I'm not english or american, but, if I understand, Mathijs, you dont appreciate that video. I do love it and, thank's for sharing it. If you don't like I think it' sad (for you) 'cause, I think you never understood what feeling is and what rock'n'roll adventure is. With all respect.

I think you're right, I will never understand what feeling is. I know how to tune a guitar though.

Horrible.. but the joke's on him.. still selling out shows around the world with this act. I saw it twice now, in 013 (Tilburg, NL) and in the HMH (Amsterdam, NL). His talks between songs, his jokes and inviting girls on stage at the end of the show, that's all good fun. But the guitar playing is so bad.. And nobody tells him. Newspapers still give him great reviews, and for some reason the crowd keeps applauding.

His son, playing guitar in this video is on this board too. I'm interested to hear what you think.

It's a fact, many of us play guitar here. Though, not in the same style. I don't like all our so good genius. I love keith and Ronnie. No clichés, Technicians (sleep zzzz .. ) ... just life, true life (chuck Berry, E. Murphy etc...

The attitude here reminds me of the story of Son House hanging around Chicago blues scene, and the younger guns were making fun of this old drunken man. Muddy Waters saw this and got extremily angry, and shouted the guys something to the effect "Don't you ever make fun of this man. Do you know who this man is? When I was young this man was a KING!!!" I can easily imagine Keith Richards coming around with his 0.44 and saying few things to Mathijs about decency and respectfulness...

By the way, guitar in tune or not, Chuck is still a great performer. His voice still has that special spark.

But in the case of CBII happens to see this thread, I'd like to ask what is the point with Chuck's guitar. It is so terribly out of tune (and not for the very first time I hear) that there needs to be some story behind that (I mean, it is not the most difficult tasks in the world to tune a guitar - quite many here is already announced having the skill...) It needs to be intentional. Something to do with Chuck's badass attitude, I guess.

In the end, the guy still loves the stage and can't retire. As his son says, he can't ever imagine his father saying, "That's it, I'm done!"

If there are people that are still buying tickets and still going to shows both in Europe and in the US...then let him continue. Ya really can't knock Chucko too much...he's our father of rock and roll!

Just to make sure:

1) Chuck Berry is among my three absolute heroes. He's written two dozen songs that to this day rank among the best ever written. Viva Viva Rock and Roll remains the best ever R&R song written.
2) Chuck Berry hasn't played a decent, in-tune guitar since '64. With all respect to the man: it's goddamn awfull. His bands are hideous, his playing is hideous. And even when he has a good band (Hail Hail Rock and Roll), he still plays hideously out of tune.

I love the man, but I try to avoid anything after '64.

Guitar guitar guitar.. What about groove, swing, roll....
I think they achieved alot thru the chewed razor blades back in 86-87....

Re: Old Berries

I don't get it. That's Chuck Berry. His guitar was out of tune, and the video is out of sync. But that playing was alright. The man is doing his thing at 75. Playing in tune is over rated. Take this over any metal shredder any day. He could lose that hat...
But Stoners here chuckling politely and smug over Chuck Berry... it's a bad day.

What a strange version of this wonderful tune. It doesn't even try to evoke the sounds related to Louisiana, as the original does. And it isn't rock n roll either. Chuck is not playing rhythm guitar, just soloing and strumming a few weird streaks far and far between. He even is unmelodically shouting the lyrics over the bass at times. Blues this isn't either, but what is it? Jazz? I don't know.
The piano player did a good job, though.
It seems that Mr Berry now transforms his songs in a way similar to Mr Dylan, but opposed to Mr Dylan, who has a more or less constant lineup in his touring band, Mr Berry's bands change frequently, which can't be good for these kind of song transformations because the players only know the studio version and probably don't know what Chuck wants to acheive with the transformation.

Er, the guitar is out of tune, he plays out of key, out of synch, off-beat, out of what ever. He is not even trying to grab a real chord, not even trying to get one key right.

It's just awfully appaling, can't we just one time agree on something so obvious?

Wow, what a description (notice especially the expression "not even trying"). Chuck seemingly goes avantgarde! Maybe he is just so sick and tired of playing those obvious licks and chords that he seems to deconstruct the whole structure of them. Like Dylan does with his voice. Perhaps the attitude and the result is a bit too much for conservative guitar school boy ears...

This reminds me of a story about Lightnin Hopkins involving Billy Gibbons(of ZZTOP)-then a young kid in a Houston band,The Moving Sidewalks. Supposedly,Gibbons heard Hopkins play at a coffeehouse and muttered "He doesnt even know when to change chords." Hopkins was standing behind Billy, according to the story, and leaned forward and surprised the teenager with "Lightnin' change when Lighnin' want to."
I've been guilty of being critical of Chuck. Then I realized how much I was willing to forgive of MY heroes. So I think if one thinks Chuck has nothing left to offer-DON'T GO but let those who want to enjoy him continue through their support at his shows.

You've picked the worse song from a nearly 1 hour broadcast. 'Let It Rock' at that concert is awesome!

And he was 81 then, not 75.

Yeah, that's Chuck Berry, So What? He never put on a great show. That's not what he's known for. He's famous for his original guitar style and song-writing.

This particular performance is a little wince-inducing, I agree. The song is played in a slower tempo than the original, his guitar is slightly out of tune and he hits a few bum notes and chords. But so what. I've heard Keith and Ron play just as poorly or much worse many times over the last few tours and they charge a lot more money to see 'em.

I thinks it's important to note that Chuck's vocals are still excellant which is more than one can say for keith. Chuck's always been the type of act you generally only go to see once to satisfy your curiosity and that's it.

I love Chuck, but I agree with Mathijs 100%. I went to see Chuck at Blueberry Hill in ST Louis Oct. 07, and the whole show was like that video clip. I'm still glad I went, but I expected more.

That's not a good sign, chrism13 ;-)

I read the whole thread first before listening to it and i expected a lot worse :-)
It uninspiring to say the least and he sounds out of tune but i'm afraid to see that I heard worse from the man...
It sounds a bit like those youtube clips where they have a clip of clapton or keith during a concert and then ad the sound which is just awful playing with some clapping from the audience. Hilarious videos IMHO.

Cheers,
Wuudy
