A question for guitar specialists
Posted by: somesmerized ()

Hi everyone,

Would anybody know what kind of guitar Keith plays on Paint it black in "Rolling Stones at the Max"?

I tried to paste a picture here, but I don't know how to do that...

Could it be an early version of Godin Acousticaster 6 ?

It is indeed. I think it sounds great. I'd like to approach that, and I want to get myself a Godin Acousticaster, which I think is very similar to that one in every aspect. Unfortunately I'm left handed, and they are kind of rare. Looks like I'm gonna have to go custom. Unless you know any guitar that look / sound like that one ? Is there any ?

I think "Guts" is the acoustic (actually a classical guitar) played on the lead of "Almost Hear You Sigh" and "Electric Guts" is the guitar in the question (PIB live) by somesmerized.

from a 1989 interview in Guitar Player:

KR: The other thing that I did this year, I decided I was ready to buy a good classical guitar, a gut-string. I got this Velasquez, a beautiful instrument made in 1956. It's just growing up; it's just 33 [laughs]. I started to use that on Steel Wheels.

GP: Do you play that classical for the solo on Almost Hear You Sigh?

KR: Yeah, we called him Guts, I also have an electric one onstage. This guy Roger Sadowsky makes a gut-string electric, and it's the most beautiful sound, so we call him Electric Guts; it looks like a Telecaster, sounds like a classical. Beautiful wood, too.

here's a link to the whole interview:

and SoMesmerized, i hope someone who really knows their stuff comes along to help you with your guitar search ...

The guitars Keith mentiones are nothing alike: a Velasquez is a hand build Spanish guitar (gut stringed, spanish guitar) like the Segovia's of this world play. Valesquez guitars are considered the Stadivarius of spanish guitars. Sadowsky is a New York guitar maker, who mainly builds for the stars. He builds mostly copies of vintage instruments, but also has an innovative line of guitars, like the Electric Guts guitar of Keith. It is much the same guitar as Gibson's Chet Atkins guitar -a gut stringed guitar with a piezo pickup build in. These guitars were very popular in the 80's, but you hardly see them anymore on stages.

Talking about guitars and Paint It Black. On this tour they have a great fuzzy running guitar sound running through PIB. Makes the song really strong. I never figured out where it was coming from. Ronnie is doing the sitar sound that is for sure. Blondie is just doing an acoustic. Keith is playing one of his most commonly used guitars not the one which makes this fuzzy sound on Satisfaction but it might still be him. May be direct, or may be through something. I can see his fingers playing it but it does not match as i would expect. Or may be it is Tim Ries? On the synthesizer? He is next to Chuck on Paint It Black.

Thanks Mathijs. The updated Sadowsky model of Keith's can be found here :

Just click on "Electric Nylon Strings"

These are really beautiful aren't they ?

Hi Bjornulf, I didn't get a chance to see them play Paint it Black on this tour, crossing my finger for Montreal :0)

And thank you for the great site, it opened a brand new horizon for me. Great work indeed !
