Thanks, Maria, for giving me a chance to review my spanish... I visited Toledo in 1990... What a wonderful place!

Thanks, BV, for maintaining this excellent site. You and everyone else on this board never fail to keep me up to speed on what is most important in our world-- the affairs of our boys. Viva (viven? vivan??) los Rolling Stones!!

IORR people - web statistics
Posted by: bv ()
Date: April 1, 2008 14:27

I have done some basic reports on the IORR.org web traffic. More than one million people visited IORR last year. Actually close to two million people on IORR last year, se updated numbers below... Every month these people visited IORR an average of half a million times, with a peak of +30% visits during the summer European Tour. See number of visits and where the people come from below. There are visiters from almost every country in the world, more than 130 countries in the list.

This is approx 50% of the total IORR web traffic 2007:

This is approx 50% of the total IORR web traffic 2007:

I added measures to a buch on "not mesured" iorr web pages
last week of March and as you see the correct numbers are now
in fact a lot higher than listed above. IORR has been built
over 12 years time so quite a few pages are different in location
and structure. There are probably still pages not measured,
but I will get to these too soon. This is March 2008,
first 3 weeks not all of IORR, last week most of it probably:

I keep all analysis of the IORR web on an anonymous level due to respect of the privacy of the individuals, but it is quite interesting to see how some visitors spend their time on IORR. Some numbers from the IORR visits yesterday, i.e. from one single day:

15 persons spent the entire day on IORR, doing 10 or more visits on IORR. A visit is defined by half an hour breaks. Visitors having more than 10 visits i.e. coming in on IORR more than 10 days are extreme superusers, they are 100% hooked on IORR. They do nothing else, not much. Then we have those who are very very hooked on IORR, with 4 or more visits during the day. Yesterday there were more than 700 powerusers, i.e. people who went into IORR four times or more during the day, typically one time in the morning, two times during the day, and one time in the evening.

The most busy single person on IORR yesterday had 783 clicks i.e. was browsing around on IORR clicking on 783 links (pages), spending several hours on IORR. Still this was less than 1% of the total number of clicks - page views - yesterday.

There were 208 people staying on IORR for more than one hour non-stop clicking and browsing yesterday. In normal business life for a web site that is the most valuable visitors for a web site i.e. those who are your best customers. The average visit duration on a "standard" web site is 6 minutes, give or take 1-2 minutes.

I did not add all parts of the IORR web to the above analysis, but when I did another analysis adding another part of the IORR web I got these numbers:

As you see the last week of March is increasing a lot, simply because those pages that I did not add to the above measures are now also included. There are tens of thousands of pages on IORR with more than ten years history so it is easy not to take all parts of the web into account when doing a quick reasearch into the actual visitor numbers...

Interesting, BV. Thanks!
Not long ago, I was wondering what the percentage of regular posters is, compared to total usage of the board.
I suppose that would depend on how you define "regular poster."
Just from looking at the number of views compared to number of posts, I would guess that figure to be about 5%.

My profession is to help people making better web sites. To do that you ned to understand what people do on the web. Advanced web analytics is a core factor here, in fact a must. You must be able to dig into whatever you need to know at any given time, to drive visitors, move them where you want, give them value and keep them on your site. This is important to banks, airliners, travel agenices, tourist sites, companies, anyone on the web actually. IORR is non-profit and I don't have much time to do this kind of real work on my own site, but it is always fun to dig into the numbers. Also it is fun to see there are actually a million people out there who are using this site.

I could write a book about this, in fact I will, probably, one day, I mean advanced web analytics, but to make a short version, this is digging slightly deeper into who's who on IORR...

Most people, like on most web sites, come and go within 5 minutes. On any web. That's natural, because most people are looking for information. You search for "Rolling Stones" or "mick jagger solo" or whatever, you see the IORR link on the top 5 links on Google or Yahoo, and you go to IORR. Most people spend 2-3 minues on a new site, then they bookmark it and come back later.

I have not spent so much time categorizing various visitors and posters, but there are of course some people who spend a lot of time on IORR and most who just use it as a daily source of updates. What I can say is that most people on IORR never post and never visit the forum pages. They check out the main pages, news, show reports, all those details you can find, then some move on to the forum areas, and some of these do actually post. I did not check the numbers, but only may be one out of 10 or 100 do actually post. It's such a hazzle you know, to register, and also to write. With 130+ countries visiting, only few speak and write English language. Many people ca read English but not write.

Interesting statistics! And especially interesting how people get drawn to the "center", morphing from cautios & curious spectators to fully-fledged power users like many of us who post here.

Great that IORR generates such big interest. And thank God, you keep this site free of adversising, however tempting it might be!!

Just a quick note about web analytics and privacy. Many people think we analytics is creepy and taking away privacy. It's not. I mean if you are a bad guy everything is there, but basically web analytics is there for people to improve their site.

Just an example. We had a customer with a landing page that should drive traffic to a sales site. They used a button as a link to where they made their business. We measured the time from people landing on the first page and until they klicked the button. Then we made two version of these pages and found out that the button was slowing down their customers on an average of 26 seconds. I.e. it took on average half a minute more for people to understand where to go with that button. Needless to say the button was redesigned immediately.

I had a link on IORR some years ago and tried out how many people were reading a certain review. I made the links in three different versions. One link gave 100 clicks and another gave 200 clicks and the third link gave 300 clicks in an hour. Guess what sort of link I decided to use from then...

Web analytics is about making web sites easy to use, so that you feel like home, and so that you want to come back, basically like a great bar or a nice home. No hazzle, just easy and no overhead. That is why IORR is pretty boring, doesn't look like a Coca Cola or Shine A Light site, but at least people can navigate, even if I have to admit I never have time to sort out all the pages on IORR, they are still sort of messy, built up over time. But the ral fans will find what they are looking for...

This is a quick cut&paste of USA numbers. Last week.
I believe AOl is a provider i Virginia so these numbers
don't make so much sense when you look into browsing private.
If a customer had asked for this report I would have made it 9am t0o 5pm
and then I would have seen the actual states where people come on IORR.
There might be a major provider in CA too probably
Evenings I believe lots and lots in USA are on AOL etc right?
I will do the real 9 to 5 report later...

United States 27,485 33.81% 121,899
California 4,349 5.35% 20,434
Virginia 3,494 4.30% 16,302
New York 3,385 4.16% 15,598

Yes. I have numbers on who is driving traffic to IORR i.e. Google and plenty others. This is just a brief list like number 92-94 in the list:

Referring Domain

.....
92. estart.se 10 10 : 0.01% 0.01%
93. goodsearch.com 9 9 : 0.01% 0.01%
94. lespaulforum.com 9 9 : 0.01% 0.01%
.....

If you have a Stones site and you want more traffic then you should link to IORR because that is how search works.

I'm quite new to posting and message boards in general - I'm a bit shy about it sometimes, but its great finding a whole (worldwide) community of fellow Stones fanatics, so I'm slowing trying to ease myself from reader/lurker to poster!

Maybe I've break out of my reserved character and try and introduce myself to other IORR people tomorrow at Leicester Square.

These are more into web designing than analyzing. These guys have ideas and are creative. I work in the trade of telling these designer if their designs actuallly are great or useless to the interactive people due to real measures of what people actually do on that particular web site. Most people who do work with stuff like I do are far too busy to blog but if the Stones stay off the road for one more year then may be I will be able to start blogging, after 12 years in this business. Otherwise I will just keep working B2B i.e. directly to customers. That is what I do between shows i.e. from hotel rooms and on airports etc and when I am not on IORR.org. It's interesting work because all web sites are different. And it is great to tell a large corporate to do something and when they do it they see their business is booming by 20-30% simply because they acted according to your advices.
