Best guesses?
the biggest threat to the band's short term future as far as a live act goes is probably now the global economy, more so than the band members' increasing frailty.
If any acts are going to be affected by the current climate, it'll be those who are charging credit card-busting prices for tickets. More and more people are simply going to be increasingly reluctant to stick $1000 for a couple of tickets on a credit card. If the Stones can't realise that, then they've really lost the plot.
Unless they drastically change the
modus operandi that has been the norm over the last decade or so, they may just think it's not worth their while. Will their egoes allow them to downscale and drop their guarantees? However, a new record contract is the best sign for a chance of future concert activity.
the economy being what it is, and with questions arising over how the health of some band members will affect their ability to perform for much longer suggests to me that any future touring will be in shorter bursts and confined almost exclusively to major markets. The sheer length of the last tour plus the number of 'out of the way' places they went to struck me at the time as a farewell to many of those places.
they'll wait until they have a new record to 'promote' (no sniggering, please!) AND until the world economic situation shows SOME kind of recovery. I therefore dont expect a new album or a new tour by the Stones until at least mid-2010.
