Sticky Fingers - The Original Tongue And Lips Logo
Posted by: skipstone ()
Date: February 7, 2010 02:11

Just had to make it its own thread - because it's never had one! That I am aware of anyway.

Courtesy of (and thank you !) Deltics, THIS is where it all started:

Now why hasn't this been reproduced? How come they changed the tongue to the 'common' one we all know (with the double gleam on the tongue)? What's the problem? What about the integrity of the original release? Neither Rolling Stones Records with CBS/Sony for the CD reissues or any other vinyl reissues prior to (or since!) that as well as Virgin and now UME have ever reissued Sticky Fingers the way it was originally issued.

Why the hell not? What a bummer.

I know this is not the tongue in the Virgin reissue - I'm guessing it's not in the UME reissue either.

It's all about branding, corporate identity and other boring business/marketing concepts which is why it changes tour t otour etc....

Original german Jamming With Edward and original Joujouka:

The one and only. No other beats the original classic tongue.

I know the tongue changes tour to tour - since 1989 anyway. But this one only appeared in the first pressings of Sticky Fingers (from what I can tell) and that's it, it was never used on another Stones album except Emotional Rescue (and I think it was just slightly different then).

All reissues have the usual tongue.

So why can't they just...do the Sticky Fingers reissue like the original? It's maddening I tell you!

Interesting thread for collectors. It seems that they used the tongue with the double gleam right from the start too. My UK and german first pressings of Brown Sugar 7` have the double gleam.Sometimes it`s mixed like the Jamming With Edward I posted above: one gleam on the front cover, double gleam on the label. I found a german Sticky Fingers EMI reissue from 1979 with only one gleam on the label. My original spanish Sticky Fingers first pressing has the tongue with one gleam on the innerpaper, two gleams on cover and label. All in all you are right to see the one gleam tongue as original for the paper inner of Sticky Fingers, but not in general. They used the other one on cover/labels right from the start. Other people here with further information?

When I was a 12, 13 y old, I could draw this tongue in an instant - perfectly.

...double gleam included on the ´72 tour plane design as well.
Seems as if the original one gleam got a pretty short life...
(...and seems as if I took this from a thread you posted it,Sway...)

Swaystones, the point of that jacket liner was to show that, from what I can gather at least, from the second pressing of Sticky Fingers on ie all reissues period no matter what format got the double gleam tongue and not the original.

I don't know if that is the Atlantic, CBS or Virgin vinyl reissue. It's too blurry.

So you have the one that Deltics put here? Ha ha, as in THE original release? Do you have the CBS or Virgin or UME CD reissues or any of the other vinyl reissues?

Did I wrote I have the one Deltics put on the board ????

NO ! I didn't .
I just wrote "I don't have the SF reissue ,only the original "
I meant the "original French SF vinyl "

It seems crystal clear for me ....cool smiley

Eh, no you did not "wrote" that - you missed the point. Does your original French Sticky Fingers album have the original tongue or the other one was what I was getting at. Based on your endearing response you don't.

The other major difference between the two tongue logos is the extent and shape of the black bits. Also, the original seems a lighter shade of red - is this true or is it the print faded over time?

The cover for the12 inch version of Undercover Of The Night featured the single gleam, but without the black highlights.

Hey ,Skippie, may be I missed the point .Let's say I missed the point .
Let me some days to post back an answer -I am going to ask an "expert" from this board -and I'll come back to you later .Obviously,we aren't talking about the same stuff.

My response was may be endearing ,but yours was very rude.Don't you get enough vocabulary in "good English" to explain me why I missed the point ?

BTW,in case you missed the point too, some of my misunderstandings that concerns vinyls & other stuff are due to my native language .Not because I don't know what I am talking about .

I hope you'll get it .

SwayStones, my question was in regard to only one thing - the original tongue, which is at the top of this page. You said in your first response, which is above, that you have "only the original" and then you later said

Which means it's not the US or UK original hence my question of the tongue. Since it's not those two original releases in those areas, my point was, which seems to have been misunderstood, does your original French vinyl have the original tongue. Because I don't know if the original tongue was used all over the world at the same time. Based on what you did not say, which I wasn't clear in understanding, was that your copy of Sticky Fingers does have the original tongue.

Correct?

It's interesting that on that Undercover Of The Night 12" the tongue is even slightly different from the original.

I've searched for the Emotional Rescue tongue but have not been able to find it. As I recall it was all white, much like the one on that Brian Jones disc only the gleam etc was...whatever colour the album is. I think.

Just for Skipstone:

ER US - Edition: (german edition has the double gleam)

..and on label:

..and some original stickers for the first customers in Germany:

by the way: here is the label of the first UK-pressing of Brown Sugar. So what`s original? They used different versions right from the beginning.

Hope it helps or confuses a little bit.

Wow. That's cool! Thanks for showing that! It's good to see they've used some diversity with the origin of the logo in its original form. If that makes sense.

I was reaching to remember the Emotional Rescue one. I knew it wasn't the usual but that was it.

Cool beans - thanks!
