamn they rock convincingly. No prisoners taken, indeed. Dirty, powerfull, and dangerous, The Rolling '@#$%& you' Stones. My band.

My 1st stones show......an incredible night (26th june).

I was obsessed with Keith at the time and watched his every move .he NEVER hit Ronnie.
I was in the crush ,slightly to the left of centre.

was lucky enough to see them again at leeds a month later. Almost a different band when they came back in 89.

(Bold by me). Indeed. Watching and listening to clips - the band makes mistakes with huge percent all the time - nothing seem to work in teh beginning "She's So Cold" - but they still roll - but just watching the impressions in face of Bill and how they interract with each other - I mean musically - they are a like big one organ, breathing rock and roll. And all of it is up to five members of the band - they carry the whole thing olely by their own groove as a 'proper' rock and roll should do. They NEVER be the same again. The contrast is HUGE compared to 1989/1990 tour. I can understand why some people even prefer the safe and sure, professionalized Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle band to the insecure, shakey, druggie band of 1982 but my opinion is that something CRUCIAL was lost during teh 80's. As far as I am concerned, The 'true' Stones never survived the bloody decade. They went in as the greatest rock and roll band of the world and came out as the most expensive Rolling Stones cover band there is. Of course there would be wonderful mements and shows from 1989 on, but something that I sense in those Wembley clips is gone - it is SO CLEAR to me that I almost cry...

- Doxa
yeah.....and they were playing very close to eachother ...i miss that....btw this is a great thread i just love it ..so many thanks!
