The Rolling Stones Poll 2008 by IORR

The Rolling Stones Poll 2008 by IORR has been running during the last week of August 2008. More than 6,000 people on IORR have been voting for their favorite albums, songs, tours and more. These are the results of the poll.

Most popular Rolling Stones albums

1Exile On Main St (1972) 25%
2Sticky Fingers (1971) 17%
3Let It Bleed (1969) 11%

The runner-ups at the next two positions are "Some Girls" and "Beggars Banquet", with 5% each of the votes. The golden years from 1968 to 1978 did for sure produce some great and very popular Rolling Stones albums, voted as favorites by the majority of Stones fans across the world.

The most popular Rolling Stones songs

1Gimme Shelter 12%
2Jumping Jack Flash 7%
3Brown Sugar 4%

Three more songs are on the next three positions, "Midnight Rambler", "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Tumbling Dice", all with approx 4% of the total votes each. Then there is a big gap down to "Wild Horses with 2% of all votes.

Most popular Rolling Stones tours

1A Bigger Bang 2005-2007 18%
2Licks 2002-2003 15%
3Voodoo Lounge 1994-1995 11%

The "Bridges To Babylon" tour was close up in the 4th position with 10% of all votes, which means the Rolling Stones fans value the four most recent tours highest of them all, and the most recent "A Bigger Bang" was a clear winner. This is a clear signal to the Rolling Stones from the fans: Don't quit touring, we do love what you do!

Most popular Rolling Stone

Keith Richards got 50% of all votes, while Mick Jagger got 28%. This might be a surprise to people who do know that Mick is getting a lot of press, and also among average people. Still, IORR is not a place for average people. Keith IS the Stones, that is what the fans are saying. Charlie Watts got 9% and Ronnie Wood was close by. The other members of the Stones in the past Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor, Brian Jones and Ian Stewart got just some marginal votes.

When did you become a Stones fan?

As part of the Stones poll people were asked "When did you become a Stones fan?" Most of them got into the Stones during the 70's, then quite a few during the 60's and 80's. The detailed numbers are 30% in the 70's, 25% in the 60's, 25% in the 80's, 15% in the 90's and the remaining 5% got into the Rolling Stones in this century i.e. from 2000 and on.

The age of the Rolling Stones fans on IORR

The statistical median age of an Rolling Stones fan on IORR is 43 years. This is based on the following distribution among voting IORR visitors:

Age Percent
0-19 2%
20-29 12%
30-39 22%
40-49 36%
50-59 26%
60+ 2%

Where are the Rolling Stones fans in the world?

People from a total of 73 countries voted. IORR is on the top pages on Google and many other search systems, so it is fair to say that if you do have a computer and you are seriously into the Stones, you should be able to find IORR on the net. Then during the last week of August some people may have been on holiday across the world, especially in South Europe. Every year between one and two million people do visit IORR, so clearly only a few of these are represented by the 6,000+ people voting here. Still the following numbers are telling roughly where the Rolling Stones fans do live. Please note that language is a barrier here - it is clear that Japan have many Stones fans, while many do not read English that easily, so IORR might not be that easy to follow on a day to day basis, and that is why Japan is not so high up on the list. The same goes for Argentina and other countries, high up on IORR in general, but not in this poll. A lot of statistically significant variables have to be taken into account, but these are the results:

1USA 32%
1Germany 11%
1Netherlands 7%
1Great Britain 7%
1Sweden 5%
1France 5%
1Canada 4%
1Norway 3%
1Italy 3%
1Spain 2%
