So which is the best live version of this classic rocker?

I HATED the wimpy version from the '94 tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think, exactly the '94 version was strong! Much better as during Licks or Bigger Bang.

Mmmm. The 94 and Licks versions - Mick isn't exactly convincing now is he?

I'm gonna go with the LP version.

The version from the Happy Birthday Nicky boot (DAC-017). It's from Perth, February 24, 1973.

I'm with django on this one, so Perth, 1973 gets the vote.

Mind you, I'd give away my last packet of seed for a decent recording of the Hollywood Palladium 1972 version!

Yeah, there's some live version I have from 72 and or 73 that is smokin'. Really fast, Mick's screaming - way more out of the hat than any other live versions.

Perth 1972. Full of energy, and one of the few versions that Mick doesn't mix up the verses, as I recall

I have to vote for the 72-73 version too. even though Mick had to strain and carry the vocal by himself(sometimes with better results than others!)but anything thats been tried since using the b/u singers has been terrible. I dont know why the vocals just dont jell.

This song just has never worked live, period. It's a pity, because it is easily one of my allround favorite Stonescuts. Jagger can't settle on a melody approach. Since it is so low in the register he keeps jumping up into some note that fits in theory, but doesn't really sound greta. In the studio they just have him up in the mix with the low voice , which sounds wonderful "plug in flush out fiiight @#$%& and feed.."; and they double him up with a hi harmony too. Plus the whole BU vocals arrangemnt in the chorus is a wonder; combined with the horns. And the leadvocal snaking in between.
In 94 it came closest .

Rocks Off often sounded sluggish during the ´72/´73 tours but they totally nailed it @ NYC 07/25/72 (2nd show)

Although I refer the 72-73 versions for energy level, for my money, one of the better later day versions of Rocks Off can be found on the '94 professionally shot souvenir show as recorded at Giants Stadium...

I think many of their Sticky Fingers/Exile era songs sounded the best on the '73 Winter Tour. "Bitch" was great on that tour.

'94 and '02 - If Mick ain't gonna crank the song, the fire's simply gone.

This was a stronger show than the Brussels compilation, but sadly not as clean a recording.

I agree Steven. The energy was much better, and I've ALWAYS preferred Nicky's playing to Billy Preston's.
